Catching a little more than 14 pounds through 2 days of most Bassmaster Elite Series events typically gets an angler an early trip home or a head start on the drive to the next tournament.

This week, however, it was enough to qualify for the weekend and clinch a check for at least $10,000, as West Point Lake, the Chattahoochee River impoundment along the Alabama-Georgia border, continues to test the will (and skill) of some of the world's top anglers.

Aaron Martens, who was 4th after day 1, took over the lead with an 11-09 stringer today that pushed his total to 24-14. He's in a virtual dead heat with Greg Vinson, who's an ounce behind after bagging 9-03 today to retain 2nd place.

This could be Tommy Biffle's tournament to lose if he'd caught limits both days. Still, the Oklahoman jumped four spots to 3rd with 23-03 after another four-fish day netted him 10-09. Day-1 leader Keith Combs slipped to 4th with 23-02 as he came in more than 8 1/2 pounds shy of his Thursday catch. Skeet Reese caught 9-10 to remain in 5th with 22-10.

The Top 12 is separated by 3 1/2 pounds or the equivalent to what some would call a mammoth bite at West Point this week. About 10 1/2 pounds separates Kelly Jordon in 50th place from Martens. Only five anglers – Martens, Biffle, Dean Rojas (8th), Brandon Palaniuk (13th) and Andy Montgomery (17th) – have caught 10 or more pounds each day.

Here's a look at the Top 12 at the halfway point, with the deficit margin from leader indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Aaron Martens: 24-14
2. Greg Vinson: 24-13 (0-01)
3. Tommy Biffle: 23-03 (1-11)
4. Keith Combs: 23-02 (1-12)
5. Skeet Reese: 22-10 (2-04)
6. Casey Ashley: 22-07 (2-07)
7. Edwin Evers: 22-02 (2-12)
8. Dean Rojas: 21-14 (3-00)
9. Rick Clunn: 21-11 (3-03)
10. Pete Ponds: 21-11 (3-03)
11. Chris Zaldain: 21-08 (3-06)
12. Cliff Pace: 21-06 (3-08)

Edwin Evers, who was leading the Toyota Tundra B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year points race entering the event, helped his case considerably by catching the day's heaviest bag – a 14-06 stringer that gave him 22-02 and carried him into 7th from a tie for 40th. Rick Clunn, the only other angler to crack 14 pounds today, moved up to 9th from 43rd with 21-11.

Many anglers remarked that it's been hard to get bit twice in the same area or off the same spot so far and that constantly moving around, either to new water or back through previously-fished locales, has been crucial to their success. Watching the boats move from place to place or pocket to pocket could be compared to how the players on the old electric football games moved around unpredictably once the game was plugged in.

Heavy rains and a possible thunderstorm are in the forecast for Saturday as more than an inch of precipitation is expected to fall around La Grange, Ga., through the weekend. Temperatures are expected to top out around 60 with a southeast wind around 10 mph.

The Top 50 will fish tomorrow before the field is cut to the Top 12 on Sunday, when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Martens On Edge

> Day 2: 5, 11-09 (10, 24-14)

Martens, who won last year's All-Star event in Illinois, hasn't posted a victory in a full-field Elite Series event since 2009 at Lake Guntersville.

He's not sure whether he'll walk away with the trophy this week yet. Heck, he wasn't even sure what he was going to catch today.

"I went fishing (today) and actually caught them way better than I thought I was going to," he said. "It's freaky, though. I'm not sure I can keep doing it. I'm just never comfortable here. Even if I had the best spots on the lake, I wouldn't feel comfortable. Hopefully, I can keep making good decisions because one wrong decision at the wrong time and you're done. You almost have to be perfect."

He said he's caught fish using a variety of techniques, from sight-fishing to targeting post-spawners to working the shad spawn with a topwater plug.

"I'm just trying to find fish in as many places as I can," he said. "I feel good about my chances. I at least have a fighting chance. It's going to be tricky, though. The weather's going to change. It's been cloudy with an east wind and the fish have gotten used to that. If they get a day where that all changes, it could mess it up. I've been wanting it to clear up, but the fish are adjusted to how it is now."

