Man, oh man is the fishing on at Alabama's Lake Wheeler. In fact, the lake looks like it's on the path toward its prior glory, when it was better than its heralded neighbor Guntersville.

Only one pro failed to catch a limit, seven caught sacks better than 18 pounds, and the Top 12 mark sits at 16-11.

Sure, Wheeler's schizophrenic – the dam gates could shut and the field could limp in with an 8-pound average tomorrow. But that's a big "if," and for 1 day at least, the fishing was through the roof.

Terry Scroggins worked through about 70 fish today to cull up to his day-1 best limit of 22-03 and leads by a 1-10 margin.

Closest to him is Todd Faircloth with 20-09. Faircloth entered the event at 2nd in the BASS Angler of the Year (AOY) race. AOY leader Mike McClelland settled into 40th today with 12-05, so if Faircloth can hold position tomorrow, he could move back into the AOY lead.

Faircloth battled it out on the Decatur Flats today, where better than half the field is fishing.

Dave Wolak, in 3rd, caught 19-04 today, and right behind him is Kota Kiriyama, who fished away from the crowds and caught 19-00. Kevin VanDam rounds out the Top 5 with 18-08.

Here's a look at the current Top 12. Total weight is followed by distance from leader in red.

1. Terry Scroggins: 5, 22-03
2. Todd Faircloth: 5, 20-09 (1-10)
3. Dave Wolak: 5, 19-04 (2-15)
4. Kotaro Kiriyama: 5, 19-00 (3-03)
5. Kevin VanDam: 5, 18-08 (3-11)
6. Shaw Grigsby: 5, 18-07 (3-12)
7. Mark Menendez: 5, 18-01 (4-02)
8. Timmy Horton: 5, 17-06 (4-13)
9. Morizo Shimizu: 5, 17-03 (5-00)
10. Jeremy Starks: 5, 17-00 (5-03)
11. Matt Reed: 5, 16-12 (5-07)
12. John Murray: 5, 16-11(5-08)

The Decatur Flats – by far the most popular spot at Wheeler – was indeed packed today, as noted. There, anglers largely played the numbers game. They caught wads of fish, and every once in a while happened onto a good one.

Still other flitted in and out of the flats to hit key spots without attracting much attention.

Others inside the Top 12 left the Flats alone and did their own thing – some went shallow, some went deep. All of which sets up a fascinating tournament dynamic.

The Flats are stacked with fish, but they were hit hard today, will be hit hard again tomorrow, and you can bet they'll get hammered by local angler and tournament traffic this weekend.

And some pros noted the fish seem to be moving off the flats. They hope others move in behind them, but that subtlety could lend an edge to anglers fishing the ledges. They might be fishing where the fish are going to, a situation widely regarded as the strongest 4-day pattern in fishing.

Throw weather into the mix too, because the water's predicted to slick off this weekend under bright, sunny skies and sweltering heat.

Put it all together and weights could easily head south in a hurry on Saturday.

Scroggins Stoked

"Big Show" Scroggins earned his nickname for his ability to pull giant sacks seemingly out of the air. Nobody expected a 22-pound sack to cross the stage today, and especially not from Scoggins, because this venue has never been his strength.

"I always struggle at Lake Wheeler," he said. "I can always get bit here, but their nose is always closer to their tail. That was the case with my practice. I got a lot of bites the first day (of practice), but they were all small. And I don't think I caught a fish over 2 pounds in practice.

"So I was going out this morning with the mindset to catch as many as I could. I caught 60 or 70 fish today, and about every 14th or 15th fish I'd catch a good one. It was lots of numbers, then every once in a while I'd get a good-quality bite."

Todd Faircloth's fishing Decatur Flats with the crowd, but had one key spot to himself.

He noted he thinks the fish "are starting to move out, and maybe more will be coming." Whatever happens, he's having a blast catching so many fish. "You don't go 3 or 4 minutes without a bite."

About where and how he fished, he said: "I'm not doing anything different than anybody else. I just got lucky and got a few key bites. It's just who gets lucky.

"I was pretty much on my own," he added. "I was sharing a spot with one other boat, but I had pretty much everything to myself that I wanted to fish."

2nd: Faircloth Hit Flats

Like a lot of the pros, Faircloth wasn't quite sure what he was on, because he'd get a few bites on a practice spot and leave right away. He felt 13 to 15 pounds would be a killer day, but he surpassed that with a 20-09 limit.

He's fishing Decatur Flats.

