Lucas Will Take 3-Ounce Lead Into Day 3

A year that got off to a lackluster start for Justin Lucas is ending with a major flourish. Meanwhile, a campaign of consistent excellence for Ron Nelson has culminated in a runaway Angler of the Year title.

Lucas, the winner of the Bass Pro Tour season finale last month at Sturgeon Bay, caught a 19-04 stringer to move into the lead at the Lake Erie FLW Pro Circuit Super Tournament out of Sandusky, Ohio with a 41-05 total. He'll begin day 3 of the 4-day event with 3-ounce advantage over 2nd-place Jeremy Lawyer, with the entire Top 10 separated by a little more than 5 pounds on a venue that's likely to be pounded by northeast winds over the final 2 rounds.

Nelson's day-2 haul was just 2 ounces lighter than Lucas' and moved him from 44th to 18th in the tournament standings. He guaranteed himself a Top-50 finish, which is far more than he needed to clinch the points crown (he came into the event with a 73-point lead).

Appropriately, his bag included a 6-pound smallmouth that took big-bass honors for the day.

"It's a huge deal to win that trophy," said Nelson, an easy-going Michigan resident who was the tour's Rookie of the Year in 2019. "It really hasn't sunk in yet because so much of my focus has been on smaller goals like trying to catch a limit. I only had four fish yesterday and even though I had a decent weight (15-02), I kind of felt like I left the door open. When I caught that big one today, I knew it was going to happen. It was the best feeling when I got back (to the launch) and gave the boat-check guy my number.

"It's been a year of challenge and change for all of us (due to the coronavirus pandemic), but it's truly been a blessed year for me and I'm grateful to be where I'm at."

Lawyer, the only competitor to clear the 20-pound mark on both days, moved up 2 places with a 20-04 bag that gave him a 41-02 total. Alton Jones Jr. climbed 8 places to 3rd with a 21-13 sack for a 40-13 aggregate.

Day-1 leader Josh Bertrand's 17-08 bag was almost 5 pounds lighter than the previous day's compilation and he dropped to 4th with 17-08. Spencer Shuffield, who's had an outstanding season after a 4-year absence from the tour, rounds out the Top 5 with 38-11 (20-14 on day 2).

The lower half of the Top 10 is comprised of Jacob Wheeler with 38-04 (17-14), Todd Faircloth with 37-09 (18-08), Scott Dobson with 37-04 (19-06), Fred Roumbanis with 36-05 (18-04) and Jim Moynagh with 36-02 (17-14).

Jones, Shuffield, Dobson, Roumbanis and Moynagh slid into the Top 10, supplanting Boyd Duckett, Joseph Webster, Gerald Spohrer, Tommy Dickerson and Kelly Jordon. Spohrer (108th place after a one-fish, 3-04 day) and Dickerson (68th, three fish for 6-10) fell completely out of the Top-50 cut.

Jon Canada, who weighed just 8-00 on day 1, caught a tournament-best 24-08 stringer for a whopping 122-place improvement to 23rd. Others who staged big rallies to make the cut were Bradley Dortch (up 87 places to 47th with a 19-04 bag), Matt Becker (up 85 to 34th, 19-12) and Grae Buck (up 76 to 20th, 21-10).

The relatively calm conditions afforded the 187-angler field greater mobility than it had experienced on day 1 and the going was much easier for the large group of competitors who made the 90-mile run to Lake St. Clair. That won't be the case on day 3 as winds are expected to blow as hard as 25 mph and there's a strong possibility that anglers could be confined to Sandusky Bay.

Lucas said he fished hard all day on Erie and managed just seven keeper bites on a dropshot rig – two of which he lost. That's the same number he'd enticed the previous day, but he didn't lay off his fish like he did after amassing 21 1/2 pounds on day 1.

"The bite wasn't any better and it was probably a little bit tougher," he said. "I think there's not enough fish and they're getting a lot of pressure – they need fewer boats on the top of their heads.

"It's just a matter of whether I can grind it out and get five bites and put them all in the boat. I've got a couple spots I haven't hit yet, but I don't know if anybody else has been fishing them or whether there's even any fish there. I'll start on my main stuff and I've got one spot that I want to hit that I caught three off of today. I think it's an early morning spot, but it was 45 minutes or an hour (into the day) before I hit it today."

Lawyer, who's also staying in Erie, boxed all of his weight in two flurries – he caught three from one location and two from another. His biggest specimen was a 5 1/4-pounder.

"I've caught more weight than I thought I would catch," he said. "I thought I could catch maybe three fish a day and I've caught seven both days, so I'm pretty tickled. This is an enormous lake and maybe there's seven more out there with my name on them if I can get out there and poke around.

"I'm using (Garmin) LiveScope and looking at everything and when I see a group of fish or a boulder or whatever, I throw at it. After I've thrown at a hundred, I finally get one to bite."

Jones has taken the grueling trip to St. Clair on both days and won't be too upset if he's not allowed to do that on day 3.

"This might've been my last day of glory, but to be truthful I wouldn't mind if they lock us in the bay, even though I didn't find anything there in practice," he said. "I don't want to even try that run to St. Clair again, but it's the only way I can compete. If we're allowed to go, I'll have to try."

His biggest fish on day 2 was a 4 1/2-pounder.

"We had calmer water and I was able to fish thoroughly and methodically. I had the same amount of bites I had yesterday, but I lost two good ones yesterday and I didn't lose any today."
