As the tours continue to visit many of the same venues year after year, there's typically a handful or pros who become the names to watch at individual stops.

On the FLW Tour, a lake like Beaver immediately brings to mind a Clark Wendlandt or Andy Morgan. BASS has its usual suspects, like Terry Scroggins in Florida, Rick Morris at any tidal venue, and so on.

BASS fishes Kentucky Lake in Tennessee once again this week and it'd be easy to think names like Gary Klein or John Murray – accomplished offshore fishermen – would immediately

pop out. And because Kentucky's such a storied venue, surely there are several names who've had repeated success there.

Not So.

A Look Back

Although BASS has staged several top-level events at Kentucky Lake, dating back all the way to the '70s, its tour hasn't visited the lake very much at all. And until recently, it hadn't visited during the post-spawn.

However, when BASS launched its Elite Series and stretched its schedule over summer, offshore fishing came back into vogue and BASS stopped at Kentucky twice.

The first Elite Series stop at Kentucky Lake came in mid-June 2006. Morizo Shimizu won that one when he mixed shallow and deep water and threw a worm and jig.

The other Kentucky Lake Elite stop was last year. Kevin VanDam won it out deep with a crank, jig and spoon.

For reference, here's a look at the final Top 20 from those two events.

The Repeaters

Note that only three anglers finished inside the Top 20 at both events. They are:

  • Kevin VanDam -- 3rd, 1st

  • Edwin Evers -- 8th, 12th

  • Kelly Jordon -- 11th, 15th

Kevin VanDam needs no backstory – the defending BASS Angler of the Year leads the Toyota Tundra points race once again. He'll be looking to put some additional cushion between him and points trailer Skeet Reese this week (5 points currently separates them). And of course, VanDam will be looking to repeat as winner.

Jordon's an interesting one to watch. Although it would be easy to peg him as a shallow, muddy, Texas guy, remember that Lake Fork's his home water, and there's nothing he likes better than deep-cranking the offshore structure there.

Most would pick Jordon to finish in the Top 10 in the points any year, but he's currently at 25th and needs to turn things around this week if he hopes to make the post-season.

Then there's Evers, who's in somewhat of a tailspin right now. He's at 43rd in the points, so he's not even within the Bassmaster Classic cutoff. Certainly, given his past success, he must be looking at Kentucky Lake as his make-or-break event of the year.