He fished a different area of the lake from yesterday and had a pretty productive morning. He figures he caught 11 pounds within the first 90 minutes.

"I caught a 9 1/2-pound limit over the last half of the day and threw back four nice ones – 1 3/4- to 2-pounders that I wish I wouldn't have caught," he said. "It's hard to fish here without hurting yourself trying to catch a big one.

"If I can do that again, I'll be really nervous going into Sunday."

Martens said he caught fish pretty steadily all through the morning.

2nd: Vinson Hanging in There

> Day 2: 5, 9-03 (10, 24-13)

With the water receding a bit, Vinson's shallow-water pattern took a hit, but he managed to scratch out 11 keepers today, including eight largemouths.

"I just never got a big bite today," he said. "I kept running the pattern thinking I'd get the opportunity, but it just didn't happen. I had to move around a lot."

He's not sure what the lake will have in store tomorrow, but he's planning to stick with what's working.

"You have to treat each day as a new day, but I have one pattern that's gotten me to where I'm at now," he said. "I'll adjust if I have to. I'll just roll with it. With the rain, it's hard to say what'll happen. I feel like I should still be able to catch them."

3rd: No Dinks for Biffle

> Day 2: 4, 10-09 (8, 23-03)

Biffle had the mindset coming into the tournament that he wasn't going to spend time fishing for 8-pound limits of spotted bass. He knew the largemouths would be a bit harder to catch, but he's been able to pull through with enough bites to be near the top of the leaderboard.

"It's just hard to get a bite," he said. "I thought it would be tough because I had a slow, terrible practice. It's turned out good so far. I'm just fishing hard and fishing with baits for big fish. I ain't fishing for little ones."

He never connected with a fifth fish today, but if he did he thinks he'd be the one everybody would be chasing.

"I believe if I'd gotten five bites both days, I'd have a pretty good lead on them," he said. "It's just been so tough. You don’t know if you're around them or not until you catch one."

As far as the rain that's expected tomorrow, he says, bring it on.

"It's been dark and cloudy both days so I don't think rain will much matter," he said. "It might make them bite a little better, who knows?"

4th: Big 'Uns Let Combs Down

> Day 2: 5, 7-04 (10, 23-02)

The main difference for Combs today was he had a limit in his livewell by 10 a.m. However, he wasn't able to collide with the big fish that helped him to the lead on day 1.

"It wasn't a whole lot different," he said. "After I caught my limit, I culled three times, but I just couldn't get any good ones. Yesterday, I got fortunate and I went out today anticipating I could catch a couple 3-pounders. It just didn't happen. I had an opportunity to add 10 ounces to maybe a pound, which could be huge in the end here."

He said he made a few casts at offshore areas, but it's not where he's expecting to catch a difference-maker.

"I'm sticking it out fairly shallow," he added. "I'm not targeting anything past 5 feet. I mixed in a new technique today that I hope pulls me through. It's something I haven't thrown yet. I was able to catch three doing it today."

Greg Vinson narrowed his deficit on the lead to 1 ounce today.

He believes tomorrow's rain will take away many, if not all, of the sight-fishing opportunities that are left, but expects the weights to hold fairly steady.

"I'm not necessarily fishing for bed-fish, but I am seeing a lot of the fish I can catch," he said. "It tells me how the fish is set up. If it's raining, that's out so I'm going to have to do some things differently. I don't think you'll see big changes in the weights no matter what the weather does. If you're on fish to catch 10 or 11 pounds and you catch a 6-pounder, you'll be right at the top."

6th: Big Bite Key for Ashley

> Day 2: 5, 13-08 (10, 22-07)

Casey Ashley jumped 14 spots today, thanks in large part to a 6-06 brute that devoured his topwater bait this morning. The fish accounted for nearly half of his weight today and has him in position to make his second straight Top-12 cut.

