Casey Martin has been in this position before. He just hopes it doesn't end up the way it did last time.

If he keeps catching them like he caught them today (or day 1 for that matter), he won't have to worry about slipping down the standings. The rookie from Alabama caught a tournament-best 27-00 today and leads with 49-15 at the halfway point of the FLW Tour season finale at Lake Chickamauga. At the same time, his effort today locked up a berth in the Forrest Wood Cup as he rallied from 54th in points to get inside the cut.

His goal tomorrow is avoid a repeat of the season opener at Lake Okeechobee where he led after day 1, but eventually faded to 6th.

"I'm catching Okeechobee-sized bass," he said. "Now I have to try to avoid an Okeechobee-sized bomb."

In setting nearly a 100-pound pace, Martin has built a 7 1/2-pound cushion over Larry Nixon, who caught 22-08 to push his total to 42-06. Dayton, Tenn., native Michael Neal is the only other pro within 10 pounds of the lead. Neal, a Chickamauga lifer, caught 22-14 and is 3rd with 40-04.

As far as the drama surrounding the Angler of the Year (AOY) race, there really wasn't any, thanks to Andy Morgan, who secured his first AOY crown and ended David Dudley's 2-year reign after making the weekend cut in 14th place. It's Morgan's fifth Top-20 cut of the season and third in a row. No other angler in the Top 5 in AOY points entering the event made the Top-20 cut.

Here's a look at the Top 10 after day 2 (the red numbers in parentheses indicate each angler's deficit margin from Martin):

1. Casey Martin: 49-15
2. Larry Nixon: 42-06 (7-09)
3. Michael Neal: 40-04 (9-11)
4. Luke Clausen: 39-11 (10-04)
5. Clark Wendlandt: 39-09 (10-06)
6. Wesley Strader: 38-13 (11-02)
7. Shinichi Fukae: 36-13 (13-02)
8. Dan Morehead: 36-06 (13-09)
9. Todd Auten: 35-11 (14-04)
10. John Voyles: 35-04 (14-11)

Takeoff this morning was delayed nearly 2 hours by a thick blanket of fog. Once the field was turned loose, it led to some significant swings on the leaderboard as it forced many pros to change their strategies since the early-morning bite window had essentially closed. Limit catches were down significantly (94 to 73) and there were 19 zeroes today, up from four on day 1.

Of the 10 pros who weighed 20 pounds or more on day 1, six qualified for day 3. The other four struggled mightily, including day-1 leader Randy Haynes, who saw his shallow grass bite fade away. He weighed four fish for 9-10 and finished 21st.

Mark Rose also fell one short of a limit for 7-13 and slipped from 4th to 36th. Bill Day, who caught an 8-pounder as part of his 22-pound day-1 bag, managed just one keeper today and dropped to 66th. Steve Kennedy, another member of the 20-pound club on day 1, missed the early-morning bite because of the delay and didn't catch a keeper until the end of the day. He was then late to check-in and opted to release the fish at the dock. He wound up 80th.

The field for the Forrest Wood Cup came more into focus today as well. Three anglers – Scott Martin, Casey Martin and Jim Moynagh – fished their way in, supplanting Brandon Coulter, Jason Meninger and James Biggs.

The Top 20 will fish tomorrow and the Top 10 after Saturday's round will advance to fish Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Open Mind for Martin

> Day 2: 5, 27-00 (10, 49-15)

Martin's expectations aren't centered around winning, at least for now. But if he continues at the pace he's on, it's going to be hard not to.

"I'm just a rookie and I don't expect to win," he said. "If I win, it's a bonus. You have to catch them all 4 days in a row to win. Right now, I'm just going out and having fun."

His most fun today was bagging a good limit off a spot that he again shared with Rose, J.T. Kenney and Anthony Gagliardi. From there, he bounced around and culled throughout the day to get his weight. He should have that area to himself tomorrow as the others missed the cut.

"It was strange because there were four of us on this group of fish and I think I was the only one that caught 'em (today)," he said, adding that two of his weigh fish came off the community hole.

He's been having success with an umbrella rig and also a football-head jig and he's committed to fishing deep.

