Deep water or shallow – who cares? Texas or California – what's the difference? It looks like this Derek Remitz kid can catch a big bag anywhere, anytime.

The rampaging rookie who grew up in Minnesota and now resides in Alabama could be headed for his second Bassmaster Elite Series win in as many starts. He caught a 27-09 stringer at the California Delta today and leads with a 2-day total of 50-14.

He has a 3-ounce advantage over fellow Alabama immigrant Aaron Martens, who's won events all over his native California, but never once has taken home a trophy from the Delta. He caught a tournament-best 30-10 today (a sack that included an 11-10 giant) and is 2nd with 50-11.

California's Jared Lintner scrambled around to catch 21-00 for the 2nd straight day and is 3rd with 42-00. Day-1 leader Mark Tyler, an Oklahoman by way of California, caught 16-09 today and dropped to 4th with a 40-08 total.

Virginia's Rick Morris moved up from 8th to 5th with 19-07 today for a 39-08 total.

Here's a look at the current Top 12 (total weight is followed by distance from leader in red):

1. Derek Remitz: 50-14
2. Aaron Martens: 50-11 (0-03)
3. Jared Lintner: 42-00 (8-14)
4. Mark Tyler: 40-08 (10-06)
5. Rick Morris: 39-08 (11-06)
6. James Charlesworth: 38-1 (12-13)
7. Brent Chapman: 38-09 (12-05)
8. James Niggemeyer: 38-08 (12-06)
9. Kevin VanDam: 38-00 (12-14)
10. Stephen Browning: 37-05 (13-09)
11. Tommy Biffle: 36-12 (14-02)
12. Jeff Reynolds: 36-05 (14-09)

Weights went up a bit today as the Delta continued to stabilize after the wind-beating it absorbed on Wednesday. It was the second straight day of clear skies and no wind, and more big females undoubtedly moved onto the spawning beds.

That bodes well for the skilled sight-fishermen who survived today's cut to the Top 50, but remember this: Low tide won't arrive until almost an hour later tomorrow than it did today, and it'll be an hour later than that on Sunday. There just won't be a lot of time to look over the weekend.

A bag that contained 8-, 7- and 6-pounders pushed Remitz to the top of the leaderboard.

The 25-pound sacks that are fairly commonplace on the Delta at this time of year started to show up, as Martens, Remitz and Texans James Niggemeyer (25-14) and Ben Matsubu (25-04) all exceeded that standard.

In addition to Niggemeyer and Matsubu, others who improved their lot today with bags over 20 pounds were Kevin Van Dam (22-04 to move up to 9th), Alton Jones (22-00, now 13th), Morizo Shimizu (22-00, now 17th), Fred Roumbanis (20-03, now 18th) and Mike McClelland (21-07, now 20th).

Remitz's momentum shows no sign of abating, but Martens, who's running a pattern he's keeping under wraps, should loom large this weekend.

"I just keep finding new water, and when I catch a good one, it seems that a lot of times I can turn around and catch another one," Remitz said. "The sun doesn't help what I'm doing – it didn't seem to hurt today, but it'd be better if it was cloudy and windy."

He might get some of what he wants tomorrow. The forecast is for partly cloudy skies, a high temperature of 74 degrees and wind out of the southwest to 13 mph.

The field will be reduced to 12 after tomorrow's weigh in. The winner will be the angler with the highest combined 4-day weight after Sunday's final round.

Remitz Stays on Even Keel

Some anglers wouldn't be able to handle the success Remitz has had so early in his pro career. He apparently has no problem keeping things in perspective.

"Everything's just going right," he said. "I couldn't have picked a better time to start fishing good. Everything's just really working out."

He continued to methodically work grassy areas on the flats today. His sack included a fish that was just over 8 pounds, one that was close to 7 and another that was about 6.

He thinks there are more fish to be caught in those places, and he also found some new ones.

"I think (those areas) are going to keep reloading. It just depends on how much pressure they get and how much pressure I put on them. There were quite a few more boats today where I started, which is pretty typical. Where I found the new stuff, there weren't too many guys around.

"I found three or four new places today and I'll try to find at least one more tomorrow."

Is there another 25-plus bag coming on day 3?

"It's very possible, but I'd be pleased with anything around 20."

Aaron Martens' 30-pound bag was topped by an 11-02 brute.

2nd: Martens Seeks Revenge

Martens' tournament-best bag was headed by a tournament-best fish that weighed 11-02. He wouldn't divulge anything about how he caught them, but he spoke openly about what it would mean to him to notch a victory here.

"It'd be insane to win one on a place I used to hate," he said. "I know how to fish it now because of going back east. This place doesn't intimidate me anymore."

He caught the monster at about 10:00, and then a 9 1/2-pounder at 1:30.

"It's just a matter of making the right decisions and the right moves. I ran south later today and caught that second big one, and I almost didn't go.

"The biggest thought I have in my head, I haven't acted on it yet. I have a place where I smoked them in practice, but I think it's probably still muddy from the wind (on Wednesday)."

He said he's been catching 30 to 40 keepers a day – most in the 2 1/2- to 3-pound range.

