Typically, competitors who make the cut after day 2 of an FLW Tour event welcome the reduced boat traffic and fishing pressure that comes when 150 or so other anglers are eliminated from the mix.

When competition at the Harris Chain FLW Tour resumes Saturday morning, the thinner field will be noticeable, but Lake Harris will be the center of attention due to the swarm of contenders expected to continue sampling its waters after it churned out a number of big stringers Friday.

Among those who hung out in Harris all day was Chris Johnston, who had nearly 25 1/2 pounds in his livewell before 10 a.m. His 25-07 stringer catapulted the Ontario native into the lead - he was 12th after day 1 - with a two-day total of 45-04.

Tony Dumitras walloped 22-10 (all in Harris) and jumped into 2nd with 42-05. Floridian Matt Greenblatt fished in - you guessed it - Harris and delivered 22-01 to pull into 3rd with a 41-12 total. Glenn Browne, another Floridian, went against the grain and collected his second straight 20-pound stringer elsewhere and moved up five spots to 4th, sporting a 41-11 aggregate.

Ronald Young has sampled three different lakes so far and today the Tour rookie sacked 23-00 to round out the top 5 with 40-04.

After 11 anglers cracked 20 pounds on Thursday, 12 more did it today with 10 of those 12 advancing to day 3 of competition. Browne is the only competitor to top the 20-pound mark each day.

Here's a look at the Top 10 after the first day of competition, with deficit margin from Johnston indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Chris Johnston: 45-04
2. Tony Dumitras: 42-05 (2-15)
3. Matt Greenblatt: 41-12 (3-08)
4. Glenn Browne: 41-11 (3-09)
5. Ronald Young: 40-04 (5-00)
6. Zack Birge: 38-06 (6-14)
7. Koby Kreiger: 38-01 (7-03)
8. Jamie Horton: 36-14 (8-06)
9. John Devere: 36-09 (8-11)
10. Shawn Murphy: 36-00 (9-04)

As is often the case in multi-day Florida tournaments there was plenty of shuffling on the leaderboard with a number of competitors rallying from triple-digit territory to make the top-30 cut or earn a check. Larry Nixon had 22-02 today and improved 82 spots to 21st while Matt Reed caught 20-04 and jumped 81 places to 27th.

Boo Woods rallied 62 spots to 16th behind a 23-01 limit while John Hunter moved up 44 spots into 18th thanks to his 21-09 stringer. Wade Curtiss dug himself out of a massive hole with a 21-04 stringer that carried him from 157th to a 41st-place finish.

Kerry Milner was 10th after day 1, but a 7-11 limit today knocked him down to 44th.

The weather, which has been stable all through practice and the first two days, could throw the remaining 30 competitors a curveball Saturday with clouds and a chance of rain expected to move into the Leesburg area around 2 p.m. Prior to that, it's supposed to be clear and sunny with temperatures in the low to mid 80s and a slight breeze out of the southeast.

The field will be cut down to the top 10 after day 3 with the finalists moving on to fish Sunday when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Johnston Got An Early Start

> Day 2: 5, 25-07 (10, 45-04)

Johnston figured he was bound to have a good day based on how he caught his first bass this morning. After throwing his bait out, he felt a small hit. He set the hook and didn't feel much weight, but suddenly his rod loaded up. What he believes happened was a tiny bass hit his lure and during the retrieve that bass got inhaled by the 6-pounder that he fought back to the boat, setting the tone for his big day.

"Things started out right," he said. "You're meant to catch them when that happens."

On Thursday, he caught three of his weigh-in fish in Lake Griffin and two in Harris. With a shorter day today, he opted to remain in Harris and hopes he doesn't have to leave.

"I'm looking forward to it, but I can't say I have them dialed in," he added. "If I go to my first spot and they're not there, it could get pretty tough. Where I'm fishing, I saw some fish busting later in the day near a bend in the hydrilla and that's where I caught them. If they're there in the morning, it should be fun. I might not get a huge bag, but maybe I'll get a limit to take the pressure off."

The highlight for Johnston today came when he made a long cast with a lipless crankbait and almost immediately felt a jolt. It turned out to be an 8-06 kicker that trumped the 6-pounder from earlier.

"I set the hook and it didn't move," he said. "It was in 12 or 13 feet of water and I was watching my line come up and up and when it broke the surface, I was like, 'Oh my God.' Luckily, it didn't hung up in the stuff."

Tony Dumitras caught his personal-best bass today.

He had most of his weight by 10 a.m. and made a late upgrade with a 4-pounder today. He said the challenge has been scouring over all the hydrilla and deciding where to settle in.

"The problem is in the hydrilla you can get a bite anywhere," he said. "Sometimes it's random, but there are wolf packs of largemouth out there and I started on those in the morning. There's also a shad spawn going on early so they're aggressive.

"During the day, I'll fish the edges and hopefully get lucky and run into a group and catch three or four really quick."

2nd: Slowing Down Worked for Dumitras

> Day 2: 5, 22-10 (10, 42-05)

With his big bag today, Dumitras secured the best finish and first payday of his FLW Tour career. In 22 previous tournaments, his best finish was 80th (Wheeler Lake - 2012).

