Another winter, another Florida bed-fishing tournament. So goes the sport. But Bryan Hudgins' win at last week's Harris Chain Bassmaster Elite Series stands out.

The main reason it demands study is that Hudgins found a golden area that saw new fish as the event wore on, and while it's a well-known area, he had it pretty much to himself. The rest of the field ran by en route to further locations. Hudgins, meanwhile, burned only a quarter tank of gas all 3 days.

You can bet the spot will be ignored no more.

He weighed a respectable bag on day 1, blew the doors open on day 2 with 30-15, then closed with 14-09 on a day where the whole field struggled under cold-front conditions. His final total of 68-06 eclipsed 2nd-place finisher Scott Ashmore by a little more than 10 pounds.

Here's how Hudgins did it.

Practice

Hudgins, a Floridian who makes his home in Orange Park, began his practice with the intent to spread out beyond his historic Harris Chain areas. He knows the fishery well, and thus has traditional spots to fall back on should his explorations wither.

He spent a lot of time in Griffin, he said, and also practiced in Big and Little Harris and the Beauclair canals.

He had a later boat number, which he noted was his "saving grace." He'd found a concentration of fish in Hanes Creek that he would have started on with a better boat number. But given the late draw, on the last day of practice he went into Carlton and got six or seven bites flipping the pads and grass.

His plan was to start in Carlton, rather than make a long run and get stuck behind other boats, then hit the canals. However, he wasn't sure if the canals would be a go – he figured they'd be packed with boats.

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 22-14
> Day 2: 5, 30-15
> Day 3: 5, 14-09
> Total = 15, 68-06

Hudgins started in his pads and grass and caught an early 3 1/2 from the pads, but "knew the fish wouldn't bite in the grass until about noon," so he ran down to the Beauclair canals where he felt he could catch a limit.

"I couldn't believe it – there was nobody in there," he said. "There were so many boats in there in practice that the water was all muddy and you couldn't see the fish. But now that I had it all to myself, it was clean. And like what happened for everybody else in the event, the fish progressively kept coming to the bank. I saw new fish coming up and I was pretty excited after that."

About those canals, he noted: "It's a small little area, but it's good because it's so far out by itself. If you go, you have to commit a lot of time to it. It's kind of off the beaten path. I had the fish in the grass in Carlton, so it was like a one-two punch together. I went to the canals because I thought it was best to get them out of the way early."

He had "a lot of confidence" heading into day 2 because he saw several big fish pull in late the day before. He went directly to the canals this time and bypassed Carlton. The fish weren't locked on like the day before, but they were aggressive. So he opted out of sight-fishing and threw two baits – a Spro Aruku Shad Jr. lipless crank and a Warlock trick worm from Gitem Baits.

He estimated he caught 25 fish in the first 2 hours.

Important was that an algae bloom had started to cloud the water in the back of the canal, so the day before he'd mentally marked where the beds were.

"That paid off big-time," he said. "I remembered exactly where there were a couple fish on beds. I caught those within 2 minutes. One was a 6 and the other a 4 1/2."

He topped that off with a 7-pounder and had 31 pounds by noon. Again, he had the spot to himself the entire day.

"On day 3, I got there and Preston Clark followed me in," he noted. "He hadn't been there the whole week and that kind of had me fired up, but there was nothing I could do about it.

"A cold front came in that night and I was so excited when I got in there, but I saw that the fish were knocked back – they weren't still active and up shallow," Hudgins added.

He caught one good fish on the Aruku Shad Jr., then one more keeper. At 10:00 or 11:00 things warmed and the fish started to move up, but "the big fish didn't pull up until 1:00," he said.

He mustered a 14 1/2-pound limit and won easily.

Winning Gear Notes

> Lipless crank gear: 7' medium-action G. Loomis CBR rod, Abu Garcia Revo casting reel, 15-pound Trilene Big Game mono, 3/8-ounce Spro Aruku Shad Jr. (clear/chartreuse).

> Sight-fishing gear: 7'6" heavy-action G. Loomis GLX rod, Abu Garcia Revo casting reel, 15-pound Berkley Trilene 100% fluorocarbon, 5/0 Gamakatsu round-bend wide-gap hook, 1/4-ounce weight, Gitem craw (junebug/silver).

> Trick worm gear: 6'6" G. Loomis IMX rod, Abu Garcia Revo casting reel, 15-pound Trilene Big Game, 5/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook, Gitem Warlock (redbug).

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – "Having the place to myself really helped out. Boats would have muddied it up. And my fish management was real good in this tournament."

> Performance edge – "My sunglasses. I wore Costa Del Mar Fathoms with green 580 lenses. They're the best sunglasses ever made for sight-fishing."

Notable

> Hudgins wasn't able to gather sufficient sponsor support to fish the Bassmaster Elite Series again this year. After his win, he said he'd call BASS to see if he can still join the tour. He is fishing this month's Bassmaster Classic though. He qualified via his 29th place Elite Series points finish.
