Yesterday's bed-fish fest came to a screeching halt today at the Harris Chain Bassmaster. The windy and colder conditions put the lid on the sight bite, but the flippers continued to catch fish. The mid-50s temperatures and 15 to 20 mph winds sent many anglers into shivers as they wondered whether this was really Florida. But the two 11-pound bass brought delivered a strong geography lesson.

Yesterday's leader Jim Bitter expanded his lead to 3 1/2 pounds today with another limit. This one weighed 13-09, which gives him a 2-day total of 10 fish for 40-05. Moving up six places to 2nd was George Cochran, whose limit today weighed 20-06 (total 10, 36-13).

Todd Faircloth's nipping at Cochran's heels. He moved up one place to 3rd with five for 18-05 today (total 10, 36-07). Guy Eaker popped up from 14th to 4th with 17-14 today (total 10, 33-04). Fifth is still held by Larry Nixon, who caught a 16-02 limit today (total 8, 33-00).

The rest of the Top 12 are:

6. Peter Thliveros 10, 32-09
7. Skeet Reese 9, 31-00
8. Tommy Martin 10, 30-12
9. Andre Moore 10, 30-01
10. Aaron Martens 6, 28-07
11. Mark Rogers 9, 27-15
12. John Crews 10, 27-14

At tomorrow's weigh-in the field will be cut to the Top 6, who will fish Sunday.

Bitter Battles Cold

Two kinds of bitter were out on the Harris Chain today, and while one was cold, the other was hot. The biting cold may have taken some anglers off their game, but not Jim Bitter, who despite weighing just half as much (13-09) as he did yesterday (26-12), still retained the tournament lead.

Why half as much weight? "I thought it could very well happen," he said. "There were more people in there than yesterday, and possibly some 5-pounders were spread out among all those boats.

"There was too much pressure in there today. There were a lot of boats in there today that weren't in there yesterday. That's not supposed to happen to the leader.

He said it he was frustrated. "I couldn't get to my best spots today because I was afraid to move and lose my spot. There was a boat in front of me and a boat in back of me. I was stuck fishing one small spot. I finally left an hour early to try to go and find a big fish.

"That usually doesn't work out, but it did today." He caught a 4-pounder.

The fish in his main area were biting about the same as yesterday, but the wind made it hard to pitch where he wanted, and it moved the grass around. "Yesterday I could see the grass move when a fish moved, and then pitch in and catch him. Today, I couldn't see that."

George Cochran's sharing a canal with Jim Bitter and Guy Eaker.

As for tomorrow, he hopes that with just four tournament boats in the canal, he can catch a decent bag again, even though it's supposed to be breezy. "I think there should be enough for a limit, but they might be smaller if we're catching throwbacks (from the last 2 days). If they're on beds, they'll bite again – though they'll be finicky.

"The good thing about making the Top 12 cut is that there won't be nearly as many boats in there tomorrow.

"I'm guessing I'll need at least 9 pounds tomorrow to make the Top 6 cut," he said. "If I can do that, Skeet Reese (7th) would have to catch 18 pounds to pass me."

Cochran Pleased

Cochran caught all his bites today to cull up to 20-06, which was 4 pounds better than yesterday. That moved him from 8th to 2nd. "I had a good time today," he said. "I was very fortunate to have found a good area in practice, and it turned out to be just as good during the tournament.

"Jim Bitter, Guy Eaker and I are sharing a wide canal about a half-mile long. We each have about a 150-yard stretch that we're working.

"I'm flipping a Strike King Bleeding Bait Tube to heavy cover on 65-pound P-Line braid," he said. "They're spawning under that cover. I was using mono yesterday and lost two 3s and two 4s because the line had too much stretch. I didn't lose any today. I caught all seven keepers."

He noted that yesterday, during the fog-shortened sight-fishing festival, only seven boats fished in the canal with him. Today there were 18. But tomorrow, barring local traffic, it might be just three or four.

"It's possible that we could run out of fish in 2 more days, whereas guys like Larry Nixon and Tommy Martin could continue to do well (with less company)," he said. "But I'll do the same thing tomorrow. It's too late to change gameplans, though I do have one area I can go to if I go 4 or 5 hours without a bite. I've caught an 8-pounder each day so far, though, so I hope I don't have to move."

