So much for the cold front. Today's post-cold-front, big-wind conditions improved the fishing for many competitors at the Harris Chain Elite Series – especially the sight-fishermen, and especially those sight-fishermen in certain areas.

Evidence? Shaw Grigsby rolled into his pond and saw big fish all around. He sacked a stout 29 1/2 pounds, anchored by a 10 and an 8, and now leads the derby by about

8 pounds. He started the day in 11th and 6 pounds in back of the lead, so in all it was a 14-pound turnaround in the standings.

Pat Golden, yesterday's leader, fished the same pond as Grigsby, but a different portion of it, and weighed just 11-03, which dropped him to 4th.

Grant Goldbeck was the third boat in that pond and made one of the most remarkable standings leaps in recent memory. Goldbeck began the day in 97th (he weighed a single 1-pounder yesterday), but sacked 27-01 and rocketed up to 16th.

Golden theorized that fish had moved up and locked on overnight. He was toward the back of the pond today, whereas Grigsby and Goldbeck were nearer the mouth, and that made the difference. Golden said he did have a 6-pounder spotted but ran out of time, and he saw other fish swimming as he left.

All of which sets up an interesting dynamic, and one fans should watch. The general thought during practice was that sight-fishing might last a day or two, but couldn't win. That forced several pros to discount the pattern. And plenty of the leaders are on a different pattern that targets spawning areas for a mix of fish in different phases, although they're starting to intercept some bedding fish too.

Will the sight-fish run out? Can the post-spawn fishermen make up enough ground to overcome Grigsby's 8-pound lead?

After all, defending Bassmaster Classic champion and B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year Kevin VanDam's currently in 2nd. He's mum on what he's doing, but he's not sight-fishing, and whatever it is, it's working. Today he added 18-03 to his 17-09 day-1 weight. That's a healthy average and if Grigsby even slips a little, KVD should be right there.

Florida native Chris Lane, who finished 4th here in 2008, rounds out the Top 5. A 17-pound bag helped him improve from 13th to 5th.

Only the Top 50 advanced to fish tomorrow. Rookie Dean Alexander was last in with 20-05. Dean Rojas was first out with 20-04. After tomorrow, the field will cut to the Top 12 for the final day.

Here's a look at the current Top 20. Total weight is followed by distance from leader in red.

1. Shaw Grigsby: 43-15
2. Kevin VanDam: 35-12 (8-03)
3. Stephen Browning: 34-05 (9-10)
4. Pat Golden: 31-10 (12-05)
5. Chris Lane: 31-06 (12-09)
6. James Niggemeyer: 31-02 (12-13)
7. Terry Scroggins: 29-13 (14-02)
8. Cliff Crochet: 29-10 (14-05)
9. Andy Montgomery: 29-04 (14-11)
10. J Todd Tucker: 29-01 (14-14)
11. Greg Vinson: 28-14 (15-01)
12. Casey Ashley: 28-10 (15-05)
13. Matt Greenblatt: 28-06 (15-09)
14. Alton Jones: 28-03 (15-12)
15. Ott DeFoe: 28-02 (15-13)
16. Grant Goldbeck: 28-02 (15-13)
17. Jeff Kriet: 26-15 (17-00)
18. Jonathon Vandam: 26-05 (17-10)
19. Jami Fralick: 26-04 (17-11)
20. Brandon Palaniuk: 25-13 (18-02)

Kevin Wirth, who began the day in 2nd, dropped to 23rd after a 5-pound bag.

Derek Remitz zeroed for the second straight day.

Tomorrow should provide another jumble in the standings. It'll be sunny again, which means sight-fishing will be possible, and other areas might turn on just as much as the three-boat pond.

However, if the sight-fishing does nosedive, it could still take the predicted 15 pounds a day to win, although at this point, the winning mark might be closer to 16.

The wildcard remains the spawn. Are more fish coming?

Grigsby Ecstatic

> Day 2: 5, 29-08 (10, 43-15)

Grigsby isn't sure where this bag stacks up against others across his career. He's caught some 33- and 32-pound bags, but this is certainly one of the least expected.

And there was a tense moment out there today. He snapped his rod on the 8-pounder, and noted it's lucky he's such a good fly-fisherman, because he played her in just like he would with a fly rod by palming the line.

