Brent Long and Mark Rose put a bit of separation between themselves and the rest of the field at the Guntersville FLW Tour in Alabama today as the former topped 25 pounds for the second straight day and the latter came within a half-pound of that benchmark. Meanwhile, Bryan Thrift moved right to the precipice of wrapping up the Angler of the Year (AOY) crown in the final event of the 2010 regular season.

Long, who's yet to make a cent on Tour this year, has saved his best for last. His 25-08 bag gave him a 51-03 total for 2 days, and he's now in position to make a run at a six-figure check that would erase most – if not all – of the struggles he's endured this year.

He holds a 1 1/4-pound lead over the veteran Rose, who sacked 24-08 today for a 49-15 aggregate. From there, it's more than a 5 1/2-pound drop down to 3rd-place Jim Moynagh, who caught 21-03 today for a 44-06 total.

Keith Combs weighed a 21-12 stringer that moved him up four places to 4th with 44-01. Thrift, the 4th-year pro who was competitive from the get-go and has done nothing but improve to the point that he's now as steady as anyone in the game, also gained four spots with a 21-02 bag and settled into 5th with 43-03.

Here's a look at the Top 10 at the midway point, with red numbers in parentheses indicating deficit margin from the leader:

1. Brent Long: 51-03
2. Mark Rose: 49-15 (1-04)
3. Jim Moynagh: 44-06 (6-13)
4. Keith Combs: 44-01 (7-02)
5. Bryan Thrift: 43-03 (8-00)
6. Jason Reyes: 41-09 (9-10)
7. David Walker: 41-08 (9-11)
8. Luke Clausen: 41-05 (9-14)
9. Jay Yelas: 41-02 (10-01)
10. Jimmy Houston: 40-15 (10-04)

Thrift can clinch the AOY outright if he's in 21st place or higher tomorrow, when the field will be cut to the Top 5 for the final day. In reality, he has a lot more wiggle room than that considering that his closest pursuers in the points are in 98th (Brent Ehrler) and 51st (Ish Monroe) place. Andy Morgan entered at 4th in the AOY race and is 13th in the tournament, but he's saddled with a 54-point deficit that'll be all but impossible to overcome in a single day.

Several anglers made big moves today to reach the Top 10. Foremost among them was Jay Yelas, who rocketed up from 55th place to 9th with a 24-01 sack.

Jason Reyes climbed from 34th to 6th with 22-07 today. Luke Clausen catapulted from 44th to 8th with 23-03 and David Walker improved from 20th to 7th with 21-04.

Day-1 leader Vic Vatalaro's grass action shut off and he fell to 20th with a 13-03 stringer. Joining him in a Top-10 exodus were Craig Dowling (6th to 12th, 17-09), Kyle Mabrey (7th to 22nd, 16-03) and Terry Bolton (10th to 30th, 15-13).

The weather was sunny and hot again, but a mild breeze made conditions a bit more tolerable than on day 1. Tomorrow's forecast calls for scattered thunderstorms and slightly cooler temperatures (high of 88 degrees) with a westerly wind to 7 mph.

The winner will be determined Sunday by highest 4-day weight.

Long Waited his Turn

Long's best ledge was covered up when he arrived this morning, so he went to another locale and put together a 15-pound limit. He got on his preferred spot at about 9:00 and stayed there the rest of the day.

"It was about the same deal again today," he said. "Other people are fishing on places close by, but they're catching smaller fish. The one I'm on has big, quality fish on it."

He pulled out more than a dozen keepers on the day and caught a 7-pounder at about 2:00. He revealed that he's dragging a 3/4-ounce Ernest Langley football jig.

"I'm boat No. 2 tomorrow, so I'm going straight to it and camping out. I'm going to grind it out there and I'll either catch them again, or I won't.

"I'm not going to leave. If I do, somebody else will get on there and I'll regret it."

2nd: Rose's Pattern Basic

Rose described what he's doing as "just typical ledge-fishing."

"I have several places where I located schools of fish in practice and I'm catching them on two crankbaits mostly – a Strike King 6 XD and the 6 XD Silent Assassin. My (co-anglers) are catching more fish than I am dragging worms, but I'm getting a little bit better bite.

"I'm still catching a lot of fish, just not quite as many as they are. I'm mixing in some other baits, too – a big worm, a Sexy Spoon and a 3/4-ounce football jig."

He's caught two 6-pounders on each of the first 2 days. He couldn't get onto his best spot to start the day, so he resorted to another ledge and still came up with big bites.

He thinks he's got enough fish left to get through the rest of the tournament.

"I pre-practiced here and saw the pressure that this place gets, and I knew I had to have something in my hip pocket that I wasn't going to fish for long. If you stay on one place a long time, you've basically given it up.

"I've got plenty of places to catch fish, but I've only got good quality on three spots and I've been fortunate to get one of those spots each morning. If that doesn't happen tomorrow, I could come in with 15 pounds pretty easily."