"I can get a limit on an umbrella rig, but there are certain timeframes where they won't eat it," he said. "It's a strange deal. Some other guys saw me throwing it and they picked it up, but the window was over by the time they started with it. I'm not sure what the deal was."

Once he figured out the right cast, Larry Nixon caught them in a hurry.

His bag was anchored by a 7-11 brute.

"You have to keep an open mind and be right on your timing," he said. "If you're not there at the right time you won't get bit. It's almost like a tidal fishery like the Potomac that way."

Tomorrow, he'll follow the same script, but he wants to make it to Sunday before he leans on all of his areas hard.

"I want to get a limit early and stay in contention," he said. "I might try to lay off some stuff because I don't want to burn up some things just yet."

2nd: Nixon Found Right Cast

> Day 2: 5, 22-08 (10, 42-06)

Nixon admits the fog delay messed with his mind a bit this morning, but he was able to adjust quick enough to catch his biggest stringer of the season.

"My first area is more of a night-fishing place where they bite real early," he said. "Sure enough, I went in there and got just two bites. I'd had four in there yesterday.

"I left there and got on another area where I caught a couple quick, but it took me about 90 minutes to figure out the right line. I caught three good ones there and left."

He's working for bottom fish, dragging a big jig around. Today, he caught 10 keepers.

"It has to do with finding the right spot and the right cast," he said. "That's the problem here. The current's moving so hard, it keeps pushing your bait downstream. You have to figure out just the right drift."

His best spot today hadn't been fished by anyone else to his knowledge and he hopes it stays that way.

"I've seen folks on both sides, but not right on it," he said. "This is my favorite kind of fishing. The Tennessee River is my favorite chain of lakes in the world."

3rd: Neal Not Holding Back

> Day 2: 5, 22-14 (10, 40-04)

Neal fished some intermediate depths on day 1, but the delay this morning prompted him to head straight for his deeper-water areas.

"It made me forget about anything shallow and head straight out," he said. "I don't know if it's improving. It's about the same as it has been. The areas I hit today were pretty much untouched."

Despite his vast knowledge of the lake, he said he's not saving anything for later in the event.

"I've been hitting it all," he said. "Anywhere I planned on fishing, you can't really catch all of the fish that are there."

His day was helped by a flurry during which he boated four fish that wound up on stage. He figured he caught 15 keepers total today and culled a 15-pound limit.

"I know there are fish there," he said. "Whether or not they stayed, that's a different story."

4th: Clausen Thrilled

> Day 2: 5, 20-09 (10, 39-11)

Luke Clausen thought he was on his way to a bagel today when a 10-minute flurry turned his fortunes around in a hurry.

"I had zero fish at 1 p.m. today," he said. "I pulled up on one place and caught six in like 8 minutes. After that, I left and didn't catch anything after that.

"When I sat down to retie later, my co-angler asked me why my hands were shaking. I said, 'I'm so excited. I thought I was going to zero.' It was a pretty cool deal. I made one cast and caught one, then tried to make the same cast over and over again. I don't think there's a big school there, but I think my timing was impeccable."

He didn't catch any giants, but he'll take it as he secured his second straight Top-20 cut and moved into the Top 10 in AOY points.

Clark Wendlandt had one of six 20-pound bags today.

"Tomorrow it could easily not happen," he said. "The fog delay today took my shallow fish out of play. I'd caught four of my five fish shallow on day 1 and the place I caught them today, nobody else was on it to my knowledge."

5th: Wendlandt Made a Good Call

> Day 2: 5, 22-14 (10, 39-09)

Clark Wendlandt didn't catch the numbers he did on day 1, but he saw an upgrade in quality today and it resulted in his first Top-20 cut of the season.

"I made a couple of moves that helped me out," he said. "It turned out to just be good decision making. I changed up my rotation and went to a place I'd been saving and caught three there. I don't know how many are there. Some of this (ledge) stuff is still new to me. I don’t know if it'll keep replenishing."

He's not looking at the 10-pound gap between Martin and him as an obstacle, but an opportunity.

"One thing I learned today is you look at Mark Rose and Randy Haynes, they're two of the best at it," he said. "Anybody can struggle. I'm absolutely thrilled to be where I'm at. I had a great day and feel like I didn't beat up the places I really like.

