Weights lightened up across the board on day 2 at the FLW Tour event currently underway at the Detroit River. Several front-running pros who busted big bags yesterday saw their weights drop considerably on day 2, leaving the door open for an infusion of fresh blood into the Top 10 spots.

Local ace David McCrone was one of only a handful of pros who exhibited a mark of consistency today. He followed up his 21-06 limit of chunky Lake Erie smallmouths from day 1 with another five weighing 20-15 today.

North Carolinian Alvin Shaw matched McCrone's 20-15 limit. His 41-03 2-day total gave him the 2nd-place spot in the Top 10 cut.

Self proclaimed "river rat" Kim Stricker tallied a 19-13 total today to take the 3rd-place position. Behind him is big mover David Reault. Reault jumped into 4th place up from 24th on day 1 courtesy of a 20-12 day 2 limit of bronzebacks.

After tanking the heaviest limit of the tournament at 21-11 yesterday, day 1 leader Vic Vatalaro settled into the 5th-place spot when he brought a much easier to carry 16-15 sack to the stage today.

The rest of the Top 10 who'll fish tomorrow are as follows:

6. Michael Bennett -- 17-09, moved up two spots.
7. JT Kenney -- 19-13 today, moved up 35 spots.
8. Keith Monson -- 17-12 today, moved up four spots.
9. Mark Modrak -- 19-05 today, moved up 17 spots.
10. Keith Combs -- 18-11 today, moved up 10 spots.

Those who fell out of the cut today included: Tim McDonald (7th to 11th), Greg Vinson (5th to 37th), Terry Baksay (5th (tie) to 13th), Mike Hawkes (4th to 14th) and Bryan Coates (6th to 36th).

Forecasts prior to the tournament called for relatively calm conditions and winds below the 10-mph mark for all 4 tournament days, but those forecasts went out the window today as the wind crept up to 15 mph out of the west, making things tough on the brave souls who attempted to conquer Lake Erie.

Several waterlogged pros who tried their hand on the big pond told tales of long, bumpy boat rides at today's weigh-in. But the wind took its toll on more than just back muscles and boat hulls. A handful of anglers lamented that the spots they'd yanked respectable limits from on day 1 had been reduced to the clarity of chocolate milk by the westerly breeze.

On the opposite end of the specturm, the competitors who took it easy on the southern end of St. Clair used terms like "pancake" and "glassy" to describe the conditions on the smaller, more protected lake. But the small contingent of pros who ventured to the upper end of St. Clair - the most notable of which are Top 10 finishers Kim Stricker and Mark Modrak - had to contend with an uncomfortable set of conditions as well.

It looks like the Top 10 are in for more blustery conditions on Saturday and Sunday, and on top of that, thunderstorms are expected throughout much of the day tomorrow. All signs point to the safer St. Clair being the most likely choice to produce winning-caliber weights over the weekend. But the Erie die-hards, like cut leader McCrone, aren't known for being easily dissuaded.

All the weights reset to zero tomorrow, so who caught what during the first half can be forgotten. All that matters is what happens during the next 2 days.

McCrone Made it Happen in Erie

Minnesotan David McCrone is obviously right at home braving the bucking waves of Lake Erie. He didn't comment on exactly how far he's having to go to get his fish, but he did say it was "a long way" and that it took him over 2 1/2 hours just to make it back to the launch this afternoon.

"There was one stretch coming back where it was pretty rough," he said. "I had to slow down to about 15 mph. All total I probably only got to fish about 4 hours today. The rest of the time I was running."

He's walloped two stout limits from his spot the last 2 days, but running out of fish is the least of his worries.

"Getting down there is the hard part," he said. "If I can make it down with enough time to catch five fish, they're going to be good. It's basically just a matter of getting to it. It's probably going to be worse tomorrow than it was today."

He said he's not afraid to take a little spray and get jostled around if it means a healthy limit of fish, but he won't take an unnecessary risk if things get too nasty. "If it gets bad tomorrow I won't go. Our tournament time is too short."

He's splitting his time between two larger, primary areas that have "a bunch of little key spots in each area." He described his fish as being in a "weird phase," and noted he's been able to coax big bites in anywhere from 12 to 30 feet using a dropshot.

"I'm just hitting a bunch of different rock piles," he said. "You might hit a dozen different rock piles and then you pull up on one and they're stacked on it. I'm spending a little bit of time on the bigger rock piles, but you can make two casts on the small ones and you'll know right away if they're on it or not."

About whether or not he has a fallback plan in the event he can't reach his underwater oasis in Erie, he said: "Yeah, but it's not a very good one."

Alvin Shaw came into this event with the intentions of making the Forrest Wood Cup, but never expected to be competing for a win.

2nd: Shaw Sacked 'Em in St. Clair

North Carolina pro Alvin Shaw came into this event with his mind set on finishing high enough to make it through to the Forrest Wood Cup championship. He's got extra incentive to make the Cup this year: the venue is basically in his back yard at Lake Murray.

"I've never done well (at Detroit River events) in the past," he noted. "I was really just hoping to protect my standings and make the championship. That's what made me abandon Erie and focus on St. Clair. I felt pretty good that I'd be able to get a pretty good finish with the way my practice went, but I didn't think my spot was this good."

He's fishing a similar style to McCrone in that he's working specific key structures and isolated pieces of cover within a much larger area. "I'm not doing anything special. I'm just looking for something different in my area. It might be a little contour change, a patch of grass, a rock - if it holds bait, it's holding bass.

