Who’d have thought losing the plug to his boat in northeast New York would eventually lead David Fritts to the winning fish in eastern Georgia?

Indirectly, that’s how things went for the Lexington, N.C., pro at the Clarks Hill Eastern FLW Series last week.

After he lost the plug to his Ranger at the Lake Champlain Series event last month, a trip to a boat supply store in Elberton, Ga., during practice allowed him to check out the northwest portion of Clarks Hill. It didn’t take the crankbait guru long to discover that the fish were suspended and relating to submerged trees.

He went to work with the tools he knows and trusts – Rapala DT Series crankbaits, which he designed – and saw immediate results. Those results carried through the 4 days of the final regular-season FLW Series event of the year as he logged his first FLW-sanctioned win since 2001 by catching 59-10 to beat Thanh Le by more than 10 pounds.

“I’ve never won a Series before,” he said. “That was a big thing for me. I’ve won on the FLW Tour, BASS and just about everything else. … It’s just a great feeling. I used to take a lot of these things for granted a little bit. This reminds me of the old times and how it used to be.

“When the fish are like they are right now, there aren’t very many people that can catch them. I’m not trying to brag but when they get off the bottom and you’re in the middle of the lake you’re throwing to a post into a 6-inch-by-6-inch window, it can take you 30 minutes to make the right cast.”

It certainly took plenty of casts and an ample supply of patience, but he was up to the challenge.

Here’s how he did it.

Practice

There would’ve been plenty of pros in the field who would’ve gladly taken a 17-pound sack during the tournament. Fritts nailed that on the first day of his practice.

That was the indicator he needed to know he was on the right program. He threw the family of DTs at submerged pole timber, knowing the fish would be holding at different depths along the wood. It’s one of the applications he envisioned when designing the DTs.

“The DTs are made to run what they say they’ll run and I’ve fished them for so long and they’re so consistent that it was pretty much out of the box and into the water,” he said. “I’m pretty sure most of the wood was hardwood. There was one leaning tree that I know was a white oak.”

He came out of practice confident he could contend for the win.

“I really thought 13 to 14 pounds (a day) would’ve won, and it would’ve,” he said. “I thought I could catch 12 to 14.”

He focused his efforts in a 10- to 12-mile stretch above Murray Creek, about a 30-mile run from takeoff.

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 23-09
> Day 2: 5, 13-01
> Day 3: 5, 16-04
> Day 4: 5, 6-12
> Total = 20, 59-10

Fritts set the tone on day 1 with a 23-09 catch that was by far the biggest bag of the week and the only weight over 17 pounds.

“I caught most of my fish upriver on a brown/bone Dt-10,” he said. “It’s my absolute favorite color in the fall.”

He also threw the new Rapala Clackin' Rap and a fast-falling bait and lucked out on a couple bites as he landed two that didn’t even have hooks in their mouths.

“Day 1 was one of those dream days where everything went right,” he said. “I had one tree that was out of the water and I remember my partner mentioned to me how many casts I’d made to the same spot. I had close to 30 casts before that 5-pounder finally bit. It was one of those days where I knew the fish were there and a lot of times, if you can get one to bite, there’ll be others.”

On day 2, he continued to mix it up, catching a couple on the DT-10 before switching to the DT-16 and new DT-20, which is similar in size to the DT-16 but has a small piece of metal on the lip to help it dive deeper. He also varied his line diameters to ensure he achieved his target depths.

“Most of the trees had 20 feet of water on top of them,” he said. “That’s why I went with 8-pound line. In 10 to 12 feet of water, it falls fast but when you get down to 20 feet, the line slows it up, so I had to go to a lighter line.”

The constant casting, he said, takes a certain amount of patience, especially when bites don’t materialize right away.

“You have to have it to fish the way I was,” he said. “It takes a lot of know-how and a lot of little things to trigger a strike.”

He caught 13-01 on day 2 to maintain his lead.

On day 3, he fished new wood and put together his 16-04 limit with three bites on the DT-10 and one each on the DT-16 and DT-20. His Clackin’ Rap bite died off, he said.

On the final day, he went out with a 15 ½-pound lead and executed a safe gameplan to lock up the win.

“I just wanted to get a limit and get in,” he said. “I knew if I broke down someone could overcome 15 pounds. I threw the DT-20 and made 12 casts and had a limit. I was just looking for 5 to 7 pounds. I was hoping for a good bite but I never got into the real big timber.”

A renowned cranking specialist, Fritts worked over submerged timber and targeted suspended fish with a variety of Rapala DT plugs.

Winning Gear Notes

> Crankbait gear: 7’ medium-heavy or 7 1/2' medium American Rodsmiths David Fritts Cranking Series rod, Bass Pro Shops David Fritts Signature Series casting reel (4.7:1 ratio), 10-pound Sufix ProMix monofilament line, Rapala DT Series crankbaits (brown/bone or chartreuse/brown) or Rapala Clackin’ Rap (bone/chartreuse).

> Fritts swapped out the standard No. 4 treble hooks and put on No. 6 VMC Sure Sets.

> He fished DT-10s on 7-foot rods and the DT-14, DT-16 and DT-20s on the 7 1/2-foot rods so he could get extra distance on his casts.

> He had most of his reels spooled with the 10-pound ProMix but he also fished a DT-14 on 8-pound Sufix Tritanium Plus. Additionally, he threw the Clackin’ Rap on 20-pound Berkley Trilene XT before switching to 14-pound Berkley Trilene XL because he wanted a faster fall rate. “That helped that bait a lot,” he said. “With the bait being just under 3/4-ounce, when fishing deep, I wanted a faster fall.”

> He only had three DT-20 prototypes – one red, one brown and one blue – and he threw the blue because it more closely matched a shad pattern.

> The brown/bone and chartreuse/brown Rapala DT colors are exclusive to Bass Pro Shops.

> After burning through more than a dozen plugs on the first day of practice, he began to worry his inventory would wear thin. “I didn’t have that many with me,” he said. “I went to several stores but nobody had them and I started thinking, These fish have never seen a DT-10 because you can’t find any down there."

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – “Knowing the crankbait and knowing what it’s capable of doing and knowing the depths and what they run with each line size. You never hear about line size but when it comes to that type of fishing, line size can make a huge difference when the fish are really deep. I’ve seen it on Lake Eufala, where I went from 10-pound to 8 and caught a 30-pound bag where I wouldn’t have gotten a bite on 10. It’s something anglers need to pay attention to. It determines a lot of times how deep you can get.”

> Performance edge – “One thing I had to depend on was my Evinrude E-Tec and Ranger boat to get me there and back. But one piece that I always rely on – and there’s really no substitute for it – are the old Lowrance or Humminbord box-type flashers. I have a Lowrance 2530 on the bow and when I found these fish, I was able to pull up on them and catch them every day.”

Notable

> The win pushed Fritts into 24th place in the Eastern FLW Series points standings, which earned him a spot in the East-West Fish-Off next month at Lake Falcon in Zapata, Texas. He’ll fish against Cody Meyer, who finished 7th in the Western FLW Series points. “I’m looking forward to it,” Fritts said.