3rd: Bigger Range for Moynagh

Moynagh's day-1 bag contained five fish that all weighed between 4 1/2 and 5 pounds. He came in 2 pounds lighter today and his sack exhibited more weight variety.

"Yesterday they were all in a certain size range," he said. "Today I had three 5-pounders, but I also weighed in two 3-pounders. What that means is I'm not around that many fish because I wasn't able to cull those 3s.

"I haven't had that giant bite yet – I'm still waiting for it."

The way he sees it, he has few alternatives if his ledge action dries up.

"I have three or four places where I feel like I can catch a good one and a few others to go to where something might happen, or nothing might happen. The problem out here is that other people are fishing where I'm fishing and if all those places are covered up, then what do I do?

"I feel like if somebody leaves, I can pull up and catch a fish or two. But I also sort of feel like I'm skating on thin ice because I don't have a ton of options."

4th: Combs Consistent

Combs is averaging a solid 22 pounds a day and his two bags have varied by only half a pound.

"I've got a little milk run of spots and I'm cranking, throwing a football jig and using one little prototype bait," he said. "I'm mixing it up a little and fishing from 13 feet down to about 20.

"I haven't caught a big one yet. Yesterday everything was about 4 1/2 and today I had a 5."

He divulged that the prototype bait is a Lateral Perch made by Power Tackle, and along with the crankbait, it's producing some of his best fish.

"Today I went to cull one and there was a (regurgitated) big bluegill and a small bluegill in my livewell, and that bait looks just like them. It sort of looks like a spoon, but it really imitates the bluegill well. I'm going to throw it a lot more tomorrow."

He has an early check-in time tomorrow, which concerns him a bit because his best action comes in the latter part of the day.

"With the ledge bite you can go a long time without anything and then catch two good ones back to back. Yesterday I ran nine spots (without catching much), and then I finally got them on the 10th one.

"My spots are all in one stretch of the lake and they're places where several guys have whacked big bags either today or yesterday. It's a timing deal."

5th: Thrift Playing it Cool

One key to Thrift's success is his demeanor – he's not stressing over his impending AOY title, making the Top 5 or anything else.

"I just want to catch them," he said. "Everything else will take care of itself. I need to catch at least 15 pounds tomorrow because I don't want (the AOY) to be close."

He didn't have a real easy time of it today – he caught a 4-pounder and a pair of 3 3/4s late in the day to boost his bag considerably. He boated 40 or 50 keepers on the day, including a 5 1/2-pounder.

"I started the day on some deeper stuff and then I mixed it up a little bit. I caught a couple of those decent ones on a frog and I caught some on a Damiki Mega Miki, which isn't out yet – it'll debut at ICAST.

"I've still got a lot of fish left, but I think a lot of them are small."

6th: Reyes Loading Up Early

Reyes isn't catching a lot of fish, but the bites he's getting are grade A – especially early in the day.

"I pulled in and caught a couple of 6-pounders," he said. "I was worried at the beginning of the tournament because I'd found this nice school, but I was boat 89 the first day. Luckily, I was able to get right on it.

"Today I was boat 5, so it was no problem. Hopefully there'll be nobody there tomorrow because I need to get some work done in the morning. I've done most of my damage in the first hour."

He pulled off the spot at about 9:00 and then returned later in the day, but didn't upgrade. He's throwing a few different baits, including a 10-inch Big Bite Baits Kriet Tail Worm.

"The current was very light again and if they'd really pull it, it'd help me – what it would do is keep them biting a little longer throughout the morning. But being that they're not, that first-light bite is very key for me.

"This is Guntersville and you have to catch a couple of big ones to be in the mix. You could catch 50 keepers and only have 14 pounds."

20th: Vatalaro's Run Fruitless

Vatalaro struggled to locate fish in two grassy areas – one way up the Tennessee River that he didn't hit yesterday and the one where he'd caught his day-leading bag. He ended up scrounging out a stringer that was barely half the size of the one he weighed the previous day.

The river locale is about a 30-mile run from the launch.

"I definitely tried something a little different," he said. "It was the same type of deal (that he fished on day 1) and it was a great spot in practice, but they weren't there.

"Then I ran back to my other spots and they weren't there either. There were literally no fish to be found."

He's dumbfounded as to why the upriver spot didn't produce.

"There were baitfish there, there was current there – everything they needed. It looked perfect. It was a bit of a gamble and it could've paid off huge. But sometimes things like that don't pay off at all."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 136 anglers, 121 limits (one fewer than yesterday), 4 fours, 9 threes, 1 two, 1 zero (one more than yesterday).

> With finishes of 13th, 30th and 10th in the last three events, Combs is on a nice roll after beginning the season with a 133rd-place bomb at Table Rock.

> Reyes, for one, was thankful for the slight breeze that blew today. "It was just enough to make it so that you weren't breathing sweat."
