Joshua Wagy had a bit of a home-field advantage at the James River Bassmaster Northern Open last week.

He’s fished the James since he was a kid, so his knowledge of the tidal system is pretty vast. Plus, he’d been on the water virtually every evening since the middle of May, plotting out his strategy for the tournament.

He had spots staked out from takeoff all the way to the Chickahominy River, but the areas closer to the ramp proved to be most productive for him during competition as his 3-day total of 39-04 gave him a 6-ounce victory over runner-up Robert Whitehurst.

He’s logged several Top-10 finishes in FLW events, but this is first victory at the Triple-A level and it came in an event dominated by locals. Eight of the Top 10 finishers, including Wagy, hailed from Virigina. With the win comes a berth in next year's Bassmaster Classic provided he competes in the final two Northern Opens, which he plans on doing.

"I still really don't think it's set in all the way,” he said. “It still hasn't set in yet. I've heard from a lot of people I fish against locally and people I grew up fishing around. They took a lot of my money when I was growing up. It's a neat feeling when you get into a big tournament like that and you have a lot of friends and family from close to home supporting you every step of the way."

Here’s how he conquered the James.

Practice

With years of experience on the James, Wagy wasn’t really zeroed in on one particular thing in practice. He was most concerned with having enough spots to fish all through the system in the event conditions changed or others found the same stuff.

With waypoints scattered up and down the river, he opted to bypass the long run down to the Chickahominy and maximize fishing time.

“I sat down and thought about it and decided to key in on the fish near Osborne (Landing) because I didn't think I'd have as much company as I would going to the Chickahominy," he said. “There were quite a few boats by Richmond and Osborne, but I was still able to fish a vast majority of stuff I really wanted to fish."

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 12-02
> Day 2: 5, 19-11
> Day 3: 4, 7-07
> Total = 14, 39-04

On the opening morning of competition, he was able to capitalize on the last 90 minutes or so of the outgoing tide, which tends to result in more bites on the James.

"It's a challenge all on its own,” he said of fishing the tides. “A lot of people will get on a tidal river system and it's overwhelming because they don't understand the tide cycles."

He had a good limit by 7:30 on a topwater popper bait and then worked on spots with main-river features, throwing a 7” Berkley PowerBait Power Worm. He brought 12-02 to scales, good enough to put him in 20th place.

"I tried to cover as many of those spots as thoroughly as I could as fast as I could and wanted to just keep rotating through them,” he said. “I fished comfortably all day. I wasn't really disappointed because I felt confident I could catch 12 to 14 pounds per day judging by my practice. I really didn't have any idea I could go back and fish the stuff on day 2 that I fished on day 1.”

Day 2 was one of those rare tournament days where everything seems to fall into place. He caught a 5-pounder on his first cast after pulling into his best topwater area, a 40-yard stretch of bank in 3 to 6 feet of water that the fish seemed to funnel through as the tide pulled out.

“I went another 45 minutes and still had the jitters from catching that one before I had another bite,” he said.

He then added a couple more 2 1/2-pounders before making a move to a spot he didn’t get to fish much on day 1 and finished off his limit there on the worm with two 3-pound class fish and a 4-plus-pounder.

He wound up weighing 19-11, which proved to be the top stringer of the event, and took a lead of more than 2 pounds into the final day.

His best early-morning topwater area didn’t produce on day 3 as it had the first 2 days despite his staying in the area much longer than he had before.

“I stayed in there for 3 hours waiting on them to turn on and they never really turned on,” he said. “I don’t know if they were fished out or if something changed.”

He didn’t have a fish in his livewell by 10 a.m. and he said the gravity of the situation began to set in.

“It was like chewing on my fingers all day,” he said. “I was trying to think of all the little places I hadn’t fished that I thought I could catch a fish off of.”

He managed to get three keeper bites and had one little area saved that he went to and caught his fourth keeper. A fifth bite never materialized and he wound up with 7-07.

“I wasn’t relieved by any means, but the longer the day went on, the more nerve-wracking it got,” he added.

On way in, he had a mechanical issue and was able to catch a ride with fellow competitor Frank Poirier, who had been trailing close behind.

“That was probably the most nerve-wracking part of the whole day,” he said.

It was an emotional victory for Wagy, who grew up fishing the James with Billy Wells, an older man who passed away nearly 2 years ago.

Wagy hammered a 19-11 bag on day 2 to snag big-bag honors for the tournament.

“I grew up around him and grew up fishing with him,” he said. “He was basically like a grandfather to me. When I put my boat in the water that second morning, I got that feeling that people talk about when they think that something’s going to happen that day. I had that feeling and I couldn’t put my finger on it, but the more I fished that day the more I thought about him. I know some people are superstitious, but when you have one of those days, I guess you could say he was listening all day.

“He tried to help me as much as he could along the way. A lot of that stuff is permanently embedded in my brain and isn’t going to go anywhere.”

Winning Gear Notes

> Topwater gear: 6’3” medium-action JB Custom Rods prototype casting rod, Abu Garcia Revo SX
casting reel (7.1:1 ratio), 30-pound PowerPro braided line, Lobina Lures Rick Clunn’s Rio Rico (shad pattern).

> Wagy replaced the stock hooks with Gamakatsu #4 Short Shank trebles. He also ties his own feathers for the back of his topwater baits.

> Worm gear: 7’ medium-heavy JB Custom Rods Huntin’ Stick casting rod, same reel, 14-pound Gamma Edge fluorocarbon line, 1/8-ounce Eco Pro Tungsten weight, 3/0 Owner Wide Gap Plus worm hook, 7” Berkley PowerBait Power Worm (blue fleck).

> He also had a worm rod rigged up with 16-pound Gamma Edge and a 3/16-ounce Eco Pro weight.

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “Slowing down and staying confident with the choices I made to stay on that end of the river versus making a long run every day and maximizing my fishing time.”

> Performance edge – “My Lowrance electronics. They really helped me keep up with the tides. My Power-Pole was a pretty key thing as well. I used that to help hold me in place on a lot of those places so I didn’t have to move the trolling motor a whole lot.”