"I'm having to weed through a lot of little fish to catch what I caught," he said. "I didn't have a nice stringer right off the bat. I caught five nice fish today, but it was an all-day deal. I did catch a good one early, but it kind of settled down after that and I culled here and there all day."

He'll fish the same way in the same spots tomorrow – that's all he's got, he said.

"I feel good about what happened today. The potential's out there. It's just a matter of weeding through them and getting some good bites. I was just fortunate to get some of that today. There's a ton of fish in this lake. It gets a lot of pressure, but it's a real fertile fishery. And I enjoy coming here – I like fishing offshore, and fishing the grass. It's a neat place."

4th: Kiriyama Played Some Defense

Kiriyama would have moved around today after he culled up to 19-00, but he couldn't. Two other boats were waiting to get on his spot, he said, so he camped on top of it all day.

About his day, he said:" "My goodness, I spanked them – I caught them good."

He added that his practice was difficult. He didn't have a lot of bites, and the ones he got were generally small. "But I knew that bigger fish hold in certain areas where I had the bites, and that's why I went back there. That was my second stop, (and) the first fish I caught (there) was a 4 1/2-pounder. I said, 'Well, I'll stay here and try to catch more.'"

In all, he caught 17 pounds off that single spot, but it took a while.

Dave Wolak caught the day's big bass – this 7-10 toad.

About the other boats in the area, he said: "They wanted to come into my spot, so I hope I have my spot tomorrow. I kind of defended. It's an open-water deal, and there's nothing there that you can really say, 'Hey, don't come over there, or get too close.' So I stayed there all day."

He noted the area's shallow, and he's fishing a prototype Jackall lure.

5th: VanDam's 'sexy' stuff

Shaw Grigsby, in 6th, noted he's fishing a prototype Strike King bait, and the fish were inhaling it.

Bassfan asked VanDam, who's also a Strike King pro, whether he and Grigsby were fishing the same thing.

"I saw Shaw, we fished right by each other a little," VanDam said. "I know what he's throwing, and I'm throwing some of the same thing too. There's a lot of sexy stuff happening out there – I can tell you that."

Sexy shad is VanDam's custom color for Strike King, and he won with a sexy shad crankbait at adjacent Guntersville last year. The prototype could be the new slate of lake- and region-specific colors VanDam and the company plans to roll out.

About whether he was surprised by his 18-08, or the other weights today, VanDam said: "No, this is a good lake, and these guys are the best there is. I knew some guys were going to catch some big stringers.

"I just wasn't sure who'd find the places that I'd found too. I felt like if I could fish a couple of spots and nobody else found them, I could catch a real good sack. I didn't have a lot going on. I hit one place today and caught them pretty good. Hopefully nobody else is fishing it tomorrow."

Also notable was he practiced for about half the day, and culled twice doing it. Plus, he left a lot of his practice stuff alone.

"I really pretty much looked for new water today. I found a couple of new places. Sometimes you have a good day, and I knew it was going to be a good day because the Wings won the Stanley Cup last night. That's pretty huge. That's a big deal to hockey fans where I'm from (Kalamazoo, Mich.) And I have a friend (Pat Verbeek) that works and played for the organization."

8th: Horton Pleased

Tim Horton's on his home water – he's a Wheeler stud – so his presence inside the Top 12 isn't a big surprise. The good day 1 couldn't have come at a better time, either. He's about 20 spots out of a Bassmaster Classic berth right now, and needs to climb big-time to make it to the show.

"I was pleased," he said of his day. "And I was really surprised to see the weights as good as they were. It's good to see Wheeler back healthy again. I was impressed with the weights, and I hope to go out and do it again tomorrow.

Kota Kiryama caught his fish from a single spot, and he said he defended it all day.

"I still think 16 or 17 a day is going to end up winning it," he added. "I'm really excited about it."

When asked whether he foresees a weight drop this weekend, he said: "Yeah. On these north-Alabama lakes, a lot of people fish here, and there'll be a lot of people out fishing, but that's just part of it.

"These fish move around a lot, both deep and shallow, and you almost have to move with them every day. It's not always just pulling up and fishing one big spot. I think they key is getting in areas where you can catch 4-pounders. It's tempting to do the numbers game, but you have to get away from there to catch the better ones. It's a little bit of a risky thing."

He noted too that he fished around some boats today, but it's wasn't too bad. And he did hit one backup spot that he wanted to save. He caught a 4 1/2-pounder there. He also caught two big ones there in practice, so it could be a money spot.