"I've caught a lot of fish, but I've been fortunate too. Those big ones aren't easy to come by."

Jared Lintner is scrambling, but he's caught a 21-pound bag each day.

3rd: Lintner Rolls Along

California's Jared Lintner did pretty much the same things as on day 1 and weighed his second straight 21-00 sack.

"I'm pretty much just scrambling all over this place," he said. "I fished basically three areas, but a lot of different places within those areas.

"I'm going from tule clump to tule clump and grassbed to grassbed, just fishing whatever's in front of me and whatever looks good at that time."

He's encountered a decent reaction-bait bite in the morning. When that dies out, he's switching to a slower presentation for the rest of the day.

He hasn't gotten a huge bite either day – his biggest fish on day 2 weighed 5-04.

"I know the potential's there in my areas, but I haven't figured how to catch the big ones. In practice, I found a (5-pounder) and a 12 on a bed. They're not there now, but I went back today and saw some giants cruising around.

"If they lock up on something, it could get ugly."

He culled four times today. "I'm not getting a ton of bites, and that's what worries me. They're random – it's hit and miss."

He figures he'll need at least 18 pounds tomorrow to grab a spot in the Top 12.

"I'll make my same run and if they bite, they bite. There's definitely the potential for huge bags in those areas. I'll just grind it out and take what comes."

5th: Morris Applies Knowledge

Morris, whose home water is the Potomac River, has plenty of experience on tidal fisheries. He's putting it to good use here.

"I'm power-fishing," he said. "I'm pitching a little bit, but most of the time I'm throwing a (Rad Lures) Chatterbait or a War Eagle spinnerbait, and sometimes I'm going with a giant Chatterbait. It's like a 3/4-ouncer that was made for musky fishing, and I'm getting most of my big ones on that."

He caught about 10 keepers today, and the biggest was a 7 1/2-pounder.

"I had a slow practice, but I'm going for it now. I'm avoiding crowds and moving around a lot, just burning up my trolling motor. There's a lot of water here to fish."

He said he could move further up the leaderboard tomorrow, or he could be headed for a big fall.

"I'm going to cover a lot of new stuff and throw big baits, especially that giant Chatterbait. I'm going to swing for the fences because I know I need another 20 pounds to stay in this thing."

9th: VanDam Moves Up

Kevin VanDam lost about 90 minutes of fishing time this morning when he tore a hole in the bottom of his boat while running to his first spot. He ripped some holes in fish's lips after he got a replacement boat delivered by BASS tournament director Trip Weldon – his 22-04 sack moved him up 21 places.

"That bad wind on the last practice day ripped up tules and stuff like that, and the tide keeps them around," he said. "I was running down one of the canals and I hit something pretty hard.

"It didn't really phase me at first, but when I shut down 30 miles later, I was taking on water. It had peeled off some of the bottom of the boat.

"I called Trip immediately," he added, "and it didn't take him more than an hour (to deliver the other boat). I was fortunate that there was a ramp fairly close."

He wouldn't say much about how he caught his bag.

"I just fished hard and ground it out. I'll hold off on the rest for now.

"I've got a lot of spots, but they're kind of hard for me to read with the tides and stuff. The type of fish I've targeted all week definitely live there, but it's a matter of putting five together."

23rd: DeLong Lost Two Good Ones

Ohio rookie Glenn DeLong was in 11th place after day 1, but lost two big fish today and dropped 12 places in the standings.

"I lost an (8-pounder) and a 9 late in the day," he said. "I broke one off in a bush and the other one just came unbuttoned.

"Also, my area slowed down a little for me. I'll have to move to other stuff tomorrow."

He's throwing two different types of crankbaits (with a lip and without) and flipping a 1-ounce jig in about 12 feet of water.

"I have a few other places that I kind of ran through quickly (in practice) that are also shallow with a steep drop. I'll go to them and try to find some bigger bites again.

"I also know where there's a 12-pounder sitting on a bed. I haven't been able to get her to bite the last 2 days, so I'll go back and see if she's ready."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 108 anglers, 96 limits, 5 fours, 6 threes, 1 two.

> BassFan Big Stick John Murray ended up 91st after catching two 9 1/2-pound limits. To read his report, click here to go On Tour With The BassFan Big Sticks.

> Remitz said he's had no trouble sleeping during the last two tournaments. "I've been going to bed at about 10:00 or 10:30 every night. I'm a pretty mellow person anyway, so that helps."

> When Morris was here in 2003, he had a problem with sea lions thrashing his best area. Today he had to contend with two guys bowhunting for carp. "They were right on top of me, muddying up all my grass beds."

> Ohio's Bill Lowen was in 12th place with 19-11 after day 1, but he caught just 9-03 today and fell to 44th. "The tide got me. In order to catch them, I need the tide to be all the way out. It just never dropped low enough today. That's another thing I have to learn – find something else to do when the tide's not playing into your hands."

> Ish Monroe was assessed a 1-pound penalty for arriving a minute late to the launch and was first out of the cut with 28-02 – 1 ounce less than 50th-place Jeremy Starks.