"One thing that confuses me about my spot is that the fish I catch are either non-keepers or they're toads," he added. "It's almost like a male-female relationship. I'd almost say they were spawning, but that just doesn't make sense. I think these fish are transitioning and they just happen to be moving out like that."

The traffic picked up in his area later this afternoon, but none of the guys he saw move through made the cut, so he thinks he'll have free reign of the area over the weekend.

"I think one of the keys to my success is the line I'm using," he noted. "I'm going as low as 4- and 6-pound test Gamma fluorocarbon."

3rd: Stricker Worked the River

Kim Stricker bucked the big-water trend and headed north to the St. Clair river where Lake Huron dumps into St. Clair. Up there he's able to do a little sight-fishing.

"Yesterday I was able to (sight fish) and put a couple of quick fish in the boat pretty early," he said. "But these fish are seeing more pressure than just me. If I can back off those fish tomorrow I think I can catch them again. It'll help not having three other boats on them."

But his bag of tricks doesn't end with the fish he can see. He made it very clear that he's got plenty of other stuff - some of which he hasn't even checked yet - and sounded very confident about his chances to maintain his pace throughout the weekend.

Kim Stricker passed on the lake bite and opted to spend his time in the St. Clair River instead.

"I pulled up on one of my other spots today and saw a bunch of smallmouths busting bait on the surface. I caught one about 4 pounds, another about 5 1/2 and one about 3. I've got some main-lake stuff I can work with, too. I've still got a couple aces up my sleeve."

He said the westerly wind pushing against the east-flowing river current "was really something." But he's more concerned about the thunderstorms in the forecast than the strong winds that are expected to accompany them tomorrow.

"I can deal with wind - my fish bite better in the wind," he said. "It helps a lot if I have sun, though. The sun came out in the afternoon today and my bite picked up a lot. But everything I fished was less than 6-feet deep today. If it gets cloudy I might just have to rely on my deeper stuff."

8th: Monson Moving Out

Keith Monson said he's working fish that are in their transition to their summertime haunts. In order to do that, he's having to move a little deeper with each passing day.

"Earlier in the week these fish were shallower," he said. "That's what tells me they're still in a transition. They're getting a little deeper every day, and I'm just trying to ease out there with them."

He's got one spot that seems to be producing better than the rest, and he had to hit that three times today to cull up to the 17-12 limit he eventually weighed in. But overall, he feels confident he can work the spot for a couple more limits in the upper-teens over the weekend.

"I don't think I beat those fish up too bad," he said. "What really clued me in to the kind of fish that are on this spot was in practice I hooked a 6-pound fish, and when it came up to the boat there were 5 or 6 the same size chasing it. So I know the big ones are in the area."

He noted he's working in the same vicinity as Top-10 finisher Michael Bennett, but said "it's a pretty big area, so I think we'll be alright."

His best producer so far has been a 4-inch green-pumpkin tube.

9th: Modrak Mixed it Up

Like Stricker, local pro Mark Modrak of Michigan is spending some time in the St. Clair River. But the river is his b-spot. He said he's milking a main-lake spot each day prior to running to the river.

"It's just a little sandy area mixed in with some grass. It's holding some good ones, too. It usually produces a little better this time of year, but when that dries up I'm running to the river system to concentrate on shallow current eddies."

He's working the eddies with a combination of jerkbaits, tubes and shallow dropshots. "It's only about 4-feet deep where I'm fishing," he noted. "I did a lot of trout fishing as a kid and that's what this reminds me of. It's basically the same deal as fishing for trout in the current."

Whereas most pros are paying a lot of attention to what phase their fish are in, Modrak said he doesn't have to worry about that, because "these fish just live there all the time. They spawn there. They spend their summer there. It really doesn't matter. They aren't going anywhere.

"I can see a lot of them," he added. "I'm kind of sight-fishing a little bit. There's been so much boat traffic over the top of them that they've been super skittish. Hopefully tomorrow I'll have an easier time of it."

Mark Modrak hopes less pressure on his river fish will make them easier to catch tomorrow.

36th: Coates Changed His Mind

Erie wizard Bryan Coates was a favorite pick by pros and pundits alike to show up big at this event. He lived up to that billing on day 1 with a hefty 21-09 limit that landed him in 2nd place after the first quarter, but day 2 was a different story.

Coates showed up at the scales today with only 11-13, but that's hardly the most surprising thing about his limit. The well-known smallmouth seeker's sack was full of green fish.

"All my friends got a big kick out of that," he said about his largemouth limit.

He made a 70-mile run across Lake Erie to find his fish on day 1, but when he saw the choppy conditions on the big pond this morning, he decided to forego that trek.

"I looked at my co-angler and said, 'Forget it. We're going to St. Clair.' At some point you have to have some good judgment. I've made that run so many times and it'll tear you up. I heard a rumor that there were four boats that tried to make that run and didn't make it. And I heard at least one guy got stranded out there.

"I ran up in St. Clair and went fishing for largies," he added. "I had one good smallmouth, but all the rest were largemouths. I think I've got enough to make a check, and I'm still here to tell about it, so I feel pretty good about my tournament."

He noted there's a BFL Michigan division tournament based out of Sandusky Bay coming up next weekend, and he plans to revisit his a-spot then.

"Those fish are right where I left them," he said. "I should have no problem getting to those fish next weekend. I'll get my revenge."

About where he thinks this event will be won - Erie or St. Clair - he said: "I think you'll see somebody from St. Clair win it this time. If the wind blows like it did today those guys on Erie are going to have a hard time. The wind isn't blowing that hard, but it's coming from the wrong direction (west). Erie is no fun with a west wind."