"Every day's a Jesus day, but this was a big Jesus day," he joked.

And it should be noted that Grigsby's considered by many to be a father of sight-fishing. And he's fishing his home state. So there's a general feeling that if the event's going to be won sight-fishing, it'll be Grigsby who does it. In other words, nobody's going to beat him at his own game.

"It feels great," Grigsby said after weigh-in. "Anytime you catch a 10-pound fish in any tournament in your life, it's awesome. So yeah, I'm pretty excited. It was all fun and good and I didn't lose it. Everything worked."

He said the sun was the major difference today: He arrived at his area, the sun popped out, and he saw the big ones. But they're not stacked. He only got six bites today, and he referred to the fishing as "slim pickings" – perhaps a portent of tomorrow and the following day.

Wind forced KVD to change areas entirely.

"I don't know about tomorrow," he said. "I think there's a little more there. There may be some 2-pounders and stuff. But there's a lot of pressure and there were some really good strings caught. I don't think there's going to be another big bag caught in there – a 30-pound string, that's pretty strong. But I'm going to try to catch 30 pounds tomorrow, and the next day.

"Like I said onstage, if we could have held this the first day of practice, there would have been a lot of 30s every day."

2nd: VanDam Changed

> Day 2: 5, 18-03 (10, 35-12)

Wind was a big factor today, and it affected VanDam to the point that his preferred area "had 4-foot waves" so he "totally" changed his area and approach.

"But it worked out," he said. "I had a much better day as far as getting bit. The one thing about this place here is it changes a lot from day to day. Yesterday I felt pretty good to have a decent day. I had 17 pounds with this cold front and I was pretty excited to have had five bites. But these guys are the very best in the world. They adapt real well. This morning I was talking to one of the media guys and said, 'Somebody's just going to wreck them today.' It's too good a fishery, and it's setting up to where these fish are going to move up into the right area.

"If you pull up in that right little spot, it can happen in a hurry. I saw glimpses of that today, but I just didn't get the big fish."

He didn't talk much about his pattern, but did say he's not sight-fishing. He's waiting to see "what the conditions bring" and then he'll choose which of his patterns to go to.

"I'm hoping I've got something no matter what the weather conditions that'll still work. We'll see. It's not easy out there for sure."

3rd: Browning Had Five Bites

> Day 2: 5, 14-08 (10, 34-05)

Browning's in an area off Griffin that he said is a special management area, which is restricted to 40 hp and below. So he has to lift his big motor out of the water and use the electric. Not a big deal, but his boat swings more with the big motor out, and against the north wind, he relied on his Power-Poles more than ever today.

Stephen Browning has to lift his big motor out of the water – he's fishing a horsepower-restricted area – and said he battled the north wind today.

Browning threw plastics again except his fish today were a mix – meaning, he thinks he caught some spawning fish too, or maybe some pre-spawners (he's not sure). Yesterday most or all of his fish appeared to be spawned out.

"It's tough because you have to position on every cast," he said. "You have to make sure your position's just right before the cast or you're just wasting your time.

"The area's wide-open and there's a lot of other guys in there – probably 12 to 14 guys," he added. "For some reason, (the other) boats are all at the other end. In the Classic, I stayed away from the crowd in Cataouatche and it didn't work out. I'm doing it here again, but this time I'm on the catching end."

The fishing today was more difficult, he noted, and he only had five bites. But he was able to catch another big one, close to 6 pounds, which "goes a long way." He thinks he may have missed that fish yesterday when it bit.

About what phase his fish are in, he said: "They look like they're post-spawn, but you almost think they're in there trying to spawn, or just waiting on the next moon to come along to really get after it. They're typical Florida fish, long and skinny, with just a little bit of belly. I guess some of them are probably hanging out on a nest."

About Grigsby's lead, he said: "Shaw's doing what he's done down here for 40 years. I'm playing the odds. Chris Lane stated earlier this week that this tournament's never been won sight-fishing. I'm going to stick to my gameplan, go fishing, and hopefully get another one of those big sacks like I did yesterday.

