New Jersey's Mike Iaconelli slammed home his first FLW win today at the Chevy Open (Potomac FLW). He weighed the biggest limit of the tournament yesterday (21-00), and closed the deal with 13-14 today.

His 34-14 winning weight crushed perennial favorite Clark Wendlandt by 4 1/2 pounds. Fans at the weigh-in got to experience Ike's now-famous celebration screams when FLW rolled tape of him catching one of his 5-pounders yesterday.

Although he was hot on the Bassmaster Tour and especially on fire through the Bassmaster Elite 50 series, Ike suffered through a lackluster FLW season. Even this win won't be enough to qualify him for the Forrest L. Wood Championship later this summer. But he's not downbeat. On the contrary: "This is like sweet revenge, since I normally stink in the FLW. So I'm on the edge of my seat – I'm excited."

Wendlandt has also been dragging bottom all year, and said he was pleased to finally pull out of the nosedive with his 2nd-place finish. His 30-05 was just 4 ounces ahead of Jerry Williams, who finished 3rd with 10 fish at 30-01. Since this is an FLW Open, rather than a qualifying event, Wendlandt pocketed $100,000 for 2nd.

The newly-minted FLW Angler of the Year (AOY), Greg Hackney, finished 4th with 10 bass weighing 27-09, and his closest rival, Toshinari Namiki, was 5th with 10 at 25-12.

The rest of the Top 10 shook out like this:

6. Sam Newby: 10, 25-01
7. George Cochran: 10, 23-12
8. Gary Yamamoto: 10, 22-02
9. Brent Chapman: 10, 22-00
10. Carl Svebek III: 8, 18-01

The Potomac kicked out literally tons of bass the last 4 days, and the Top 10 each caught a limit the first 3 days. That changed some today, when conditions were again hot and sunny with a light south breeze, and one angler came up short of a limit.

Ike Overjoyed

"I finally broke out of the shell," Iaconelli said after winning his first FLW event. "It's awesome. This ranks up there with winning the (Bassmaster) Classic. I feel like I'm in the zone. I'm on a roll, and I just want it to continue (into the Classic) in Pittsburg."

He was in 3rd the first day, then moved up to 2nd on cut day. After the weights were zeroed, he grabbed 1st place yesterday with the biggest limit of the tournament – a whopping 21-pound bag.

"Yesterday was an amazing day when everything worked out right," he noted. "It was big fish on light line and a spinning rod. Man, it was exciting."

That awesome day saw him catch 17 keepers. "I was culling 4-pounders. I threw back about a 16- to 17-pound bag."

But today things were slow, and he caught just six keepers. "I got only three fish off that one grassbed I fished yesterday. After that I moved to a high-tide spot and caught a 4-pounder and a 2-pounder. Those fish won it for me."

He led several E50 events this year, but couldn't close. Not so today. He finished strong and took top honors and $200,000.

His winning pattern will be posted soon.

2nd: Wendlandt Wowed

After he struggled all year. Wendlandt finally had a good tournament. "I feel great about (2nd place)," he said. "I'm ecstatic. It was a good week and a half. Hopefully it'll give me some momentum going into next year.

"I had a great day today," he said. It could have been a good bit better, though. "A 5-pounder hit the bait, and I missed it, and a 4-pounder flashed at the bait right at the boat. But that's fishing."

He was 29th the first day but caught the big bag of day 2 – 17-01. With his 31-13 total, he made the cut in 5th. Yesterday, after weights were zeroed for the last 2 days, he caught another 17-04 to land in 2nd place, and today's 13-01 kept him there with 30-05.

"My areas actually cleared up the last 2 days, and my fish didn't set up as well," he noted. "I was fishing better with more stained water. I used a 4-inch green Gambler tube and a shallow-running homemade crankbait in shad and chartreuse colors. I really like using crankbaits in shallow cover.

"I moved around a lot, and the Garmin 182C GPS made it easy to run the tides. It has the tides on it so you can tell just by looking at it."

His strong showing today lifted him only to 91st in the FLW points – well out of the Championship, and more than twice as far down the list as he ever finished before in his 9 years of FLW Tour competition. He's won FLW AOY twice, in 1997 and 2000, and placed in the Top 5 in the points five times.

3rd: Williams Happy

Williams led the opening day with a huge 20-04 bag, and qualified for the Top 10 cut in 6th. Yesterday he was 5th with 14-12, and today added 15-05 to finish 3rd.

"I feel good about it, only because I did everything I could," he said. "I had a big fish break my line today. Some things you can't control. There was nothing I could do.

"I was using 20-pound line and it just ran in and broke me off on some pilings. It wasn't the winning fish, but it was my 2nd-place fish." He needed just 4 ounces to move up.

