Turns out today's Ft. Loudoun–Tellico FLW Tour in Knoxville, Tenn. wasn't all about ledge-fishing. Sure, there was a lot of it, but a lot of other stuff's working too. For evidence, look no further than the Top 3.

Leader Scott Martin went to work with a shallow crank, then moved deep

in the afternoon, and fished both Ft. Loudoun and Tellico en route to his opening-day 20-11 limit.

Right behind him is David Dudley, who fished a mix of deep and shallow for his 20-02 limit.

Then there's Andy Morgan, who steered clear of the crowded ledges and banks and fished mid-depths for a 19-07 limit.

And yes, those are stouter weights than most expected from this heavily pressured fishery. In fact, better than expected weights stretch considerably down the field.

Currently, Craig Powers with 17-10 occupies the 4th-place spot in the race to the Top-10 cut. He's fishing shallow and deep. And right behind him is Jerry Green with 17 pounds even.

The Top-10 cut sits at 15-05 – about a pound and a half heavier than pre-tournament predictions – and the 50th-place check pace is 10-13.

The fishing certainly benefited from the day of rest yesterday. Competitors were barred form the lake, which gave the fish a chance to rest up and temporarily forget about jigs and big worms. But expectations do point to a weight-drop tomorrow, as usually happens on day 2 of an event.

Another factor: The lake's crowded. Several boats raced to the best spots this morning, and since the boat order's reversed tomorrow, many don't know if they'll be able to fish their best stuff on day 2.

Below is a look at the current Top 20. The field cuts to the Top 10 tomorrow. For the 11th- through 20th-place pros, distance behind the cut is noted in red.

1. Scott Martin: 20-11
2. David Dudley: 20-02
3. Andy Morgan: 19-07
4. Craig Powers: 17-10
5. Jerry Green: 17-00
6. Brandon Coulter: 16-07
7. Norman Seat: 16-06
8. Mark Rose: 16-03
9. Koby Kreiger: 15-05
9. Andy Montgomery: 15-05
11. Greg Bohannan: 15-01 (0-04)
11. Scott Suggs: 15-01 (0-04)
13. Jeremiah Kindy: 14-14 (0-06)
14. John Devere: 14-10 (0-10)
14. Wesley Strader: 14-10 (0-10)
16. Ramie Colson, Jr.: 14-03 (1-01)
17. Jim Moynagh: 14-01 (1-03)
18. Nate Wellman: 13-11 (1-09)
19. Art Ferguson III: 13-10 (1-10)
20. Matt Herren: 13-06 (1-14)
20. Roger O'Dell: 13-06 (1-14)

The preponderance of ties illustrates just how close the weights are. And it should be that way again tomorrow. A lot of cookie-cutter 3-pounders are coming to the scales, with the occasional 5-plus-pounder mixed in.

Some pros got healthy in a hurry with big bites, while other sacks were of a more standard build.

The biggest question right now is whether the shallow or the deep bite will turn out to be stronger. Or will the mid-depth bite prevail? It did here last year, when Mark Davis steered clear of the spawning crowds and wakebaited on main-lake points.

Current reportedly didn't move much today, which does prove the fishing can he red-hot even without moving water.

Martin Happy For Turnaround

So far, Martin's year has been forgettable. He's 103rd in the FLW Tour points, and he's dropped more than 80 spots in the World Rankings since the start of the season.

"This feels great," he said. "I'll tell you, it's been a long time coming. I've had a rough year so far. I've had a couple of decent tournaments, but a couple of really bad ones. So it feels tremendous to be on top. I put a lot of work in on this one, and I'm proud to be leading it."

He didn't pre-practice, he said, but he spent 14 hours on the water each practice day during official practice. "That's an easy thing to do at a place like Champlain or Detroit, but on this pond, where they're few and far between, it's pretty miserable."

He spent his morning cranking the Loudoun shallows with a Spro Little John, then waited for the current to roll at least a little bit and went deep. He didn't get a lot of bites, he noted, but caught quality at both depths.

