Text From Cox Put Carson On Present Track

Keith Carson, the winner of last week's Lay Lake Bassmaster Eastern Open, and tour-level standout John Cox grew up just two streets apart in Florida. They fished together a lot as kids and after high school, Cox spent 8 years working for the commercial painting operation owned by Carson's family.

"He was really good," Carson said of Cox's painting abilities. "I've never worked with anybody as good as he was since he quit."

Carson is back with the painting company, started by his father and now run by his brother, following a 4-year stint as a UPS driver. A text message from Cox 2 years ago prompted the 33-year-old to get out of the chocolate-colored trucks and uniforms.

"All it said was, 'Do you want to be a good UPS driver or a good fisherman?' and right then I quit UPS," Carson recalled. "It was a good job that paid good money with good benefits, but it wasn't what I wanted to do with my life.

"I'd rather be broke and happy fishing than making a hundred grand a year and not be happy."

His brother was all in favor of him returning to the family business, which would afford him time off to fish. Now his goal is to qualify for the Elite Series and he might've made it this year if not for a 132nd-place bomb in the second event. In addition to his win at Lay, he had a 4th-place showing at the Kissimmee Chain and a 28th at Cherokee Lake.

"Unfortunately, I had that one bad tournament at Hartwell. A cousin who I'd lived with passed away and I found out about it on the way there – he'd struggled with alcohol addiction. If I'd had another finish in the 20s there, I'd have won the points (race)."

As a consolation prize, he joined Cox as a qualifier for next year's Bassmaster Classic at Lake Ray Roberts in Texas. He won't make a pre-practice trip before the January 1 cutoff, but Cox already has.

"He went there just to scope out the running lanes in all the timber. That should allow us to be a lot more efficient (during official practice) because we won't be trying to figure all that out."

Kept Mind Open

Carson had never been to Lay before and neither had Cox, so his well-traveled buddy was of no help beforehand. His 4 1/2 days of practice weren't particularly productive, but he did latch on to the notion that there were some quality grass-oriented fish – both largemouth and spotted bass – up the Coosa River.

"There were miles of dead water and the fish would all be on one clump although the whole stretch looked the same," he said. "It had to do with the depth; the holes they would sit in. Ten feet was a good number and that (deep water) would be right up next to the grass – the grass was on like a 1-foot shelf."

He caught 13 of his weigh-in fish on Berkley Frittside 5 crankbait. He flipped up the other two with a Berkley Creature Hawg and they were beauts – a 6-pounder and a 4 on back-to-back to back throws into matted vegetation on day 1.

"It was a stretch I'd never practiced on and I never got another bite there the other 2 days," he said.

His 16-10 opening-day stringer put him in 2nd place and he moved to the top of the standings the following day with his tournament-best 18-10 haul. He carried a lead of almost 3 1/2 pounds into the final round.

"My first two spots didn't produce and I told my camera guy I was gonna go to a spot where I'd caught three 2 12-pounders (on day 2). On my way, I was driving by some grass and something told me to go it it, so I went with it. I pulled in there and caught a largemouth over 3 pounds on my first cast, a spot that was over 2 on my next cast and another keeper on my third cast."

He stayed within a half-mile of that locale for the remainder of the day, fishing both sides of the channel. He completed his limit and eventually culled his way up to 11-13, winning by more than 4 pounds over runner-up Jacob Walker.

He said his mental outlook going into the last day was a big advantage.

"We went through vast weather changes and huge temperature swings throughout the tournament, from 25 degrees on the first morning to pouring rain on day 2 to bluebird conditions on day 3, and some of the other guys (in the Top 12) were really down on themselves. We had a fog delay for an hour and a half and guys were yelling things like 'Let's go' and 'Come on, this sucks' and 'Why do we have to weigh in at 2:15? It should be 3 o'clock.

"I sat back and thought about it and I had a 3-07 lead, which was nice. I thought that if everybody else was going out with a bad attitude and I went out with a good attitude, I'd probably win. I stayed positive, fished new areas and let the river reveal itself to me."
