The 15-pound bag that Scott Martin caught today was more than enough to keep him in the lead at the midway point of the Potomac River FLW Tour Major. His closest pursuer now, however, is a guy attempting to pull off a feat that's never been accomplished on the circuit.

Martin's bag was about 7 1/2 pounds lighter than his day-1 haul and gave him a 2-day total of 37-11. He has a 2 1/2-pound edge over David Dudley, the reigning Angler of the Year (AOY) and the winner of last month's event at Beaver who's trying to become the first competitor to win back-to-back tournaments in the Tour's 17-year history.

Dudley, a resident of nearby Virginia who has intimate knowledge of the fishery, weighed 18-07 today to give him a 35-02 total. Rookie Colby Schrumpf caught 16-11 to climb three places to 3rd with 34-08.

Veteran Ron Shuffield came in just an ounce shy of 18 pounds today to move up 16 places to 4th with a 34-05 aggregate. Three-time AOY Clark Wendlandt rounded out the Top 5 with a 17-08 bag for a 34-03 total that moved him up 12 slots.

Here's a look at the Top 10 (deficit margin from leader is indicated by red numbers in parentheses):

1. Scott Martin: 37-11
2. David Dudley: 35-02 (2-09)
3. Colby Schrumpf: 34-08 (3-03)
4. Ron Shuffield: 34-05 (3-06)
5. Clark Wendlandt: 34-03 (3-08)
6. Jim Moynagh: 34-01 (3-10)
7. Dave Lefebre: 33-11 (4-00)
8. Clifford Pirch: 33-00 (4-11)
9. Bryan Thrift: 32-10 (5-01)
10. Chris Baumgardner: 32-09 (5-02)

The weights are as tightly bunched as expected – the Top 10 are separated by just a little more than 5 pounds and all 20 competitors who'll fish on day 3 are within 6 1/2 pounds of the lead. Those who survived today's cut are greatly looking forward to tomorrow, when there will be far less pressure on the several community holes that are holding the majority of the quality fish.

In addition to Dudley, Shuffield and Wendlandt, newcomers to the Top 10 today were Moynagh (11th to 6th with a 16-10 bag), Pirch (38th to 8th, 18-05) and Thrift (28th to 9th, 17-03). Those who exited were Mark Rose (2nd to 23rd, 12-12), Gary Yamamoto 4th to 17th, 13-07), Kenneth (Boo) Woods (4th to 22nd, 13-01), Ish Monroe (7th to 2nd, 12-06), Jim Dillard (7th to 11th, 14-13) and Jim Tutt (9th to 12th, 14-14).

It was a rough event for some of the AOY pace-setters as pre-tournament leader Jason Christie finished 125th, Troy Morrow (3rd) landed in 78th and Jay Yelas (5th) ended up 90th. Jacob Powroznik, who came it at No. 2 in the points, finished 36th and Cody Meyer (4th) finished 29th.

David Dudley's 18 1/2-pound bag moved him up 15 places in the standings.

Tomorrow's weather forecast for the area around the nation's capital predicts sunny skies, a high temperature of 80 degrees and a northeasterly wind to 10 mph. The field will be sliced to the Top 10 after the weigh-in, with the winner determined Sunday by highest cumulative weight.

No 5s for Martin

> Day 2: 5, 15-01 (10, 37-11)

After weighing three fish in excess of 5 pounds on day 1, Martin didn't get any bites of that quality today. He did watch his co-angler boat one such fish and saw a few others caught around him.

He elected to stay all day in a high-traffic grass bed and conserve his other areas for the weekend.

"Yesterday I went way down south and came all the way back, but today I decided not to run," he said. "I wanted to milk that spot for all it was worth. I felt I could catch 17 pounds, and with one good bite I would've had that.

"I'll run all the other stuff tomorrow. I've got several really good places with fish on them."

A 3 1/2-pounder was the biggest fish he managed today.

"With all the boats in there (he estimated that there were 40 as opposed to about 20 on day 1), I had to do a lot more worm-casting and flipping – I had to go low and slow. There should be only maybe two boats in there tomorrow, which will be really good. I should have lots of room to move around.