Andy Morgan planted several brushpiles before cutoff, which he thinks might produce a 2-pounder or two in a pinch.

He also caught a couple of big smallmouths, and ended the day on Tellico.

About tomorrow, he said: "I'm definitely not trying to waste anything – this isn't Kentucky Lake. You can't waste opportunities here. I'm going to catch what I feel safe with. I haven't done a lot of thinking on it yet, but I imagine 10 pounds for me is safe as far as tomorrow.

"I don't see the (cut weight) going up. I see it coming down pretty hard. We had that day off, to give the lake a rest. I think that's the key to everyone's success. This lake is actually fishing very tough."

2nd: Dudley Mum

It's BassFan's policy not to pursue pattern and location details until the conclusion of the tournament, but Dudley was quiet about a whole lot more than that. He declined to mention when he caught his fish, how many spots he's got, and other such nuggets.

One thing he did say is: "It's crowded. I hate these 200-boat fields."

About his 20-pound catch, he noted: "It's hard to say. Of course I feel good, but when you're dealing with ledge-fishing, and people see you catch them on holes, when you go back, you don't know if anybody will be on them. I caught some shallow and some deep today. I've got mixed feelings.

"I can't say much – I'll end up giving something away."

His bag included a pair of 5-09 largemouths he caught off different spots, and he did weigh some shallow fish.

Also notable is he doesn't "pay attention to current" because "if you have the right lure and you're doing the right deal, you can still make them bite."

About whether he'll even touch his best stuff tomorrow, he said: "It depends. That's something I'll just have to play by ear. If I start on something tomorrow, and catch a few that I think would keep me in there, then I'll go practicing like I did today. And of course, if I'm not catching anything, I'll hammer everything I've got to try to make it."

3rd: Mid-Morgan Had Great Day

Morgan lives an hour and a half from the lake, but his roots here run deep. He fished the system a ton back in his Red-Man/BFL days, and mostly during the summer.

A few things stand out about what he's got. One, he's fishing the mid-depths in order to avoid the crowds. Two, he hasn't touched a few spots he hopes to hold for Saturday. Three, he planted several brushpiles here before the off-limits that he thinks might bail him out if he needs a 2-pounder or two.

David Dudley isn't sure whether he'll be the first one to his best stuff tomorrow.

"I had a heck of a good day – a picture-perfect day," he said. "I caught all my hookups, and the ones that bit were the right ones. I didn't catch a whole lot of fish, but the ones that bit were the ones you wanted to catch. It really couldn't have went much better.

"I really didn't know what I had, because I didn't jerk on any fish in practice if I got bit on plastic," he added. "And actually, I dodged a bunch of areas that I didn't want to fish until the tournament. My plan was to go fish stuff in the tournament I knew was going to be good this time of year, and not practice on it."

About his overall strategy, he said: "In the big picture, all I did was junk-fish. It was a lot of running: Make one stop and four or five casts, then get up and go to the next one. Everybody was really keyed on 20 feet, and going down the bank. I felt if I could fish in-between, I'd have a big advantage."

4th: Powers Working Strength

Like Morgan, Tennessee pro Craig Powers from knows this chain well. But unlike Morgan, Powers fished shallow and deep today. He went shallow because he's widely regarded as the most accurate caster in the sport, so he's fishing stuff others can't reach – way beneath undercut banks and root wads.

It might seem surprising that he started deep and then fished shallow in the afternoon. That's opposite of the typical approach. But the fish generally get tighter to cover as the sun gets higher, so that's when his accuracy advantage plays heaviest in shallow water. And he weighed fish from both depths.

"I feel pretty good," he said. "I really thought I had a little more weight than I did. But I feel good about the way I caught them, and I caught them better than I thought I was going to.

"I think the weights will drop off tomorrow. I still think 28 and change will make the cut. So if I can catch 12 or 13 pounds tomorrow, I'll be tickled to death."

He's holding onto one deep spot he hasn't touched yet, and he's got some shallow fish as an extra down-card.

