Edwin Evers had to lower his standards a bit to get in the proper frame of mind to win the Atchafalaya Basin Bassmaster Central Open in Louisiana. The target weights he'd set prior to the event proved to be out of touch with reality.

"I had to change my mindset from thinking 15 to 18 pounds a day would be good to more like 10 or 12," he said. "All of the high, muddy water changed everything."

The Bassmaster Elite Series pro from Oklahoma had to work an extra day to garner the win. After the 3 regulation days, he was tied with Louisiana's Mark Smith at 35-09, so those two went out again on Sunday to determine the champion. Evers caught a tournament-best 14-07 that day while Smith dredged up 10-08.

The win boosted Evers to 3rd on the final points list, just one spot away from a Bassmaster Classic berth. Uncharacteristically, he failed to make the 2010 Classic via the Elite Series points and will thus sit out the sport's premier event for the first time since 2001.

It was his second Open victory – he also notched one at Texas' Sam Rayburn Reservoir in 2004. It came on just his second visit to the Basin – he finished 12th in an '04 Open there that was won by Cliff Pace.

Here's how he did it.

Practice

Evers put in 6 days of practice for the tournament. If he had it to do over again, he would've waited a few more days before leaving home.

"One thing I learned is it's not always good to go down and practice early," he said. "The floods came and changed a bunch of stuff, and the closer (the event) got, the worse the water got."

He knew that flipping would be a big factor, as it always is in Louisiana. He kept his focus on grasslines and mats, and fortunately didn't get too hung up on what he figured would be his primary area.

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 10-14
> Day 2: 5, 10-08
> Day 3: 5, 14-03
> Day 4: 5, 14-07
> Total = 20, 50-00

All of Evers' best stuff required a run of more than 2 hours from the launch in Morgan City, La. That left him a little more than 3 hours to fish each day, and he made the most of that limited time.

In practice he discovered that he could catch fish on a spinnerbait from the outside edges of the grass during the early part of the day. The when the sun got high, he could catch them by punching the mats and flipping to vegetation-laden cutbanks. He ended up catching 10 weigh-in fish via each method, but the flipping stick produced the larger specimens.

He went to his primary area from practice to start day 1, but it was completely unproductive.

"I started to go run some other stuff I'd found and I went by one area that looked identical to a place where I'd caught a 5-pounder in practice," he said. "I decided to stop off there first and I ended up catching a bunch of them there."

He began day 2 in 10th place and returned to the same locale (he opted to keep its precise location a secret because it might come into play during the 2011 Classic out of New Orleans). He caught a similar bag that bumped him up to 4th, a little more than 4 1/2 pounds behind leader Smith.

He fished that area and the place where he'd caught the 5-pounder in practice on day 3 and weighed a strong 14-pound sack, headed by a 4 3/4-pounder. That allowed him to catch Smith, who came in with just three fish for 9-08.

"I was surprised when I tied him. I thought for sure I needed a couple more pounds."

Evers (center) and Mark Smith (left) were in a flat-footed tie after the final regulation day and had to settle the matter on the water the following day.

On the extra day, he had a 10-pound limit on the spinnerbait just 15 minutes after he made his first cast. Then he went to flipping in that area and his other main spot and made 4 pounds worth of culls.

"At that point I thought I had it won because it was the biggest stringer of the tournament. Then again, that was the only cloudy day we had, and I thought they could have bit in other places and (Smith) might've really caught them, too."

Winning Gear Notes

> Spinnerbait gear: 7' medium-heavy Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier rod, BPS Pro Qualifier casting reel (6.3:1 ratio), 20-pound BPS XPS fluorocarbon line, 1/4-ounce BPS Lazer Eye spinnerbait (white, chartreuse and blue with tandem silver and gold willow-leaf blades).

> Mat-punching gear: 7 1/2' BPS Pro Qualifier flipping stick, same reel, 65-pound Magibraid braided line, 1-ounce BPS XPS tungsten weight, 4/0 unnamed straight-shank hook, Yum Money Craw (black/blue or green-pumpkin).

> Flipping gear: 7' heavy-action BPS Pro Qualifier rod, same reel, 50-pound Magibraid, 3/16-ounce BPS XPS tungsten weight, 4/0 unnamed straight-shank hook, 3 3/4-inch Yum Craw Papi (black/blue shadow).

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – "That first area I went to (on day 1), I wasn't married to it. I wasn't going to die there. I gave it 1 hour out of my 3 hours of fishing time and then went to some other stuff."

> Performance edge – "Without a doubt it was my boat (Nitro Z9) and motor (Mercury 250 Pro XS). The boat holds 66 gallons of gas and I put the motor through Hades running through all that grass. I ran well over 900 miles in 4 days and I never had a problem. In no shape, form or fashion do I like running that far, but I knew it was the only chance I had to win."