12th: Murray's Ledge Was Loaded

John Murray, a BassFan Big Stick, told readers yesterday that he'd caught one fish over 4 pounds the first 2 days of practice. It was on a ledge, and he'd actually caught that 4-pounder and another keeper on back-to-back casts. He went back to that ledge today and it was game-on.

It wasn't his first stop, though. He began the morning by "messing around" with a few places, and when he arrived at the ledge, it was on fire. He and his partner Tommy Swindle (Gerald Swindle's father) caught 35 fish, and they each bagged a 5-pounder.

After their size dwindled, Murray decided to lay off and leave them for tomorrow.

"I didn't feel it was smart to go through them all today," he said. "So I just went and hit everything else I'd prefished for the rest of the day. I stayed off that spot. Obviously, tomorrow I'll hit it for all it's worth. I want to make the Top 50. In case they don't run water on Saturday, I want to catch all the fish I can today.

"The current was just one generator on each dam this morning until 11:00 – it wasn't running hard," he added. "They didn't turn on two until about 11:30. And I don't know if they're going to have them running on Saturday."

He never had another boat around him today, he said, although after he left his ledge, he did see a few boats on it later.

Below are some highlights from today's weigh-in.

  • 6th, Shaw Grigsby (18-07): "It was pretty awesome. I'm using a prototype bait from Strike King, but this day isn't really about me. I'd like to make a quick statement. On Saturday, we lost a really special person – my father in law, my wife's dad. He's a retired Major from the Air Force. I can tell you that without the men and women in the military, we wouldn't be able to do what we're doing today. I just want to shout out to all of them: Thank you for what you've done. I'm fishing in that crowd, but I've got a great bait. I've got a bait they're literally just choking themselves on, which is pretty neat. I'm having to mix it up and move around. I'm in that mass of people, but I had a really blessed day today."

  • 10th, Jeremy Starks (17-00): "I found a little deal that's a little different than what everybody else is fishing. I caught those fish in 15 or 20 casts and didn't throw back. I kind of saved them and I hope there's a lot more of those in there tomorrow."

  • 17th, Peter Thliveros (15-05): "I landed on the right spot at the right time. It was a timing issue the whole way around. You just run from place to place and then pull up and catch fish – just instantaneously. It seems like the best fish bite first, then you catch small ones, and then they quit and you have to move on."

  • 29th, Dustin Wilks (13-14): "It was a surprise, catching these fish. I had a really tough practice, and late in the last day, in the last hour – it seems like it always comes down to that for me – I found a couple little spots and the rest
    is history."

  • 27th, Boyd Duckett (12-12): "There's a lot of fish out there. You just have to find a way to target a little bigger fish. I hoped to have a little more weight. Maybe we'll pick it up a notch tomorrow and get in the hunt."

  • 40th, Mike McClelland (12-05): "I'm not going to say I'm grinding for a win, but I'm definitely out there fishing to put myself in contention to win. I'm fishing a lot deeper than most of these guys. That's the way I like to catch them. So I went looking for a little bit clearer water, and found some a little deeper – I just couldn't get any good ones to bite today."

  • 50th, Dean Rojas (11-12): "I'm just trying to catch a nice limit every day and stay close to the leaders. It's tough (with) these guys catching 16-pound bags. I need to change and try something different to catch a big sack."

  • 67th, Steve Kennedy (9-12): "I've never cashed a check here, but I had a blast today. I caught a ton of fish. I (just) didn't get the right bites. My partner did though."

  • 76th, Clark Reehm (9-01): "What I was keying on this morning didn't work out. I just went junk-fishing after that."

  • 82nd, Brian Snowden (8-12): "I got a young kid just getting ready to graduate high school (as my co-angler). I had a 4 1/2-pounder right at the boat, it throws the bait, (and) it sticks in my ear. My wife was asking him what he wants to be. I think he needs to be a surgeon. He got down there and pushed it through, cut it off, and I never felt a thing."

  • 82nd, Denny Brauer (8-12): "Part of the key to this place (is), if you can get on one of the key areas, there are lots of fish bunched up. But the key is getting on that key area."

  • 86th, Mark Davis (8-07): "Everyone knows those fish are out there. I'm just hardheaded enough, I'll just go and try to make something work somewhere else. I had a good practice. It's just not happening where I'm at and (with) what I'm doing."

    Notable

    > Day 1 stats – 107 anglers, 106 limits, 1 two.

    > Horton noted that the current was fairly light this afternoon, but it picked up in the evening. "I heard Paducah's flooded out. That's the reason we're not getting the flow we normally would."
