It’s not often an angler using 5-pound test line and 3-inch swimbaits wins a bass tournament these days – much less in Alabama.

But that’s exactly what Hank Cherry used to eek out a 1-ounce triumph over Craig Daniel at the Lewis Smith Lake Bassmater Southern Open last week. After spending the first 2 days of the competition in 2nd place, an 11-15 stringer on day 3 pushed his total to 38-13, which was just enough to clinch his first B.A.S.S. victory and earned him a spot in next year’s Bassmaster Classic.

The win also helped him finish 4th in the Southern Open points, meaning he has the option to fish the Elite Series as well next year.

“It’s starting to sink in now because I’ve had to return about 10,000 phone calls,” he said. “I’m as excited as I can be (for the Classic). All I’ve heard about (Grand Lake) is how it’s going to be cold and supposedly it fishes a lot like lakes around here – Lake Norman and Lake Wylie. Whether I catch a fish or not, I’m just honored and blessed to be there.”

The Maiden, N.C., resident is no stranger to fishing tour-level events, having spent 2007 and 2008 competing on the FLW Tour. He said he’s been wanting to get back to the highest level of competition for some time and now that the opportunity has presented itself, he’s going to try to make it happen.

Here’s how he did it.

Practice

Cherry combed the Internet in the weeks leading up to the tournament, trying to find any nugget of information that he could put to use on the water. He didn’t come across much until he was launching his boat during practice the Saturday before the tournament.

“I didn’t know what to expect when I got there,” he said. “There wasn’t a whole lot you could find on the Internet. When I backed the boat down the first morning, I looked across toward the dam and saw shad skipping on top so I knew the fish were on shad. That clued me in to a couple things.”

He scored with some bigger topwater baits and big swimbaits and buzzbaits the first day, but sensed he was going to have to adapt his presentations. Instead of going slightly smaller, he went real small with his baits and line, employing a tactic that he picked up at Lake Norman, where he’s claimed two BFL wins and a 4th-place in the FLW Tour Major in 2007.

“I tried it the first day and absolutely crushed ‘em,” he said. “The thing that gave me the idea that I had a chance to win that thing was I went into an area where I knew they’d been pressured and I knew they’d been caught because they were biting everything that swam."

He rigged up a 3-inch swimbait on a small darter head and threw it on spinning tackle with 5-pound line.

“They quit biting the big baits, but the first three casts with the little one, I had two strikes and caught a 5-pounder. That’s when I said, ‘I think we can do this.’ Things got extremely tougher as practice went on.”

Once he figured out how he was going to fish, he needed to seek out multiple areas where the fish were schooling and gorging on bait near the surface. He didn’t have to go far.

“Everybody was running way off,” he said. “I ran maybe a mile or mile and a half in either direction from the launch site. Everybody else was running 30 or 40 miles. I never did that. I stayed pretty close because I noticed I had nobody around me. The fish were there. You just had to fish for them a little differently.

“Inside that block, whether I caught a fish there or not in practice, if I saw a school come up and chase bait, I’d run over it and put a waypoint down and throughout the days, I’d just run the marks. I’d run them slow and back and forth. If you spent too much time or not enough time at one of them, it would cost you, but for some reason it seemed like every time I pulled up and put the boat down, within 5 minutes, they’d blow up.”

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 15-09
> Day 2: 5, 11-05
> Day 3: 5, 11-15
> Total = 15, 38-13

Cherry had a brutal boat number on day 1 of the tournament – 148 out of 149. In other words, he didn’t have easy access to his primary spot.

“I went to my first spot and there were 17 boats there,” he said. “I was kind of freaking out a little bit. Craig Daniel was in there, (Kevin) Hawk was in there. I stayed in there a little while and caught a 3-pounder, then backed out.”

He bounced around to some other schools and put together a small limit. With the sun hanging high, he then opted to check out some shallow piers where he’d marked some crusing fish in practice.