"I really believe if I could get those deep fish out of my head and just fish shallow, and catch what bites, I think I could catch a bigger bag shallow," he noted. "I've got two ways of fishing, and they're like night and day. The only reason I have to go deep is there's a lot of fish there, and you don't have to move around. There's the potential for a five-cast hole.

"There's probably not going to be a single person in this tournament fishing shallow the second half of the day," he added. "I only fished shallow for 2 hours, and precision casting's the whole deal."

Craig Powers fished an opposite schedule – he started deep, then ended shallow.

He didn't catch any big fish. Instead his bag was a quintet of 3 1/2-pounders.

About whether he thinks this is a tournament he can win, he said: "Realistically, a lot of things would have to happen pretty good for me to win. This thing is going to fish so different this weekend based on boat traffic. But at the same time, if I can get lucky enough to make the cut, then anything can happen on the weekend."

11th: Suggs Has Two

Arkansas pro Scott Suggs caught 15-01 today, which ties him for 11th, and was straight-up about what'll make or break him tomorrow.

"If people would stay out of my way, I'd feel real good about tomorrow," he said. "This thing is fishing so crowded. There's only certain little ledges they're on, and I only fished two ledges today.

"I know I won't get on one of them tomorrow," he added. "Me and (14th-place) Wesley Strader were racing to one this morning. I beat him to it, and me and my partner caught 23 pounds on it. (Strader) didn't catch anything. Then we went to another place and I culled everything out."

His last fish on that second spot was over 4 pounds, and he decided to stop fishing at that point, which was about 11:30. That's a decision that's already haunting him. He lost four on the second spot, and had 15 or 16 bites.

"To tell you the truth, I didn't think they were going to catch them like this," he said. "I thought 15 pounds would have been 5th, 6th, 7th – right in there. So I just backed off.

"That might bite me in the end. If the school's not up on either place tomorrow, or someone gets to it, I'm screwed. That's about the only way I can put it."

14th: Strader Cranking

Yesterday, Tennessee pro Wesley Strader told BassFans that his practice was "not good." But he got on some good fish today and sacked a 14-10 limit.

"I wasn't sandbagging – it could have went either way today," he said. "I feel good about it, but it could have been a little better – I lost a couple.

"I caught all mine cranking," he added. "It's no secret – just cranking a plug deep."

He noted he had up to 25 spectator boats around him, along with a few fishermen.

About tomorrow, he said: "I didn't get to five or six of my places. They didn't run water, so there was no need in going there. (The weights) will fall off tomorrow a little bit, so I'm looking forward to it. It might not go my way, but I'm ready to go fishing."

22nd: Defoe Fishing Deep

Knoxville resident Ott Defoe is one of several anglers in the cut-hunt. He sits at 22nd right now with 13-05, which is 2 pounds off the pace.

He knows the lake well and fishes several wildcats here each week of the summer.

"I like being where I'm at," he said. "Yeah, I'd like to be sitting in the Top 10 with a nice comfortable cushion, but I don't mind being where I'm at. They bit really well today, but I can't see it doubling as far as the weights are concerned.

"If I have a good day tomorrow, it'll be very easy to get back in there. I just have to go out and get a few better-quality bites. I had a solid bag of fish today, so if I can get the same kind of quality, and a big bite or two, I could be right there."

He caught his fish deep today. He does have some shallow fish, but they're way up the river. He feels the fishing's better in the morning, and doesn't want to waste that, so he thinks he'll stick with his deep stuff tomorrow.

191st: Sappington Blanked

John Sappington was one of 10 pros who bageled today.

"I just blanked – I didn't catch them," he said. "I was in-between everything. I got to start on a close area I wanted to start on, and just didn't get any bites.

"Then I ran to some other ledges and they were all covered up. I just scrambled around and didn't put anything together."

Notable

> Day 1 stats – 200 anglers, 98 limits, 23 fours, 24 threes, 29 twos, 16 ones, 10 zeroes.