"This is a great fishery, it's a lot of fun and I'm fishing the way I want to fish. I'm really looking forward to the weekend."

2nd: Dudley Dialing In

> Day 2: 5, 18-07 (10, 35-02)

Dudley said that on a scale of 1 to 10, his confidence level for the weekend is a 10.

"I think I'm getting dialed in a lot more as to what I need to look for, so I feel good," he said. "I grew up on this fishery and nothing changes here on the river. The fish are always in the same spots.

"I just grinded it out in a community area today. (With fewer boats) tomorrow, I'll be able to move around a lot more."

He went through more than 20 keepers today and had two that weighed a little more than 4 pounds each. He didn't lose any that would've gone to the scale.

He said there's still plenty of quality fish in the grassy area he's exploiting.

"I'm excited to get back out there."

3rd: Schrumpf not Crowded

> Day 2: 5, 16-11 (10, 34-08)

Schrumpf, a 29-year-old property manager from Illinois, was happy to advance to the weekend for the first time in his fledgling pro career. A 92nd at Hartwell was his best showing in his first three outings.

"It's nice to put a good tournament together," he said. "I need to get some momentum going for the rest of the season."

He's focusing on just a few locales and said he doesn't have a lot of company. He caught well over 20 keepers today, including a 4 1/4-pounder, and didn't lose any that would've helped him.

Rookie Colby Schrumpf is already assured of his best tour-level finish – by far.

"Most of the areas I've got pretty much to myself. My best place is like a 14- to 15-pound spot, and then I have to hope I stumble into a big bite. A lot of fish seem to be congregated there and I'm fishing some grass and a little wood.

"I got two big ones the first day and another one today, but I might not get one tomorrow and I could come in with 14 pounds."

4th: Shuffield Taking it Slowly

> Day 2: 5, 17-15 (10, 34-05)

Shuffield said he's working some areas that produced for him in the past and he isn't having much of an issue with crowding.

"I'm fishing a lot of real subtle areas, but it's all still grass-oriented," he said. "I've been seeing maybe 15 or 20 boats throughout the course of the day, but I think most of them are going through the area too quickly, and I'm fishing a little different than most."

He said he's fishing a "typical grass pattern," throwing topwaters and soft plastics and covering a lot of water. His bag was topped by two fish in the 4 3/4-pound range.

"I'm going pretty slow and waiting the tide out, waiting for it to get right, and I've been fortunate to get a couple of big bites. I got my two best bites in the last hour and a half today, and I won't have that benefit tomorrow because we have to be in earlier.

"The place shouldn't have as much pressure tomorrow, though, and that'll be a plus."

23rd: No Good Ones for Rose

> Day 2: 5, 12-12 (10, 31-00)

Rose's bag was 5 1/2 pounds lighter than the one he caught on day 1 and he fell from a tie for 2nd place to finish outside the 20-cut. He cranked and flipped wood and rock on both days.

"I wish I had a good answer for what the difference was," he said. "I caught just as many fish and ran the same pattern and ran some new water. I didn't get any of those 4-pounders that I caught yesterday, though. They were all 2 or 2 1/2 pounds."

He lost his best bite of the day – a fish he estimated at about 4 pounds.

"I should've gotten more big bites than that, though. I had one grass bed where a lot of the 14- and 15-pound bags came out of, but I was doing something a little different and I didn't go there.

"I thought what I was doing would probably produce fewer bites, but I might get a big one. Now I wish I would've gone to that grass bed. The competitor in me is a little disappointed, but I'm also thankful for what I did catch."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 145 anglers, 136 limits (13 more than day 1), 6 fours, 1 two, 2 zeroes (one more than day 1).

> BassFan Big Stick Luke Clausen turned in a respectable showing in defense of his 2011 Potomac victory with a 30th-place finish. Meanwhile, Jay Yelas' 90th-place finish was his worst in his last 20 events and will cost him dearly in the AOY race. To read their competition wrapups, click here.
