Strickland Stuck With Punching Program

Laramy Strickland called it a textbook Florida bass fishing spot. Matted hydrilla, cattails, pennywort mats, lily pads. All luscious green and not a hint of aquacide in sight. What more could a bass angler want in mid-February?

For the Harris Chain of Lakes FLW Pro Circuit last week, this area turned into Strickland’s playground – his version of marsh madness. It was a part of Lake Griffin he knew well, too. The Bushnell, Fla., resident fished it many times before and has duck hunted around the same water during the winter.

“It’s just all natural and the fish just love it,” Strickland said. “It’s a true natural Florida deal.”

And it was right in his wheelhouse. The Pro Circuit newcomer stuck to his Florida roots and rode a punching pattern most of the way to collect the first major victory of his fishing career. A mammoth 31-06 stringer on Saturday accounted for more than half of his 61-04 total over three days (day 2 was wiped out due to high winds), but his 15-04 effort on Sunday helped lock up the win.

Strickland, who was coming off a 119th-place finish at the season opener at Sam Rayburn Reservoir, said winning close to home only added to the thrill of it all.

“It’s starting to sink in,” Strickland said. “It’s very humbling. It feels different than I thought it would. It’s always been a dream of mine since I started doing it. I told my family that I’ve seen so many people win and lift those big checks over their heads. I got to lift that check over my head and I got to do it in front of my hometown crowd and that made it the best experience. It was pretty easy to hold up for as hard it was to get.”

Stay. Right. There.

Strickland’s triumph was made possible by a couple key elements. First, he knew the fish in that particular area were resident fish and there were plenty of them. During his duck hunting trips in there, he recalled seeing big bass breaking the surface to feed.

“Those fish had been in there for months and months,” he said. “I was hoping the conditions would be right. In practice, I knew they were still there. I just had to catch ‘em. There are a lot of resident fish there, but I knew there would be more fish pulling in.”

In practice, the water temperature was hovering around 70 degrees, which Strickland said was the perfect scenario for those fish to be in the spawning mode. He checked the area on the afternoon of the first day of practice and fished without a hook.

“I went to the left and got 10 bites pretty quick and shook off three big ones,” he said. “It was unbelievable. It was crazy. I didn’t catch a bass, but I knew they were giants.”

He spent Monday and most of Tuesday elsewhere on the Harris Chain, but revisited the marshy area late in the day. He veered to the right this time and coaxed a dozen bites in an hour.

“I knew they were there, but they were really in there,” he added.

Stayed Put

Strickland made a bee line to the area to start day 1. It wasn’t as easy as some places were to access. It required a roughly 45-minute trolling motor journey to reach the key parts of the area.

Strickland’s total on day 1 (14-10) was a bit below his expectations, but it gave him a taste of the potential that lived there. He had a seven-pound kicker in his stringer and lost two others that were similar size. He also lost one that he couldn’t turn after setting the hook.

“I just struggled to keep them buttoned,” he said.

Following the cancelled day, the full field returned to the water and Strickland’s hopes were still high, especially in the wake of the cool front that accompanied the wind.

“I knew it would help me because there were so many big females in there and when it got cold, they’d pull up under the mats,” he said.

Sure enough, the 58-degree water had those fish grouped up under the heavy vegetation and over the course of 75 minutes Saturday morning, Strickland ran roughshod over them. By 10:17 a.m., he’d amassed a 31-06 stringer that was anchored by a 9-04 and an 8-12. It reached a point where he was throwing back 3 1/2-pounders that weren’t helping, so he eased back.

“Every single clump had them in it,” he said. “It was as textbook as it comes.”

With his confidence soaring and knowing he was one day away from clinching a massive win – and six-figure payday – Strickland was anxious to return to the water for the final day. Nothing went as planned, however, as he was stuck on two keepers at noon.

“For some reason, the fished pull out of the mats,” he said. “I was on top of the world and thought I’d go back in there and smash ‘em, but that didn’t happen.”

He changed to a smaller soft plastic on his punch rig. He also decreased his weight from two ounces to one. He then moved across a nearby canal to a stretch of pads that had mats blown into them. The water temperature had started to rise, and he finished the day flipping that vegetation. Within the last 45 minutes, he caught a pair of 3-pounders and a 6 to close out the day and tournament.

“I stuck to my gut and flipped mats all day,” he said. “Around 1:15 is when I started to get a lot of bites and I had to leave by 2.”
