Skeet Reese wouldn't have been terribly unhappy if he'd been in 50th place after day 2 of the Potomac River Bassmaster Elite Series. The fact that he was 49 spots higher in the standings was cause for readjustment of his goals for the weekend.

The Californian caught 17-00 today and moved up seven places to lead the Top 50 cut with a 33-05 total. He fished the same crowded area he worked on day 1 and isn't sure it'll hold up for day 3.

He had a 13-ounce lead over Arkansas' Mike McClelland, who caught 15-12 today and moved into 2nd with a 32-06 total. He's sharing Reese's primary hole, as is Missouri legend Rick Clunn, who was in 3rd (15-06 today, 32-03 total).

Louisiana's Greg Hackney caught 13-03 for a 30-09 total and ended the day in 4th – the same spot where he began. Texan Alton Jones, who'll leave the Potomac with a check for the first time in his career, completed the Top 5 with 17-13 today and a 30-00 total.

Here's the remainder of the current Top 12:

6. Kelly Jordon: 39-12
7. Steve Kennedy: 29-04
8. Kevin Short: 29-00
9. (tie) Kotaro Kiriyama: 28-07
9. (tie) Gerald Swindle: 28-07
11. Grant Goldbeck: 27-15
12. Jeremy Starks: 27-09

The thunderstorms that spruced up the bite on day 1 were replaced by sunny skies and a stiff northwest wind today. A lot of the first-day leaders made the proper adjustments, but some found the going much rougher – both on the wind-chopped river and at the scales at the end of the day.

The day 1 leader, rookie Kevin Langill of North Carolina, caught just two fish for 4-00 and plummeted to a tie for 34th (22-01). Oklahoma's Tommy Biffle, who was 2nd after day 1, had his first bad day in awhile and caught a mediocre 8-12 limit that dropped him to 18th with 26-09.

Florida veteran Bernie Schultz, who was in a 4th-place tie with Hackney, suffered through a nightmarish day of mechanical difficulties and took a zero when he arrived 5 minutes late for the weigh-in as a passenger in Mike O'Shea's boat. He caught only two keepers, but would have made the Top 50 cut. Instead, he finished 66th with 17-06.

Jones, who started the day in 32nd, made a big upward move with the day's best bag, and Angler of the Year (AOY) leader Mike Iaconelli also catapulted from midfield to Top 12 contention (41st to 14th) with a 16-03 sack that gave him a 27-03 total.

Those anglers hoping for the dark skies of day 1 to return are in big trouble – there's not a cloud in the forecast for tomorrow. The Weather Channel predicts sun with a high temperature of 82 degrees and a north/northeast wind to 7 mph.

The field will be reduced to 12 after tomorrow's weigh-in, and the highest 4-day weight will determine the winner.

Bag of Clones for Reese

Reese's primary objective of making the Top 50 to secure a 2007 Bassmaster Classic berth has been met. With that out of the way – and considering his position at the top of the leaderboard – he can focus on loftier goals.

All five of his fish today were in the 3 1/4- to 3 3/4-pound range.

"It started out real slow," he said. I caught one good one early, and then I caught all the rest of them between 11:00 and 12:00. I got my fifth good one around noon, and then I quit."

He ended up with eight keepers. He isn't sure if the community hole can produce for another day, but he said the same thing after day 1.

"It's dwindling," he said. "The guys in there didn't catch them as good today as a whole.

"It's real hard to say. If a guy could have the area to himself, he could catch a decent bag. But since I have to share, I'm not real optimistic. If I could get 15 pounds tomorrow, that should get me to Sunday, and maybe then I could catch 17 and win this thing."

He has a couple of backup spots, but he'll be in trouble if he has to resort to them.

"I've got some other areas where I think I can catch some fish, but nothing of this size. We'd probably be talking 9 to 11 pounds, unless I got lucky and got a good bite."

A strong start helped Mike McClelland have a relatively stress-free day.

2nd: McClelland Struck Quickly

McClelland put four keepers in his livewell in the first 30 minutes, and that boosted his psychological outlook for the remainder of the day.

"It took some of the pressure off and allowed me to cover some water that I didn't get to yesterday," he said. "There are a lot of places that they can be caught that aren't being fished, and if you find the key deal, you could get a good one or two."

He's fishing around several other leaders, but he's going about it a bit differently.

"A lot of those guys are flipping, but I'm throwing a War Eagle spinnerbait all day long," he said. "Fishing a little bit differently might help me as far as being consistent, but I might not have as many opportunities to get a 4- or 5-pound bite.

"I know what I have to do to get those bites, though. It's just a matter of doing it."

He'll shoot for 15 to 16 pounds tomorrow.

"I think I'll need that to stay in the hunt. Then if I'm fortunate enough to get into the Top 12, I'll slip over to some of those other places on Sunday and try to get a good fish or two.