4th: Golden on Wrong Side of Pond

> Day 2: 5, 11-03 (10, 31-10)

Golden lacked a big bite today, which was the difference-maker for him yesterday. As noted, he's fishing the same bedding area as Grigsby and Goldbeck, but location was an issue.

"It's just that my end of the pond's not as good as the other end of the pond," Golden said. "It's like a 4-acre lake. I think a lot of fish came in this afternoon and Grant and Shaw are set up at the mouth out there. I've been focusing on the back half – a deep hole where the grassline runs out. I've been trying to catch some staging fish out there on the grass, but they just came in and locked down out there and those guys got into all the big ones. I never could connect with a big one."

B.A.S.S./Seigo Sato
Photo: B.A.S.S./Seigo Sato

Pat Golden says he fished the wrong part of the pond today – Grigsby fished the right part.

When he left for weigh-in, he saw a couple new 5-pounders coming in and setting up, he said, and he wasted 3 hours in one spot working an 8-pounder. She finally hit, he missed and she spooked off. But with the fish he saw at the end of the day, he "feels good" about the possibility of a big sack in there tomorrow.

"It's just us three and we'll be right in there again. The place is really on fire."

5th: Lane Still Believes

> Day 2: 5, 17-01 (10, 31-06)

Lane was clear: He'd never wish ill upon his fellow competitors, but this event has never been won sight-fishing, and he hopes that remains the case. He's banking on that fact and thus won't change.

He caught about 3 more pounds than he did yesterday, and that moved him up eight spots in the standings.

"I feel fantastic about it," he said. "But I was shocked at what happened today. For those fish to move up with the water temperature dropping 5 degrees – it's a shocker to me. But you're fishing against the best guys in the world, so if something changes, these guys figure it out.

"I still think consistency's going to win this tournament. Shaw seems to be on a consistent bite. Is it going to hold up? I don't know."

What made the difference for Lane today was a 7 1/2 he caught in the last hour. And the way he sees it, anyone in the Top 12 right now who catches 17 the next 2 days has a shot.

About how he's fishing, he said: "I'm putting my Power-Poles down and fishing real thorough in an area where I know they spawn. I'm taking my time and catching both spawners and post-spawners. I think there's some pre-spawners too."

6th: Niggemeyer Vs. the Saw

> Day 2: 5, 19-12 (10, 31-02)

James Niggemeyer rebounded from a tough day 1 that included such bizarre incidents as a landowner collecting and chainsawing wood 10 feet away from a big bedding fish. He whacked almost 20 pounds today and moved up 34 spots to 6th.

"It's great – it just makes everything right," he said. "I put a couple fish in the livewell early this morning, then I went back to that (chainsaw) fish, pitched a little Strike King Finesse worm in there, and she ate it on the first pitch. Once I had that fish, I knew if I could fill my limit and cull maybe a few I'd be in good shape. It was exciting and I'm really looking forward to tomorrow. I think things could really turn out good."

He's also been catching some fish by casting. But his bed-fish have been his biggest and he feels that, based on what he saw today, there are more to be found. He's got some water he hasn't fished yet. He doesn't know if other competitors have thrashed it, but he'll probably check tomorrow if he needs to.

"This is the first tournament of the year. I made the cut. I'm pumped."

> He noted he's pitching a Gambler Otter and throwing a Gambler Cane Toad.

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 99 anglers, 68 limits (11 fewer than yesterday), 10 fours, 10 threes, 7 twos, 3 ones, 1 zero (same as yesterday).

> Wirth, who fell from 2nd to 23rd, said: "It was pretty brutal for me. I only had seven bites and I only put three in the boat. Against these guys, you can't stub your toe like I did today. But I'm glad to hang in there and get a check."

> Skeet Reese made the cut in 24th. "Typically Florida fish shut down in a cold front, but obviously, these guys are pretty good. My goal now will be to try to swing for the fence and try to get a Top-20 finish out of this and go on to the next one."

> Aaron Martens (39th): "I gambled today. I had a limit pretty early then found a 6-pounder. I spent 2 hours on her and never caught her. It was a gamble I took."

> Bobby Lane in 93rd noted: "I might have known a little too much about this lake. There was some offshore hydrilla where it was pretty easy in practice to catch 15 to 16 pounds. I kind of got caught up in that, then the sight-fish showed up today."