“I told my co-angler I hadn’t had a lot of jig bites in practice, but when I get a limit, I was going to go fish these couple piers and see what could happen,” he said. “I fished five of them and went from 11 pounds to 15-09 just like that.”

He found himself in 2nd place after day 1, less than a pound behind Hawk.

He caught all schooling fish on day 2, weighing 11-05 to maintain his hold on 2nd place. Only now, he was chasing Daniel, a local stick who’d caught 13-07 and was 4 ounces ahead of Cherry.

Cherry opted to drop down to 5-pound fluorocarbon when fishing his swimbaits near the surface.

“It was never a struggle catching them,” he said. “It’s just the size was smaller the second day.”

The final day saw him with just a couple keepers late in the morning and he admitted the pressure was getting to him.

“My nerves were getting the best of me because the third day in big tournaments have been my nemesis so I decided to calm down and pick up my flipping stick and get comfortable,” he said.

He went back to the same pier he fished on day 1 and flipped up a limit with a jig.

“I knew then, after I put the rod down, that I was okay,” he said. “I went back out and kept chasing bait and the schooling fish. I kept culling up all day. I never got any big bites, though.”

Winning Pattern Notes

> Cherry didn’t necessarily target suspended fish, but he said he’d position his boat over 60 or 70 feet of water and make 30- to 40-yard casts so the swimbait would land over 30- to 40-foot depths.

“The biggest thing I looked for were rounded points in the back third of a creek,” he said. “If I found that rounded point that had deep water near it, it was pretty much a given that I could catch them there ... I wouldn’t let it sink, though. As soon as it hit the water, I’d start reeling back as fast as I could and they’d come up and get it.

“They were basically just out roaming. You’d cast, cast, cast and all of sudden, boom, you’d get one. It seemed like when you’d catch one, you’d ignite the school. If you kept casting in the same direction, either they’d start schooling or you’d catch them out of whatever was there. When they came to get it, there’d be like 10 of them and you just didn’t know if the 14-incher was going to get it or the 4-pounder.”

> His light line approach forced him to be patient and careful when playing the fish back to the boat.

“Some of them were painstaking and took a long time,” he added. “Those 2 1/2-pound spots, especially on the light line, don’t exactly come to the boat real easy with those rough teeth.”

On several occasions, he noted the line broke as soon as the fish were in the net.

“It was just one of those times where things worked out right,” he said.

Winning Gear Notes

> Swimbait gear: 6’9” medium-action Cashion spinning rod, Shimano Stradic FJ and Shimano Saros 3000 spinning reels (both 6.0:1 ratio), 5-pound Sunline Super FC Sniper fluorocarbon line, unnamed 1/16- and 1/8-ounce darter jigheads, various 3” boot-tail swim baits (pearl and green-black core).

> He did some trimming on the swimbaits so as to not negate their action during the ultra-fast retrieves. “I didn’t take any length away,” he said. “I just took the arched section down and made it more streamlined. As fast as I was reeling with the jighead and even when I threw it weightless, as far as I was throwing it, if it rolled over, you just didn’t get the same effect. You wanted it to just shoot straight through. Every fish I caught out there, I saw them get it.”

> Flipping gear: 7’2” heavy-action Cashion flipping rod, Shimano Curado casting reel (7.1:1 ratio), 20-pound Seaguar InvisX fluorocarbon line, 9/16-ounce E.R. Lures jig (Jason’s magic craw), Zoom Big Salty Chunk trailer (green-pumpkin).

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “I’ve been friends with Bryan Thrift for years and I was always kind of the hot head and he always told me that no matter what happens, ‘Stay calm.’ I guess staying calm and trusting the good Lord that everything was going to be okay. I was a ball of nerves from the first cast until the last because I just knew how close I was.”

> Performance edge – “Ever since I switched to Nitro and got in that Z-9, the performance and the way it handles and fishes with that big deck up front, it’s made my life a lot easier. The people at Bass Pros Shops have been so nice. It’s been a wonderful relationship so far.”
