Tommy Biffle was fishing at home, so it's no surprise he won last week's Arkansas River Bassmaster Central Open. What was a little surprising was that Biffle boarded an aluminum boat to do it.
He pocketed a little more than $54,000 for the win, but was not awarded a Bassmaster Classic berth because he didn't fish the complete Central Open season – he was forced to miss the Lewisville opener
due to sponsor commitments.
He caught his fish on his eponymous Gene Larew Biffle Bug. What follows is an in-depth look at how he won.
Practice
Biffle lives maybe 10 or 15 minutes away from where he eventually won the tournament, which was immediately below the Ft. Gibson Dam. Yet he still practiced 5 days.
He said he spent the first 4 days of practice fishing various pools and could catch them "fairly well" in each of the pools. But his theory was that those pools had been beat up. There's no off-limits for Opens, and the pools had been thrashed.
"I tried to get to the dam in my Ranger and I couldn't," he noted. "So on the last day of practice I borrowed an aluminum and put in up there. I fished a circle around in there for about an hour and had 15 or 20 bites on the Biffle Bug and Hardhead.
"The water looks terrible up there," he added. "It's flat banks, pea gravel, there's not any big rocks or wood – there's just one tree in the whole deal. So I figured not too many people would fish up there."
Once he caught the fish, he had to test whether he could access the water from the tournament launch. But he decided not to try it and waited for day 1 to take his shot in the borrowed boat.
Additionally, there was an area below the dam that lay behind a buoy line. He wanted to fish it and just prior to blast-off, he asked for and received permission to fish it. For a discussion of that decision by tournament manager Chris Bowes, click here.

There was never a guarantee Biffle would be able to reach his water. The water was up a little on day 1 and he never touched bottom, he said. The second day, he hit bottom going up and back. He thought the water would drop even more for day 3, but it came up just enough for him to make it in again.
The first 2 days, he caught his fish early – he was done at the dam by 9:00 on day 1 and 9:30 on day 2. After that he said he "fished around" up and down the river and would catch one every now and then "pretty steady all day."
Day 3 was cloudy and it took until 10:20 to boat his first fish. He said he didn't worry. He knew the fish were there so he buckled down and caught his five.
Winning Pattern Notes
"There was never any current any of the days," Biffle said. "What I was keying on was the edge of the little channel drop-off. The deepest water up there was like 5 feet, and most of it was 4. But a lot of it was 2. I'd throw the Biffle Bug and try to keep it close to that channel edge.
"In the mornings they'd be in a foot to a foot and a half. Then later I'd catch them better off the channels."
The Larew Hardhead is a hinged football-head jig, meant for swimming. Biffle said he'd make long casts with the Hardhead/Biffle Bug combo, then reel it back – a technique called bottom-buggin'. He lost many baits due to all the snagged line and debris below the dam.
This marks the third event in a little over a year that Biffle's won with the bottom-buggin' technique using the Gene Larew Biffle HardHead and Biffle Bug.