"I still haven't gotten anything figured out," he said. "I'm doing everything everybody else is doing. It just happened that I caught a 6 today. I do have a place, though, where I can stop and catch a limit of spots pretty quick in the morning. I did that yesterday and left with a limit for about 6 pounds. Today, they weighed about 9."

Shortly after that, he tangled with the kicker that stood as the big fish for the day.

"I'd like to tell you I knew she was there, but after I caught that early limit, I went by a place that looked right and pulled in and fished it," he said. "I threw my Pop-R in there and she just annihilated it. I've caught some 10- and 11-pounders before, but I wasn't near as shook up as I was when I caught this one. That's a game-changer here. I was jacked up, and it was all before 9 a.m."

A jerkbait and fluke-style soft plastic have been key to catching spots in the morning. He then transitions to a topwater the rest of the day, trying to coax bigger specimens to the surface.

"I'm moving around a good bit and looking for a specific thing, but it's hard to find," he said. "It's not really a pattern. It's just something in my mind I'm looking for. There's no rhyme or reason to it."

15th: Costly Error by Cherry

> Day 2: 5, 8-12 (10, 21-00)

Hank Cherry would be knocking on the door of the Top 5 if not for a brain cramp todaythat caused him to throw back a keeper that he never intended to cull. By throwing it back, he estimates the fish, which still had Cherry's culling tag clipped to its lip, cost him nearly 1 1/2 pounds.

"Today was a bad grind," he said. "The place I fished yesterday got dirty and I just went hunting for some new water and got on to something in the afternoon. I got bit pretty steadily on a jerkbait, but it's more of an open-water deal for me."

Despite his miscue today, he's not counting himself out of it yet as he's less than 4 pounds behind Martens.

"The weights are so tight right now, it's weird to say anyone in the Top 35 could come back and win the thing, but that's the case," he said. "It'll come down to whomever comes across that lucky 4-pound bite."

He's weighed in a mixed bag of spots and largemouths both days and anticipates another day of run-and-gun fishing Saturday.

Tommy Biffle would likely be leading if he'd caught one more fish each day.

"My day will consist of 10 casts and run, 10 casts and run until I get the depth figured out and where they're at," he said. "Then, I'll run that all day."

80th: Starks Baffled

> Day 2: 4, 4-15 (9, 10-10)

By the time Wednesday rolled around this week, Jeremy Starks felt like he could cash a check fishing for spotted bass offshore even though the bite had slacked off considerably since the start of practice.

But the West Virginian learned what many others did this week: West Point can change at a moment's notice.

"Yesterday at noon, I'd had three bites and then it got really good," he said. "I didn't catch any bigger fish, but I only had an hour of decent fishing. Today, it was a complete grind. I'm not sure if it's the extended front we've had here, but it was tough."

His third sub-70th finish of the season comes on the heels of a 20th-place showing at Bull Shoals Lake 2 weeks ago.

"I could find them on my graph today and I'd drop a dropshot down and they'd hit it, but they just wouldn't eat it," he said. "That's what was so frustrating. You're going to have tournaments where you feel like you fished poorly and still do okay, but here I feel like I fished good. I didn't panic and I know I was doing what I needed to do to get bites."

He said he lost two keeper-quality fish today, but nothing of any significant size.

"I had no opportunities at big fish," he said. "Those spots just didn't cooperate how I thought they would."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 100 anglers, 67 limits (two fewer than yesterday), 9 fours, 7 threes, 6 twos, 8 ones, 3 zeroes (three more than yesterday).

> Jared Lintner checked in 6 minutes late and had the 2 1/2 pounds or so he had in his livewell negated because of it. He wound up 95th with 7-04. "It was a bonehead move on my part," he said. "I was locked in on a 4-pounder messing with a frog and just lost track of time."

> Reigning AOY Brent Chapman struggled again today, catching 4-06 to close with 10-02 in 83rd place, his worst finish since he was 93rd at the Harris Chain of Lakes in March 2008. To read his recap of the competition, click here to check out BassFan's Pro View Reports.
