In a typical largemouth tournament during summer and early fall, winners often start shallow to pick off an active early kicker, then move deep to fill their limit.

Not so in smallmouth tournaments – especially river smallmouth tournaments. Deep typically dominates those events.

But David Kromm of Kennewick, Wash. started shallow each day of the recent Columbia River Western FLW Series. He caught key skinny fish every day, which then gave him the freedom to work an upgrade program out deep.

He won the event by a major 4-02 margin and not only pocketed $100,000 for the win, but because he's a Triton owner, he also received a 20X3 from Triton under its Western Series contingency program.

It marked the first significant win of his career. Here's how he did it.

Practice

Kromm, a Tri-Cities resident, calls the Columbia River his home water. He's got literally hundreds of deep spots strewn along the Boardman and Tri-Cities pools, but left them alone during pre-practice. Instead, he searched out shallow areas that could produce a fish or two each morning.

He found a few and when official practice began, he checked them, searched out other shallow areas, and plied his traditional deep stuff too.

The water temperature during official practice was around 67 degrees.

"Once the sun got up, the shallow bite was over for me," he said. "Then I just spent a lot of time looking for deeper ledges and rockpiles with fish in the 15- to 25-foot range. The deep spots were pretty much along the main river channel.

"I have so many spots I couldn't fish them all in 3 weeks, so I knew the event would be about making the right decisions," he added. "I'd base those decisions on what I caught each morning and how the day progressed. If there were more fish on rockpiles, I'd stick with that."

He exited practice with a few milk-runs, but also the intent to fish some new water each day.

Days 1 & 2

> Day 1: 5, 14-01
> Day 2: 5, 14-04
> Total = 10, 28-05 (2nd)

Kromm started shallow on day 1 and caught four fish – two were quality, two were rats. He spent the rest of the day fishing deep.

"I ended up catching one more 3-pounder and a couple of 2s," he said of his deep effort. "Right now the river's in bad shape, so it's not easy to catch a lot of 2s or 2 1/2s. Those fish are pretty critical."

On day 2 he caught five up shallow in the morning – three were quality, two were rats.

"Then the alarm started going off on my motor," he noted. "I didn't want to lock below McNarry because of that. I figured I'd play it safe, and as the day progressed, I was really glad I did. The motor started going into guardian mode."

Kromm experienced motor problems on day 2 and was forced to head back early.

He was forced back to the launch area an hour and a half early. He spent the rest of that time out deep and caught a 3-pounder and a 2 1/4, which he used to cull out the two rats. He ended the day with 14-04 and sat in 2nd with 28-05 total.

Days 3 & 4

> Day 3: 5, 16-08
> Day 4: 5, 10-15
> Total = 20 (55-12)

On day 3, Kromm caught three quality fish shallow in the morning, then headed deep. He locked through and when he got below McNarry Dam, he saw the current was running and knew the bite would be on.

"Once I got a limit of decent ones, I started running around and fishing," he said. "I probably could have caught five decent limits that day – they were biting that well. And I kind of pre-fished here and there and took it easy. I was just hoping to get to the 4th day and that the wind didn't come up."

He ended the day in 1st with a 3-day total of 44-13.

When he started out on day 4, he thought the wind would be okay. But that sentiment soon changed.

"I started to head toward (McNarry). The wind was coming from a little different angle than it usually is when it blows hard. By the time I got to the Gorge, the water was as big as I'd ever seen it on the river. I tried to fish some but couldn't. I couldn't hold my boat position or anything, so I bagged it."

He headed into a backwater and caught a small largemouth. He felt he could catch a limit of largemouths there, but a youth duck hunt was underway, and he was uncomfortable disrupting that. So he exited the backwater and went to run some of his historic stuff.

He caught mostly small fish, but then went to a stretch that had produced for him in the past. He fished it thoroughly and caught a decent fish.

"Then I switched to a little finesse worm," he noted. "The fish weren't wanting to bite, but I fished that little, tiny finesse worm on a slack line. On the first cast I caught a 3 1/2, then I caught a 2-pounder. That's when I felt pretty comfortable."

Winning Pattern Notes

Kromm said all his shallow spots were close to deep water and had some grass. "The grass is disappearing at a faster rate now with the water getting colder, and the wind really rips it out, so it can be hard to find."

About his deep stuff, he said, "It was all adjacent to the river channel. When there was no current, you had to methodically probe those rockpiles. You had to fish them real slow. On the third day when there was current and they were biting, I only fished the leading (up-current) edge (of the structure), and I fished it fast."

One of Kromm's key baits was a 4-inch Zoom lizard in green-pumpkin.

Winning Gear Notes

> For his shallow fish, Kromm threw a spinnerbait, Rat-L-Trap, jerkbait and soft jerkbait. He noted he caught the most fish on a spinnerbait.

> Spinnerbait gear: 7'5" heavy-action G. Loomis BCFR GLX rod, Shimano Curado casting reel, 20-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon, 3/8-ounce homemade spinnerbait (gold willow and gold Colorado blades, white/chartreuse skirt, chartreuse Zoom Split-Tail trailer.

> For deep fish, he primarily threw a Carolina-rig and tube.

> Carolina-rig gear: 7'2" medium-action G. Loomis Bronzeback rod, Shimano Sedona spinning reel, 8-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon, 1/4-ounce weight, 30-inch lead, 2/0 Gamakatsu EWG hook, 4" Zoom Lizard (green-pumpkin).

> Tube gear: 7'1" heavy-action G. Loomis 854 rod, Shimano Curado casting reel, 3/8-ounce tube jighead, 4" Kickin' Baits tube (green-pumpkin).

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – "That I was willing to gamble a little and spend more time fishing shallow for a couple bites, rather than going out and worrying about getting my limit and catching numbers."

> Performance edge – "My electronics. My Lowrance graph showed me a lot, and that last day, I saw one of the decent fish I caught on the screen. In fact, I caught one every day that I saw for sure. I run an LMS 520 up front and an X26 in the back."

Notable

> Kromm's sponsored by: Triton, Mercury, Lowrance, MotorGuide, Nixon's Marine (Walla Walla, Wash.), Bass Kickin' Baits, Sniper Lures, All City Bail Bonds and Apollo Sheet Metal.

> He works as a project superintendent for Apollo Sheet Metal. "They're instrumental in allowing me to be able to do what I do," he said. "I couldn't work for anybody else and get away with what I do. I'm so grateful for them."

> About the 20X3 he won from Triton, he said: "Oh man, that's awesome. It's killer. That was a smart play by them to keep some of us in Tritons out here. It's very well appreciated."