Nixon Consistent

Nixon boated a 16-02 limit today – nearly the same weight as his three fish yesterday (16-14). He retained 5th place in the standings, same as yesterday, too. He fished the same area with the same bait – a 6-inch straight-tail Power Worm (watermelonseed) that he pitch to Kissimmee grass edges.

"Today was cold, cold, cold and windy," he said. "I could hardly press the button on the reel with my thumb that I had surgery on.

"The fish are in 3 to 4 feet of water," he noted. "I'm pitching to cuts, points, indentations, docks – anything that's different in the grass. They usually hit on the fall or the first time I move (the worm). It's a big area with two or three key places with bigger fish. I'm not moving much until I fish those thoroughly. I've caught some bigger fish on a junebug Power Hawg."

Why only 3 fish yesterday? "I lost them yesterday afternoon when the sun came out and it got calm, but I found them again today," he said. "I think this place has a lot more fish than we realize, but they scatter out and you can't pinpoint them."

He'll be back at it tomorrow and do the same thing, and thinks the eventual winner on Sunday may have 70 pounds for his 4-day total, but "it's unpredictable. I really have no idea."

Crews in by Ounces

John Crews made a big move from 40th into the Top 12 at 12th today. His 3-ounce advantage over rookie Greg Gutierrez made all the difference. Crews sacked an 18-02 limit, which included the biggest bass of his life – 11 pounds even. That's a nice fish, but this is Florida, and he missed big-fish honors by an ounce.

"I'd rather have made the cut than got big fish for the day," he said. "I caught it at 9:00. It was my first fish of the day. Then I put my head down to get more to go with it. I didn't want to come in with just that one and have it look like plain luck."

He wound up catching six keepers in an area not far from three other Top 12 finishers: Bitter, Cochran and Eaker. "We all have our areas pretty much staked out," Crews said. "I didn't fish there the first day, but I had some good bites there in practice. It doesn't look like the others are fishing in the two areas I have, so there shouldn't be any problems tomorrow."

He was flipping a Kinami Nories Bug to mixed vegetation. "It's monotonous fishing because you have to fish real slow," he said. "Most places you'll get your flipping bites on the fall. But this is Florida and it was really cold today. It's like the fish watched it fall, then went over and picked it up off the bottom. But even with the wind, I could feel the taps since I was using Triple Fish Bully Braid."

Can he make up the ground on Bitter, fishing the same general area? "I'm not shooting to win tomorrow," he said. "I just need to make the Top 6 cut, and then fish to win. I probably need 13 to 14 pounds (on Saturday). A limit is a good possibility, but for a big weight you need that big bite."

Ferguson: Biggest of His Life

Art Ferguson landed the biggest bass of his life today – a bruiser that weighed 11-01. The fish comprised half his four-fish weight today. His 22-08 moved him up 110 places to 25th (from 135th yesterday).

Art Ferguson was so excited he had to lay down in the boat for 5 minutes.

"I was so excited when I caught that 11-pounder that I had to lay down in the boat for 5 minutes," he said. "I caught it fishing a Senko on a Carolina rig. That's powerful stuff, brother.

"I think (if I'd caught) one more bass, I'd have made the cut," he said. "I missed two today." And of course there was the 8 1/2-pounder he accidentally snagged while bed-fishing yesterday and had to release per BASS rules.

"Yesterday I went bed-fishing, but today I fished a Carolina rig offshore in outer grass edges," he said. "There was a mix of Kissimmee grass, eelgrass and sand in the area, and it was about 8 feet deep. It was close to where I caught 18 pounds last year on the second day."

He had a similar experience last year too, when he sight-fished for small weight and then went dragging and bounced back. "Makes me wonder what would have happened if I hadn't gone bed-fishing," he said.

Carolina-rig Gear: Kistler Extra Heavy LTA 7'6" rod, Shimano Curado 100 reel, 16-pound Sunline Sniper fluorocarbon line, 1/2-ounce sinker, 4/0 Owner wide gap hook on a 3-foot leader, Yamamoto Senko (watermelon).