"If they're still there tomorrow, I'm going to put my head down and fish it hard," he said. "I have some others to go if they're not biting."

He said most of his weight came before noon and he compiled it from a 500-yard long stretch of grass that he slowly drifted along with the wind. He repeated the cycle four or five times.

"It's a very slow approach," he added.

The highlight on the slow drifts was an 8-13 that anchored his bag. It's his personal-best largemouth. With the conditions expected to remain largely unchanged, he believes another 20-pound stringer is possible.

3rd: Greenblatt Needs the Sun

> Day 2: 5, 22-01 (10, 41-12)

Greenblatt, who finished 34th at the Harris Chain last year, is excited about heading back out Saturday.

"I think they're coming to me," he said. "I'm not sight-fishing them so it's a matter of what's left, what comes and what leaves. I'm just blind casting. There was a lot of traffic today and I still caught them."

He believes his technique is different from most and has triggered bigger fish to bite.

"They're throwing spinning rods and little worms; that's not what I'm doing," he added. "They like to eat and eat big."

His best sequence today occurred during a 15-minute period of bright sunshine. That's when he caught a trio of 6-pounders, all out of grass.

Matt Greenblatt has relied on bigger baits so far this week.

"When the sun left and the wind kicked up, the bite just died," he added. "This morning was cooler and the water temp had dipped 7 degrees. It got up to 81 Thursday. Today, it topped out at 77. There was more cloud cover today, but these bass love that sun. When the sun popped out, it was time to do work."

4th: Browne is Dialed In

> Day 2: 5, 20-08 (10, 41-11)

Browne has only seen one or two other boats the first two days and figures he'll be off by himself Saturday, which will allow him to pick over areas he's already fished through and spots he hasn't probed yet.

"I fished a lot of new water today that's not been harassed and have a fair amount left," he said. "I'm fishing for fish that are spawning, but I'm not sight-fishing. It seems like more moved up because I caught more today."

He didn't have a magnum kicker like he did Thursday, but he was culling 2 1/2- to 3-pound fish today.

"Everything I had was quality," he added. "I'm hoping more good things are to come. I think another 20 (pounds) is possible."

This marks the first major tournament Browne has fished on the Harris Chain despite his living about 40 minutes away from Leesburg.

"I have fished a lot of team tournaments here and it's fishing the way it generally fishes," he said. "The offshore hydrilla is something new but the way I'm catching them is the way we've caught them for years. It's a very particular deal I'm looking for and I can duplicate it throughout the body of water I'm fishing."

5th: Young Having a Blast

> Day 2: 5, 23-00 (10, 40-04)

Young turned 54 the other day and he's given himself quite a belated birthday gift - a shot at winning an FLW Tour event in his rookie season.

"I'm as high as a kite right now; I'm excited," Young said. "For being a rookie, I'm pretty happy."

He's spent time in three different lakes - Griffin, Harris and Dora - has identified a few areas where he can be productive.

"Today's was magical and I think tomorrow could be better," he said. "I'm feeling real positive. I feel like I could make the top 10. I think there is a wave coming in."

His fortunes this morning turned around after he made a bait color change. Suddenly, dinks turned into 6-pounders - and better.

"I went through an area I've gone through in the mornings before, but it didn't pan out," he said. "I moved to my second area and had some trails marked from where I'd fished before cut off. I was moving through those waypoints and realized we were catching small fish. I changed colors and on the first cast, I caught a 6 1/2-pounder. It was magical."

He passed a bait to his co-angler who then lost one close to 10 pounds by the boat. Shortly after, Young caught a 7-pounder then lost what he estimated to be a fish close to 14 pounds.

"It was the biggest bass I've seen in my life," he said. "It jumped completely out of the water and looked like a tarpon. It was 2 1/2 minutes before it came up. I was just hanging on."

The Lake Wales, Fla., resident said he used to avoid the Harris Chain, but now can't seem to get enough of it.

"For years, I wouldn't travel here to fish," he said. "Now, I'm a fan again. I love this place. I'm excited about getting on the water again. I'm in a good area and throwing the right thing."

50th: Late Rally for Preuett

> Day 2: 5, 18-13 (10, 27-08)

What was looking like a lost trip to Florida turned into a great salvage job by Brett Preuett today.

He started the day in 144th place and wasn't on pace to improve all that much this morning. He made the decision to move to Lake Griffin, which he knew would limit his fishing time to roughly two hours due to the lock and idle time it takes to get there.

When he arrived, he caught a 3-pounder on a jerkbait near some offshore grass and added a couple smaller keepers.

"I looked at the clock and saw I had about 30 or 40 minutes left," he said. "I saw a stretch I hadn't fished yet and the wind had calmed down enough. I started throwing a homemade topwater prop bait."

He caught decent keepers, then caught an 8-pounder with it to help his cause.

"I had one more 12-incher and culled it with a 2-pounder," he said. "It all happened in the matter of 20 minutes. I went from 5 pounds to 19. I saved a ton of points and got a check. I just wish I was going back out there tomorrow."
