Fletcher Shryock's debut at the triple-A level in January was a bit inauspicious as he finished 161st out of 194 anglers in the first Bassmaster Southern Open of 2011 at Florida's Lake Toho.

He followed that up with a shocker, though.

The 25-year-old Ohioan, from a city appropriately named Newcomerstown, figuratively came out of nowhere to win the second stop on the Southern Open circuit last week at Lake Norman in South Carolina. He topped the runner-up, Toho winner and veteran Elite Series pro Gerald Swindle, by 5 1/2 pounds.

He grew up fishing with his father and the duo participated in some local tournaments during his youth, but he pursued a more adrenalin-filled sport (dirt-bike racing) in high school and in the years that immediately followed. He said he now makes a good living running a business that buys and sells scrap catalytic converters for precious-metal recovery, and he got serious about competitive fishing just 2 years ago.

Now he's bagged a slot in bass-fishing's premier event under B.A.S.S.'s new win-and-you're-in Bassmaster Classic qualification format. His 49-09 total over 3 days earned him nearly $57,000 in cash and prizes (including a new boat), along with the berth in the 2012 Classic at the Red River out of Shreveport, La.

"I didn't care (initially) about the money or the boat – that's all great and I'm sure it'll soak in a couple of weeks from now," he said. "It was all about the Classic in my mind the whole time."

Here's how he pulled it off.

Practice

Shryock had never been to Norman before, so after extensive Internet research on the lake and past tournaments it's hosted, he came down a couple of weeks early to get the lay of it in person. He and a buddy entered a local event and caught over 14 pounds in just a couple of hours before his trolling motor broke down.

"We caught all those fish in a little backwater area," he said. "I'm not a clear-water guy – I don't like it. I knew that to have a chance of doing well or winning, I'd have to go up the (Catawba) River, and I actually told a couple of friends that I believed I could win up there. I just knew that if I found the right batch of fish, it would be over.

"I felt like I could get more bites on the main lake, but the quality was much better up north."

He targeted pre-spawn fish exclusively – primarily with a rattlebait, but also with a flipping stick.

"I didn't want to go after fish that were in transition. It was that way in Florida – they were pre-spawn on Monday and then spawning on Thursday.

"My fish were completely pre-spawn. I didn't want them to change on me overnight."

He said the fish in his primary area – adjacent to a rocky bar on the main river – were likely in there gorging on crawfish and shad. It featured a hard bottom littered with shells and a lot of woody cover.

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 14-08
> Day 2: 5, 17-12
> Day 3: 5, 17-05
> Total = 15, 49-09

Shryock had his 14 1/2 pounds by about 9:30 on day 1.

"You can't win a tournament on the first day, but you sure can lose it and I felt pretty good that I didn't do that," he said. "I caught all those fish on a Strike King Red Eye Shad in sexy shad and they were just choking on it.

"I didn't get any real big ones – I felt like I was just picking off the aggressive ones."

His day-2 bag was more than 3 pounds heavier than his opening-day haul, courtesy of a pair of 5-pounders, and he took over the lead. However, he said he lost one that would've weighed better than 8.

The weather took a turn toward the nasty on day 3, cooling off the water in his area and also adding some stain to it. That hindered the rattlebait bite and caused him to resort to a combination of flipping and throwing a shakey-head.

He struggled for much of the day, but eventually compiled another solid bag. It was topped by a 7 1/2-pounder that came from nearly the same place as the giant he'd lost the day before.

"In my mind I might've thought I was going to be back at the dock at 11:00 eating lunch, but it turned out to be a grind. Looking back, I'm glad I had to work hard for those fish on the last day. People can't say I just got lucky."

Winning Gear Notes

  • Rattlebait gear: 7' medium-action Wright & McGill Skeet Reese S-Glass cranking rod, Shimano Caenan casting reel (6.5:1 ratio), 15-pound Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon line, Strike King Red Eye Shad (sexy shad).

    > He replaced the stock hooks on the bait with size 4 Mustad KVD Elite Triple Grip trebles.

  • Flipping gear: 7'6" Wright & McGill Skeet Reese Micro Honeycomb Heavy Cover rod, Shimano Curado casting reel (7:1 ratio), 20-pound Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon, 1-ounce or 3/8-ounce Strike King tungsten weight (pegged), 4/0 Lazer TroKar flipping hook, Berkley PowerBait Chigger Craw (green-pumpkin) or Strike King Rodent ('Bama bug).

  • Shakey-head gear: 6'11" medium-heavy Wright & McGill Skeet Reese Shaky Head/Senko rod, Shimano Stradic 2500 spinning reel, 8-pound Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon, 1/4-ounce Strike King Tour Grade tungsten jighead, Berkley Power Shaky Worm (green-pumpkin).

    The Bottom Line

    > Main factor in his success – "Getting away from where everyone else was and what everyone else was doing. If I'd tried to fish side-by-side with Gerald Swindle, doing the same thing he was doing, he would've killed me."

    > Performance edge – "It's too hard to say because there's so much that has to come together. It was all one big package."

    Notable

    > Other than the third Southern Open at Tennessee's Douglas Lake in early June, Shryock is unsure what other competitive events he'll enter this year. "I plan to go and spend some time at the Red River and I'll probably try to get into a couple of smaller tournaments down there. Besides that, I really don't know."

    > He'd like to fish at the tour level, but is unwilling to fund that quest on his own. "I honestly think I'm capable of doing well, but I'm not going to do it all myself. When I was racing, I got on TV a couple of times, but I was always the guy who just made the cut and got a check, and at the end of the day I was still broke and busted up (physically). I got out of racing because I didn't want to be broke and chasing a dollar just to chase a dream."