"We started at 6:30 a.m. today, and I had my first keeper at 6:37," he noted. "I had a limit by 8:30. In all I caught 19 keepers today. I thought it would be tougher with that 50- to 60-boat local tournament going out, but I didn't have any trouble. I was running a pattern, and that's hard to do with a lot of boats. But these locals seem to just get on a spot and stay there. They don't move around."

Williams did move around, and very successfully. "I had an absolute ball this week," he said. "I killed them in practice. I had a 22-pound day fishing buzzbaits, and caught so many fish I had to start bending my hooks down. If I didn't want to get home so bad to see my hound dog, I'd just stay another week."

Hackney's amped – he's the No. 1 angler in the world and the 2005 FLW Angler of the Year.

4th: Hackney High

While Ike was waiting his turn to weigh in, a different drama played out between Hackney and Namiki. Those two found themselves locked in a battle for the FLW AOY race after points leader J.T. Kenney and 2nd-place Anthony Gagliardi missed the Top 10 cut.

The joy was unmistakable as Greg Hackney raised the roof – whooping it up onstage as his victory was declared. He was awarded the honor during the round-robin style weigh-in after two of the Top 10 had been eliminated and finished below Hackney's weight at the time. At that point, there was no way Namiki could make up the 7-point deficit in the standings and overtake Hackney.

George Cochran, whose weigh-in was interrupted by the celebration, said: "He's a great fisherman and he's worked hard all year, and I'm glad to be here when he won it."

Hackney came to the Potomac River 3rd in the FLW AOY points – 16 points off the leader, J. T. Kenney, who considers the Potomac his home water. The home lake jinx got Kenney, and when Anthony

Both anglers scraped bottom yesterday, placing 9th and 10th, with Namiki over Hackney. But today, Hackney's 16-15 was enough to flip-flop their relative positions, and he finished 4th in the tournament and won the AOY title.

"It would have been nice to win the tournament," he said on stage. "But my whole goal coming here was to win the Angler of the Year. I've wanted it for about 5 years. I just asked the good Lord, 'Just one time let me finish the deal,' and it worked out and I'm really happy."

He wasn't too happy with his performance yesterday, though. "I took a beating yesterday," he said. "I lost too many fish yesterday. I thought I had blown my chance for Angler of the Year. But I made a good adjustment last night and just put on a clinic (today). I caught 30 keepers.

"I changed the knot on my hook. I'd never snelled a hook before, but I got a friend of mine to show me how to tie it (last night). I practiced until I felt like I had it. And it worked."

10th: Svebek Tickled

Carl Svebek has had a rough year on the FLW Tour, but today he ended the season on a high note. He caught a 12-10 limit yesterday, but was able to add just three fish today (5-07) to end up 10th with 18-01. Still, he's happy.

"I'm tickled, really," he said. "I've struggled this year. It's good to finish in the Top 10 in the last (event). It's kind of my Championship, so to speak, since I didn't qualify (for the Forrest L. Wood Championship). It was a neat deal. I had a lot of fun."

He had just one area to fish, and pretty much one lure that worked for him, up until today. "I fished one 300-yard stretch of grass over and over," he noted. "It was about 3 feet deep there, in a bay off the river. I caught most of my fish on the high tide, when it flooded the grass.

"I just ticked the grass with a Gambler Ninja Spin spinnerbait. I caught 15 keepers the first day, 14 the second day and just five yesterday.

"I didn't have a good day today," he added. "I fished in there for 2 hours without a bite, and then just went fishing. I think I just beat on them too much and they didn't replenish. It just played out."

He caught one fish flipping a jig on the low tide, and all the rest on the spinnerbait on a high tide. "That was unusual," he said. "Being from Arkansas, I don't understand tides, but the guys who do always say that the fish bite better on the low tide. They didn't for me."

Notable

> Day 4 stats – 10 anglers, 9 limits, 1 three.

> With his 2nd-place finish today, Clark Wendlandt recorded his 19th FLW Tour Top 10 finish. That ties Rick Clunn's 19.

> Gary Yamamoto stopped fishing yesterday after his co-angler, Pat Wilson of Penngrove, Calif., caught a 5-pounder. "He just put down his rod and told me I needed to cast (to a certain area)," Wilson said. "He knew I had a chance to win and he gave me the opportunity to finish my limit." Wilson won the $40,000 co-angler 1st-place prize yesterday.

> Because it gets confusing, here again is how FLW AOYs are profiled: The AOY award is sponsored by Land O'Lakes, so the winning angler wears that jersey for the initial photos. Then the AOY is put on Corn Flakes boxes sold in Wal-Marts, and for that photo shoot wears a Kellogg's jersey.
