It's been a pretty inactive year on Lake Erie. The Bassmaster Elite Series, FLW Tour and Stren Series skipped their typical stops on the Great Lake.

The biggest tournament to hit Erie this season occurred last week when the final Bassmaster Northern Open launched out of Sandusky, Ohio. Although the field was quite small at 94 boats,

it was full of Erie heavy-hitters like Joe Balog, Frank Scalish, Steve Clapper and Pete Gluszek, among others.

But a rising force in the sport bested them all over the 2-day weather-shortened contest. Jonathon VanDam - whom some call JVD, in reference to his legendary uncle - caught a monster 24-08 final-day bag to edge runner-up Gluszek by almost 3 pounds.

It was the 21-year-old's first win at this level and it netted him nearly $27,000. It also moved him to 13th in the final Northern OPn points. BASS invites the Top 7 from each division to fish the Elite Series, and will work down to the 12th-place spot if there are refusals. VanDam's thus one spot out of Elite Series qualification, although he thinks there may be a chance he could fish the Elites next year.

About the win, VanDam said: "It was amazing. I'd been close a couple of times - I was 3rd in my first event and leading going into the final day, but I let it slip away. And (this year) at the Chesapeake, I was 3rd after 1 day and finished 13th. I'm so competitive, and I wanted to win so bad, to finally get the win was unbelievable. It was a dream come true.

"I'm trying to fish the Elite next year," he added. "BASS originally said they'd go down 12 places to get seven guys, but I've been talking to them. And some guys are saying they'll go 15 places if they have to. I'm crossing my fingers, but we'll wait and see."

More on that as commitments for next year's Elite Series begin to roll in. For now, here's how VanDam won the Erie Northern Open.

Practice

Although he hails from Kalamazoo, VanDam had never fished Erie out of Sandusky, so he arrived early to log an extra 3 days of practice. With weather, he was able to practice 2 of the 3 days, but said he didn't find "much of anything at all."

"I was kind of going for a Top 5 for a shot at making the Elites, and the kind I was catching wasn't what I was shooting for," he said. "I was looking for the winning fish."

When the 2 1/2-day "official" practice started, he changed location and focused on the Vermillion area. He fished out deep the morning of the first day and caught a few smaller fish. He then decided to move shallower.

"I was running down the lake, barely on plane and watching the graph, and all of a sudden I saw a big spike shoot up to 10 feet," he noted. "I turned around, dropped a buoy on the highest spot and caught a 5-pounder on my second or third cast with a crankbait."

He spent the rest of his practice driving, watching the graph and marking rises that topped out at 8 to 10 feet. He said the depth of the water around a rise didn't concern him much - sometimes it would be 24 feet off the deep side, sometime 13. But the depth on the top of the rise was important, and the rise itself had to be sharp.

He went into competition with a series of those spots punched into his Humminbird GPS. "It worked out really nice with the Humminbird because I could drive over a hump, freeze the frame, then scroll over it and put a waypoint right on top," he said.

Competition

> Day 1: 5, 20-06
> Day 2: Canceled
> Day 3: 5, 24-08
> Total = 10, 44-14

There was a good blow on day 1 out of the north/northeast, which was a problem for VanDam because his spots were on the southwest shore of the lake. That meant the wind rode the entire length of the lake right to his area and he faced 6- to 7-foot waves.

"I just tried my milk run," he said. "I knew there were good fish there, but I didn't realize how good they were until the first day. I only got five keeper bites the whole day - all on a dropshot. It was too windy to throw a crank. Four of them were good fish, and the fifth was about a pound and a half. I thought I had maybe 17 pounds or so, but I weighed 20 1/2 pounds, so I realized the fish were bigger than I thought."

He sat in 8th after weigh-in.

As noted, day 2 was canceled due to heavy winds - again from the north/northeast. That concerned VanDam, because it was likely that his Vermillion area would be too muddy to fish.

A wind change did occur the final day. It switched to the south - great news for VanDam, who was fishing the southwest shore, but bad news for the leaders who'd fished Canada on day 1. They'd feel the brunt of the final-day winds.

Still, visibility was poor in Vermilion, and 4- to 5-foot residual waves were still rolling from the previous day. He battled the elements with a dropshot but after a significant time had just one 14-incher to show for it.

"I was kind of worried at that point, and felt they couldn't see the bait in the mud," he said. "I picked up a crankbait. I knew if I could get five bites on the crank they'd be good fish. On my second cast, I bumped off a couple of small rocks, then hit a good rock and the rod loaded up. It was a 6-pounder. I ended up with one more fish at that same spot, then started working my milk run.

"They started climbing all over the crank. I ended up catching 15 fish between 4 and 6pounds, all on the same stuff I fished the first day with a dropshot."

About his pattern, he noted that the water temperature the first day was about 72 degrees, but dropped to about 70 by the final day. Also, none of his spots had grass - the bottom was just chunky, jagged rock.

Winning Gear Notes

> Dropshot gear: 7' medium-action Quantum Superlite rod, Quantum Energy PTi 30 spinning reel, 8-pound Bass Pro Shops XPS fluorocarbon, 1/0 Gamakatsu Spitshot-Dropshot hook, 1/2-ounce River2Sea tungsten dropshot weight (10" dropper), Strike King 4" Elaztech Finesse worm (green-pumpkin).

> Crankbait gear: 7'10" medium-heavy Quantum Tour KVD cranking rod, Quantum Energy PT casting reel (5.1:1), 12-pound Bass Pro Shops XPS fluorocarbon, Strike King Series 5 (chartreuse sexy shad).

> He switched out the stock hooks on the crankbait for the new Mustad KVD Elite trebles.

The Bottom Line

  • Main factor in his success - "Making that decision on the final day to switch to a crankbait. I went through all my areas and hardly caught anything on the dropshot. The fish weren't seeing the bait and I needed to do something different. That was the key decision of the tournament."

  • Performance edge - "I'd have to say my boat and motor - a Triton TR21X3 with a Mercury 250 Pro XS and MotorGuide trolling motor. Honestly, the waves were pretty bad, and in my opinion I've never been in a better rough-water boat than that Triton. I had a 25-mile run in 6- to 7-foot waves and it was phenomenal."

    Notable

    > VanDam is sponsored by: Triton, Mercury, MotorGuide, Strike King, Quantum, Humminbird, Kaenon sunglasses, D&R Sports Center (Kalamazoo), Bassaholics, Deka batteries, Navionics, Gemini Sport Marketing and Biosonix.

    > He's currently in the process of finishing a 4-year degree in marketing.

    > His father Randy VanDam, who owns D&R Sports Center, holds the Ohio smallmouth record, which he caught out of Sandusky in 1993. It weighed 9-08.