"Deep's the main deal for me, but I did practice plenty shallow and feel like I understand that deal. I'm just going to fish the conditions."

6th: Strader Switched Up

> Day 2: 5, 20-06 (10, 38-13)

Wesley Strader was more concerned about his Cup chances today than anything and he took care of that by catching one of six 20-pound stringers. The fog delay altered where he started his day.

"Instead of starting on my second-best spot, I started on my primary area and I caught seven and left," he said. "The current slowed down a bit today and the fish repositioned and I had to adjust.

"They don't like being out on the end of the stuff I was fishing with the real hard current. Right about when the current slacked off, I was getting ready to leave, but I spotted a yellowtail skip across the surface and I knew where they were, so I picked up a swimbait and drilled them."

He said he hasn't seen another tournament boat in 2 days and noted that he's fishing up the river rather than south of Dayton.

"It's (fishing) about the way it should be," he said. "A lot of guys are catching them. I didn't think we'd see a 27-pound bag. I figured the day-1 weights were right and maybe 25 would be the biggest. There are better stringers caught at night here."

Hi strategy for tomorrow will depend on how much the water's moving.

"I definitely need some current," he said. "If I catch what I caught today, I'll probably go down lake and look for a big one."

21st: Haynes Avoided Crowds

> Day 2: 4, 9-10 (4, 33-02)

Haynes made a departure from the norm for him this week and he opted not to fish offshore and do battle over territory. Instead, he found some beefy fish holed up in shallow grass during practice and that's how he'd planned to fish all tournament.

It worked out beautifully on day 1, but things took a 180-degree turn on him today.

"They just didn't bite," he said, adding he was ripping a Strike King jig through the grass to trigger bites. "It was just so crowded out there and I had this deal going. Everybody had their places and I just didn't feel right being out there. It's just how I am. I don't want to make anybody mad.

"(In practice), everybody saw me and I saw them. The boat traffic on Sunday was so bad that we couldn't even idle over anything without someone seeing you. I'd spent some time on those spots and learned how to fish them, but with so many boats around it just felt like somebody was watching over your shoulder all the time. I just wasn't comfortable."

The shallow bite fired up for him Monday and Tuesday and they bit again to the tune of 23-08 on day 1.

"I was around the right fish," he said. "It's the first time I've fished like that. I learned something and that's pretty awesome to me. No matter how bad I finished, I learned something that makes me happy on the Tennessee River.

"Still, it hurts to be leading and then fall on your face, but we all have days like that."

Wesley Strader has been fishing mostly up river so far.

36th: Rose Didn't Adjust

> Day 2: 4, 7-13 (9, 30-09)

Rose was disappointed in himself for not making the right adjustments soon enough today when it became obvious the hole he'd fished on day 1 wasn't producing.

"The lake's full of fish. I just didn't catch them," he said. "I wasn't able to fish it like I fished yesterday. I didn't make good adjustments and that's nobody's fault but mine."

He said more boats found their way to the spot he shared with Casey Martin and J.T. Kenney on day 1.

"Of course, I'm disappointed because I'm a competitor," he said. "You only get so many at-bats to hit a home run and I felt like the opportunity was there for me. It just didn't work out."

80th: Kennedy Struck Out Shallow

> Day 2: 0, 00-00 (5, 22-10)

Kennedy was bitten by the fog delay as his key bites yesterday came real early in the morning.

Today, with no breeze to speak of, he couldn't entice any takers for his swimbait that he was pulling around in shallow water.

"There weren't a lot of keepers around, but there were some really big fish there," he said. "It was crystal-clear water and I could see them follow the swimbait around. I just couldn’t get one to eat it. I wasted 3 or 4 hours there and ran to the dam to my deep spot and as I expected, there was a boat on it (a local)."

He hustled back up the river and caught a bunch of non-keepers before finally swinging a keeper into the boat 1 minute before he was due to check-in. He wound up late for check-in and released his lone fish rather than have the weight wiped out by the penalty.

"It was a shorter day and there are a lot of decisions to make here," he said. "I sensed I might be in trouble because I knew I was fishing for some iffy fish, but they were the right ones. I caught 22 on day 1 and that's after missing two big ones early."
