It looks like all that time Randall Tharp's spent at Florida's Lake Okeechobee the past two winters might pay off big-time this week. After 2 days of the season-opening FLW Tour Open, there's not a single angler within 10 pounds of him and only one within 15.

The Alabamian topped the 30-pound mark for the second straight day, weighing 30-04 to boost his total to 63-13. The runner-up here last year and in the Forrest Wood Cup last summer is in search of his first tour-level victory.

His closest pursuers are a pair of Floridians – John Cox and defending champion Brandon McMillan. Cox bagged 25-04 to move up one spot to 2nd with 52-14 and McMillan caught 14-05 (considerably less than half of his day-1 haul) to fall one position to 3rd with 47-12.

Art Ferguson III held onto the No. 4 slot with a 20-04 bag that gave him a 47-00 total. Steve Kennedy moved up one place to 5th with an 18-03 stringer that gave him a 44-04 aggregate.

Here's the lower half of the Top 10:

6. Jeremy York: 43-05
7. J. Todd Tucker: 40-08
8. Bryan Thrift: 39-14
9. Scott Martin: 39-09
10. Nick Gainey: 38-12

Tharp is now an angler with a wealth of experience at the Big "O" and seems supremely confident that he can continue to catch massive bags. He's making a lot of stops each day, but catching the vast majority of his weight during quick flurries when his timing is right at a particular locale.

McMillan was neck-and-neck with him after day 1, but lost a couple of big bites today and never found the groove that would lead to another giant stringer. Cox has been extremely strong so far, but unable to keep pace with the leader.

The competitors in the 6th through 10th positions are all newcomers to the Top 10 today. Big moves were made by Thrift (up 32 places with a 24-01 bag) and Gainey (up 35 positions with 24-06).

Falling out of the Top 10 were Roland Martin (5th to 11th, 11-10 today), Todd Auten (7th to 12th, 13-08), Glenn Browne (8th to 17th, 12-11), Justin Lucas (9th to 35th, 8-07) and Matt Peters (10th to 54th, 3-02).

The north wind died down considerably today, but will pick up again tomorrow with the arrival of a storm front. The WeatherChannel.com forecast predicts daytime showers with a high of 74 degrees and a northwest wind to 17 mph.

The field was cut to the Top 20 today and will be reduced to the Top 10 for Sunday's final round. The winner will be determined by cumulative weight.

Status Quo for Tharp

> Day 2: 5, 30-04 (10, 63-13)

Tharp said his day was pretty similar to the previous one. This time, though, his best fish was a 7-pounder instead of a 9 1/2.

"It was almost identical except (his best action) happened in a different place," he said. "It was really slow this morning and I went to a place I didn't fish yesterday and I had a limit by about 9:30.

"Then the first place I went hunting for big fish I caught five in a row – all of my 30 pounds – in about 30 minutes. I fished the rest of the day and caught two more 5-pounders, but they didn't help me. I caught 20 fish total and seven were 5 pounds or over."

The knowledge he's accumulated over the preceding months is playing a huge role in his success.

"You can't do what I'm doing all over the lake. There's a few select places where the big ones are living and you need to be there when they're feeding, and that seems to be a different time every day."

He'd love to boat another 30 pounds tomorrow and boost his lead again for the final day.

"I feel like I need one more big stringer – nothing's a sure thing on this lake and with the (caliber of) guys behind me. I could go all day and not hit that magical stretch.

"It'd be nice to get another big bag tomorrow because I think I could go just about anywhere on the lake and catch 15 pounds on the final day."

2nd: Cox Lost a Pair

> Day 2: 5, 25-04 (10, 52-14)

Cox said his deficit to Tharp wouldn't be so great if he'd boated his two best bites.

"I missed a couple of big ones today, but maybe I can get them tomorrow," he said. "I think they were both at least 8 pounds – they just took off stripping drag. One of them pulled off and the other one bent the hook.

