Nearly 20 years ago, Pete Gluszek fished a B.A.S.S. Federation tournament at Cayuga Lake, one of the famed Finger Lakes in upstate New York.

It was back before 10-inch HD sonar and GPS screens were the norm. Back then, shoreline landmarks served as the best way for anglers to line up on a sweet spot. He even remembers catching a few fish off an area he had identified thanks to some farm silos on shore.

In a way, last week’s Cayuga Lake Northern Open was like stepping back in time for Gluszek, a resident of Mount Laurel, N.J.

Fishing out of his guide boat – his new Ranger is still on order – and working without his main sonar and GPS units due to an electrical short, he resorted to old-school triangulation methods to mark areas that helped him win the final Northern Open of the year and claim a berth in next year’s Bassmaster Classic.

Oh, and that area with the silos? Yeah, he caught a couple there, too, in practice.

Over 3 days of competition, he caught 56-01 and led wire-to-wire to collect his first B.A.S.S. win since 1999. He led by 6 ounces after day 1, but gave himself some separation on days 2 and 3 to beat Stephen Browning, one of 11 Elite Series pros in the field, by more than 4 1/2 pounds at the end.

“It’s so amazing in more ways than one,” he said. “Every time you get one is amazing.”

It also erased the sour taste he had from the 2008 Lake Champlain Eastern FLW Series, a tournament he led the first 3 days only to have Chip Harrison overtake him for the win on the final day.

“That was ringing through my ears coming to the weigh-in (on day 3) for this one,” he said. “Being able to hold on wire-to-wire – I just fished really well and really clean. It’s so great to get a win, but what’s so great about this one is that huge perk of getting that Classic ticket, so this is going to live on with me and my family until February when we show up at the big dance.”

Here’s how he did it.

Practice

Gluszek is a known shallow-water crankbait expert, but the way Cayuga set up, he knew he’d have to mix deep water and shallow water and key on grass beds which are prevalent throughout the northern end of the lake. Compared to his last time there, the numbers have come down, but the quality is much better.

“There were a million fish in the lake back then – not very many big ones, but just full of fish,” he said. “The complexion has changed. The numbers aren’t as stellar as they were back then, but what is available now is a lot of big fish – a lot of 3 1/2- to 5-pounders that I didn’t see last time I was there.”

What made practice tough was the lack of a full complement of electronics. His console units went out on the first day of practice and he had to make do the rest of the week. Without GPS, he wasn’t able to really zero in on the edges of the weed beds or isolated clumps, which in some areas were several hundred yards off the bank. Still, he was able to notch a couple of strong, 15-plus pound days.

“I knew it was going to be difficult for me to triangulate and position myself consistently in that part of the lake so the first thing I did was moved to parts of the lake where I could easily triangulate and use landmarks to re-position myself,” he said. “That, unknowingly, put me in the area where some of the biggest fish in the lake were. That was the key for staying around the big bites all day.”

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 19-03
> Day 2: 5, 20-14
> Day 3: 5, 16-00
> Total = 15, 56-01

One key element Gluszek discovered as the first day of competition began to develop was that his method of catching fish was more pattern-based than spot-oriented. That discovery allowed him to fish new water each day and produce similar results each time.

His 19-03 catch on day 1 gave him a slim lead over Browning.

“Going out on the first day and stroking that 19-pound bag was fantastic,” he said. “I didn’t have any spots. That worked great for me because I was pattern fishing. I could take what I was doing anywhere in the 15-mile area I was fishing and apply the pattern and put myself in position to catch bigger fish.

“That was an important distinction, in my mind, that once I developed that confidence in the pattern, I could take it anywhere. That was a huge turning point.”

The other turning point and what likely clinched the win for him came on day 2 after he already had a solid 15 pounds in his livewell, which he felt was enough to hold onto the lead or least keep him within striking distance on day 3.

Late in the morning, he moved away from his flipping areas to shallow water as he had been doing, but wasn’t sure how the overcast and rainy conditions would affect the fish holding near docks.

His skipping program came up empty on the first 20 docks and he began debating whether he needed to head back out deep. His next skip resulted in a 5-pounder that culled out a 2. Three docks later, another 5-pounder gave him a 20-14 bag and strengthened his grip on the lead.

“I could not believe the position I was finding myself in,” he said. “I knew then that I was going to have a big lead on a body of water where ounces usually separate first and second. That was a massive turning point.

“If you were quiet at your house at about 1 o’clock, you probably could’ve heard me celebrating out there.”

He carried a 4-plus pound lead into the final day when bluebird skies greeted the 12 finalists and caught a solid 16-pound bag on day 3 to close out the win.

Winning Pattern Notes

While he’s done well with crankbaits in other tournaments he’s won in the past, flipping has always played a major factor in Gluszek’s success. It was no different at Cayuga, where he found his biggest bites flipping a soft-plastic stickbait in the 15-foot zone off the edges of milfoil grass.

“The break lines were occurring at about 12 feet and the grass would taper down and end at about 15. That’s where the bites were occurring in the morning,” he said. “As the sun would break the horizon, it would position those fish tighter to the weed edge in the 10- to 12-foot zone and then I’d be flipping into that thicker part of the grass.”

With so much vegetation to choose from he focused more on the denser, healthy-looking milfoil.

The key to his pattern was flipping grass in those intermediate depths in the morning, then sliding up and targeting docks in the later morning and afternoon when he cleaned up on his biggest fish.

Gluszek weighed all largemouths during the 3-day event.

“I think that’s what separated me from the field because I think a lot of guys did the reverse and went with finesse-oriented stuff when the fish tightened up,” he noted. “I stuck with mainly power fishing and saved my finesse tactics for late in the day.”

He said between 70 and 85 percent of all of his bites came on the fall, but there were others where it would fall to the bottom and the fish would inhale it on the first twitch.

Winning Gear Notes

> Flipping gear: 7’ extra-heavy Denali Rods swimbait rod, Shimano Curado casting reel, 20-pound Gamma Edge fluorocarbon line, pegged 1/2-ounce Round Valley Tungsten weight (black), 4/0 Gamakatsu offset round-bend worm hook, 5” Yamamoto Senko (black).

> He went with the swimbait rod because he was flipping with fluoro. “While it’s an extra-heavy action, it has a softer tip and when I’m dealing with fluorocarbon, I like to have to that cushion. That was huge and so was the fluoro in the clear water.”

> He said the Curado reel he used is at least 15 years old and he has others that just as aged. He’s had them rebuilt and lubed and they continue to perform at a high level.

> Skipping gear: 6’8” medium-action Denali Rods Michael Murphy Signature Series jerkbait spinning rod, Abu Garcia Revo 30 spinning reel, 10-pound Spiderwire UltraCast braid (main line), 16-pound Gamma Edge fluorocarbon (leader), same hook, same bait.

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “Having the pattern and eliminating the thought process of spots and areas – that was the number one key to my success. I was able to move and change depth zones based on the pattern throughout the course of the day. I didn’t care if there were boats in front of me or behind, I could find new water every day. I’ll take being on a pattern over being on a spot any day of the week.”

> Performance edge – “Triangulation, old school. When I started fishing, we didn’t have high-tech GPS systems. While they’re very important, we sometimes we forget how to triangulate and use landmarks to our advantage. That was huge for me. I was using a Ranger boat and Evinrude motor that have been around. I think I have 700 hours on my motor. The boat’s been through 10-footers on Lake Erie a number of times. The durability of those two products amazes me.”