"I won't catch many (in those places), but I might get a 4-pounder."

Rick Clunn is more worried about the tide than the pressure in the area he shares with several other leaders.

3rd: Clunn Seeks Reversal

Clunn made the Top 50 cut for the eighth time in 10 Elite Series events, but he ranked just 40th in the points coming in. He's had trouble on day 3 (he's finished between 38th and 50th five times), and hopes to reverse that trend tomorrow.

"I just want to have a good day, and at this point I don't know what that really means," he said. "The whole year, my third days have stunk. You work your butt off hard for 3 days of practice and then the first 2 days of the tournament, then it all goes down the drain when you have a sucky day 3. You leave a lot of points on the table when you dump those opportunities.

"I just want to have a good plan and execute it. If that means I catch a 10-pound bag or 16 or 17 pounds, that's okay. I just don't want to have another sucky day 3."

He'll go back to the area he's sharing with Reese, McClelland, et al. His biggest concern is the tide (there's less on the low side each day).

"I think the issue there might be the tide more than the pressure," he said. "The tide's getting worse and worse every day."

He said the anglers there will probably get fewer bites tomorrow.

"We've caught most of the alpha males and alpha females. What we're fishing for now is the less-aggressive fish."

Greg Hackney will likely move around a lot tomorrow in search of an 18-pound bag.

4th: Hackney Holds his Ground

Hackney came in more than 4 pounds lighter today than yesterday, but maintained his spot in the standings. He attributed the lighter bag to the decimation of his primary area by yesterday's high tide.

"The high tide yesterday wiped out all my vegetation," he said. "It was thick stuff, but the water just opened it all up.

"If I ran by it in practice and it looked like it does now, I wouldn't even stop. I went back there this morning hoping that it had come back, but it hadn't."

He caught a quick limit from another spot today, but he anticipates doing a lot of running tomorrow.

"I have another area where I culled two, but I don't like it as a big-bag area either. I might have to run and look, because I know what the deal is.

"These fish are bunched up, and when you find them you can catch them pretty quick. They're in small, confined areas, and finding a couple of those is the only way I can win the tournament."

He has a lofty goal for tomorrow.

"I want 18 pounds. I was a little disappointed I didn't get more yesterday. I'd have put more pressure on those fish if I'd known the whole place was going to disappear."

5th: Relief for Jones

Jones has fished close to a dozen tournaments at the Potomac during his career, but he'd never earned a cent until now.

"It's good to get that monkey off my back," he said. "Even if I was in 50th place instead of 5th, the feeling would still be tremendous.

"The thing that's always amazed me about it is, I love this place so much. I enjoy the way it fishes, and always coming up a little short of making a check just didn't make sense."

His 17-13 bag today was more than 5 1/2 pounds heavier than his day 1 haul.

"I had better execution than what I had yesterday. I'm in an area with some quality fish in it (the same spot being exploited by three of the four anglers in front of him), and I did a little better job today of landing the fish that I hooked and that sort of thing."

He has a backup spot, but doesn't foresee visiting it.

"This area is an all-day commitment. By the time I figured out I needed (the alternate spot), it would be too late. This is the only area I've found where I have a chance to get a big stringer like that, so I'll stick with it do or die."

66th: Schultz Sees Other Extreme

Schultz fished the vast majority of the day without a trolling motor, and then couldn't turn over his big engine when it was time to head back for the launch. He had to hitch a ride with O'Shea, and Peter Thliveros later towed in his boat.

He arrived at the launch 5 minutes late, so his final weight was the same as he'd brought in on a stellar day 1 – 17-06.

"It was the nightmare from hell, and what I did yesterday went all for naught," he said. "I went from one extreme to the other.

"Yesterday couldn't have been any better, and today couldn't have been any worse."

He thinks the heavy rain on day 1 might have damaged his boat's electrical system.

"There's something electrically that's pulling the whole thing down. Maybe all the switches got wet in that torrential rain yesterday."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 102 anglers, 74 limits (two more than yesterday), 5 fours, 9 threes, 9 twos, 4 ones, 1 zero (same as yesterday).

> This tournament is somewhat of a deja vu experience from Reese and Clunn. Those two and eventual winner Carl Maxfield fished the same area at the 2000 Maryland Top 150. Clunn finished 2nd and Reese was 3rd.

> Jones caught three catfish today, including a 12-pounder. "Those catfish bites are really exciting for about 4 seconds, before they roll. You think, 'Man, this is the one.'''

> Marty Stone (27-07) is 2 ounces out of the 12th-place cut spot.

> BassFan Big Stick John Murray made the cut in 43rd place (20-15). Fellow Big Stick Jarrett Edwards caught just one fish for 1-03 today and finished 88th with 11-06. To read his report, click here.