John Cox wouldn't be so far behind Tharp had he landed his two biggest bites today.

"They might've been tarpon or something, but I'm hoping they were bass. They were in the same place where I caught the other ones."

He's fishing a mile-long stretch that he has all to himself. He had to move out a ways today because the reduction in wind lowered the water level.

"The area's not that great, but when you get bit, it's a big one. I had a day in practice when I probably caught 40 pounds, but I haven't found them grouped up like that again."

3rd: McMillan Felt the Pressure

> Day 2: 5, 14-05 (10, 47-12)

McMillan had some additional company in his best areas today and the added traffic took its toll. He had a 7-pounder in his bag, but the other four were small.

"I figured there was going to be boats, but I thought I could get two good ones this morning and then run around the rest of the day and catch 25 to 28 pounds," he said. "I just never came across that one mat that had them all in there.

"I lost two real good ones – those two and the big one I caught all came out of the same mat, but that was the only one I hit just right. This isn't like the normal Okeechobee, when you can get on one spot and you're golden. There's a lot that plays into it and the pressure has really done a number on these fish."

He'll be back in the north end tomorrow and he'll welcome the impending weather.

"Any type of little cold front makes what I'm doing better – you just have to fish slower. I know where I'm going and I know how I'm going to fish, so I just need to figure out where's the best place to start."

4th: No Complaints from Ferguson

> Day 2: 5, 20-04 (10, 47-00)

Ferguson said his day was "not that great," but he has no qualms about the position he's in heading into the weekend.

"I'm not complaining," he said. "I wish I was a little closer to the leader, but I'll take 4th place going into day 3.

"The area I'm in, I could pop a 30- to 35-pound bag. If I could get that going and (Tharp) stumbles, it could be a big turnaround."

He said there were boats in his area today that weren't there on day 1, but he didn't think that affected him too badly. The fish just didn't cooperate as well.

Art Ferguson III topped the 20-pound mark for the second straight day and sits in 4th place.

"They definitely didn't bite as good. I'm hoping the front that's coming in will light them up.

"I'm going for broke in one spot, and that's something that's worked out in the past. With that big front coming and bringing that wind, it's going to change a lot of guys' gameplans."

5th: Kennedy Climbs

> Day 2: 5, 18-03 (10, 44-04)

Kennedy moved up one place in the standings despite weighing a bag that was nearly 8 pounds lighter than the one he'd brought in the previous day.

"I didn't have a good day," he said. "There was one place where I caught them all between 10 and 11 (o'clock) yesterday and when I finally got over there, I never got to fish the best stretch. There were boats on everything.

"I wasn't there defending it, though, so it wasn't mine to claim."

His bag was headed up by a 5 1/2-pounder that he thinks might've been a fish that his co-angler lost earlier. That came at the end of the day.

"I never made another flip after that. Justin Lucas had motor issues, so him and his partner jumped in my boat to go back in. I'd have loved to have fished another 50 feet along that stretch."

His plan for day 3 is still fluid.

"It will be until I get settled on something. I've got a bunch of schooling fish and I like to catch those just for fun – it's painful to flip all day for the few bites you get. But there's a good flipping stretch before I get to the schoolers, so I'll probably kill 30 minutes there."

160th: Wind Buried Elias

> Day 2: 0, 0-00 (3, 3-09)

Elias did a total flip-flop in the wake of his stunning victory at Guntersville in the final FLW Tour Open of 2011. He finished last in this one after opting not to weigh in the 6 or 7 pounds he caught today, knowing he'd be buried in the standings regardless.

He's fared well at the Big "O" over the years, including a victory in a 1988 B.A.S.S. Top 100, but couldn't pull it together this time.

"I went in thinking I was going to do real good, but I didn't find enough in practice and what I had was vulnerable to the north wind," he said. "It just smoked all of my water.

"Then I broke down this morning and lost a couple hours. It was one of those deals that started off bad and stayed bad."
