It was back to reality for day 2 of the Champlain FLW Tour Open. Yesterday's wide-open bite that produced a record-breaking 24-plus-pound limit for Gary Yamamoto and seven other bags over 19 pounds gave way to windy, post-frontal conditions. The weights dipped back to normal.

Yamamoto weighed 7 pounds less than

he did yesterday and still leads, although he now shares the lead with Dave Wolak, who roped 19 pounds today. Both anglers boast of a 2-day, 41-12 total.

Connecticut FLW Tour rookie Daryl Biron continues to hang tough and with a 17-10 limit improved a spot to 3rd.

Florida's Arnie Lane, who began the day in 3rd, nosedived. He was fishing Ticonderoga and high winds today that produced 3-footers may have complicated the run or the bite down there. After a 9-15 limit, Lane missed the cut and finished 29th.

Maryland's Bryan Schmitt, a regional pro who finished 4th this year at the Potomac Tour Open, improved a spot to 4th with a 17-08 limit.

Scott Canterbury made a strong move from 8th to 5th by virtue of an 18-03 sack, while Glenn Browne made a huge jump from 26th to 6th with the day's best bag at 20 pounds even. The jump assures that Browne will leave the event as the Tour Opens points leader (the Top 5 after the Guntersville finale qualify for the 2012 Forrest Wood Cup).

The field is now cut to the Top 20 who'll fish tomorrow. The field cuts again after tomorrow to the Top 10. Here's a look at the Top 20 pros who made the cut. Total weight is followed by distance from leader in red.

Tomorrow's weather forecast calls for more sunny, high skies but slick conditions, which means the run to Ticonderoga will be a easy.

The sun should again help those who are fishing for largemouths slightly off the bank in milfoil. Clearly, the ultra-shallow bite seemed off today.

Gary Yamamoto thinks his water today might have been beat up, but slick conditions tomorrow should allow him to run other stuff.

Yamamoto Not Sure What Happened

> Day 2: 5, 17-08 (10, 41-12)

A lot of times at Champlain, the difference between days is measured by ounces. So the 7-pound difference for Yamamoto is huge. He still retains the lead, but now he shares it, and he can't put a finger to what exactly was the problem today.

He still fished shallow for largemouths and noted: "Maybe I just ran out of places to go. But I still have one whole area that I didn't go to – I just kept plugging away in the area I was in. Today I saw a lot more boats hitting some of the stuff, so maybe I had some competition in the area I was fishing."

One other difference today: He stopped this morning and threw a ChatterBait in some shallow grass, which he tipped with his own Slim Senko. He caught a few doing that and said he'll probably try it again tomorrow. Other than that, the slick conditions will finally allow him to reach some water he practiced on, and perhaps even some historic stuff from other visits here.

"I still feel pretty confident I can still do well," he said.

Wolak Still Bouncing

> Day 2: 5, 19-04 (10, 41-12)

Wolak won last year's Champlain Bassmaster Northern Open and is in position to win this contest too. The former Pennsylvanian grew up fishing lakes like Champlain and the Finger Lakes in New York and said he's successful because he ad-libs. This week, he's bouncing between species and once he finds something, he runs with it. He described it as "fishing on the fly."

It happened today when he started on smallmouths instead of largemouths, and he boxed a good limit early. He later added two 4-pound largemouths to his bag, which brought him up above 19 pounds.

"It feels good," he said of his co-lead. "It's always nice coming up here and I love to fish this lake. I made a real good decision to go for smallmouths first today, even though I had largemouths on the brain from yesterday. It was cold and windy and that's what made me think smallmouths and I had 15 pounds pretty early. That gave me the ability to settle in and go largemouth fishing later on.

"I fished a lot of new stuff today," he added. "Yesterday I ran around a lot and the stuff that was marginally good yesterday, I didn't bother with today. And I added some new things to the repertoire – just fishing history and things like that. So I believe I have a lot of things to go to over the next 2 days, and less boats out there will allow me to fish it more thoroughly."

4th: Schmitt Was Stranded

> Day 2: 5, 17-08 (10, 38-03)

It was almost total disaster for Schmitt, who blew a powerhead and was dead in the water with 17 1/2 pounds in the box. Five other pros denied his request for a ride in, then Jeremy York and his co-angler Larry Butler came to the rescue. York rode Schmitt and co back and checked in early. In all, Schmitt lost 5 hours of fishing.

Schmitt, of course, was eternally grateful. He made the cut, but now he has to figure out his ride. If he can retrieve his boat, he said the Mercury service crew can fix it. If not, he'll borrow a buddy's rig.

"I'll be fishing in something tomorrow – what that'll be, I don't know," he said.

He added that he stayed in the northern portion of the lake and was able to run at a decent clip along the west shore.

"I'd venture to say that if I'd have had those 5 hours of fishing I lost, I could have had close to what I weighed yesterday. It definitely changed up a little bit, but my fish were still biting."

So far he's weighed all largemouths, except for one bruiser smallmouth yesterday.

5th: Canterbury Having a Blast

> Day 2: 5, 18-03 (10, 37-06)

Canterbury, who calls Springville, Ala. home, recorded back-to-back strong bags and trails the leaders by 4-06. That's a wide margin, and he'll likely have to break the 20-pound barrier to catch them, but it's doable.

"I'm just having fun," he said. "I'm fishing a lot of new water each day. I don't have anything spectacular at all. I'm just fishing like I like to fish and it's been fun. The most fun thing about it is you never know if it's a largemouth or smallmouth. And I've caught some big pike."

He's fishing the north end but may go to Ticonderoga tomorrow. Either way, he's confident he can get a lot of bites again. But moving up will be "just a matter of getting a couple good bites. You have to have some 4-pounders up here or you won't do any good. Catching a 2-pounder's like catching nothing at all."

He noted he's catching most of his fish in less than 8 feet of water and his bag today included three largemouths and two smallmouths.

Additional Notes

9th: Joe Lucarelli (10, 35-11)
"The big front went through, it was post-front today, and I think anybody who was fishing shallow in that 3-foot zone to isolated pieces of cover – I think those fish kind of didn't go today. Those guys who were off the bank in 5, 6, 8 feet in milfoil – they caught those fish.

"The largemouths didn't go for me early, so I switched over to smallmouths. The smallmouth bite was severely off, so around 11:30 I went back to largemouths. When the sun poked out I started catching them on the jig again.

"Tomorrow, with light winds, plays right into my hands. I might fish smallmouth stuff I haven't fished in years. It could be one of those days when they get on the topwater or jerkbait. I'm going to gamble a little bit."

39th: Mark Rose (10, 29-11)
(Editor's note: Mark Rose is the highest-ranked pro fishing the event. He began the day in 23rd with 17-09.)
"I caught 12 pounds and I wish I had a really good answer for what happened today. I caught one big smallmouth yesterday on a spinnerbait – it was close to 5 – and I didn't do it very long yesterday, so that had me doing it most of the day today. I thought those fish would be eating a topwater and spinnerbait with the warm water mixing with that cool air temperature, but gosh, in the last hour I had to go catch what I caught on largemouths late in the day.

"It's a little disappointing. Anytime to go to a lake that has this many good fish in it and you catch 12 pounds, it's just a little disappointing."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 135 pros, 118 limits, 1 four, 2 threes, 2 twos, 12 zeroes.

> The twelve zeroes today doesn't necessarily mean 12 pros couldn't catch a fish. It's common for those with no hope for a check, and who don't care about the points, to not weigh their fish on cut day.

> Five of the Top 20 are Bassmaster Elite Series pros, including Wolak.

> In addition to Wolak, who won here last year, Shinichi Fukae (10th) won last year's Champlain FLW Series.
