If Bradley Hallman knew that his return to tour-level competition was going to be this good, he certainly wouldn't have waited so long to make it happen.

Hallman caught his second straight 25-pound stringer at Florida's Lake Okeechobee on Friday to build a commanding lead at the midway point of the FLW Tour season opener. Only one angler will be within 16 pounds of his 50-07 total when the weekend portion of the event gets under way.

"It's been pretty awesome so far," he said. "The time off did me some good. This is what I want to do – I'm real passionate about it and it was hard sitting at home and watching everybody else and not being able to play."

Alex Davis, the only other competitor who's exceeded 20 pounds on both days, moved up to 2nd with 41-15 after catching a 20-15 stringer that was just an ounce lighter than his day-1 haul. Charlie Weyer, a veteran from California, rocketed up 55 places to 3rd with a 23-02 stringer that gave him a 34-06 aggregate.

Michael Neal sacked 18-06 to climb from 25th to 4th with a 32-06 total. Shin Fukae rounded out the Top 5 with 32-05 after weighing a 12-02 bag.

Here's a look at the Top 10 at the tournament's halfway juncture, with red numbers in parentheses indicating deficit margin from the leader:

1. Bradley Hallman: 50-07
2. Alex Davis: 41-15 (8-08)
3. Charlie Weyer: 34-06 (16-01)
4. Michael Neal: 32-06 (18-01)
5. Shinichi Fukae: 32-05 (18-02)
6. Brandon McMillan: 32-01 (18-06)
7. Joshua Weaver: 31-00 (19-07)
8. Ryan Chandler: 30-07 (20-00)
9. Billy Shelton III: 30-04 (20-03)
10. Greg Bohannan: 29-08 (20-15)

The dramatically different weather conditions were a hindrance to many in the 169-angler field as the wind blew in excess of 20 mph straight out of the north. The majority of the big bags are coming from southern end of the lake, and the action became a lot more flipping-oriented on day 2 as the cold front pushed the fish tighter to the vegetation.

In addition to Weyer and Neal, Shelton and Bohannan were also newcomers to the Top 10. Shelton weighed 17-11 to move up 39 places and Bohannan sacked 15-15 to gain 19.

Alex Davis is the only angler within 8 1/2 pounds of Hallman.

Jim Tutt and John Devere, who were 8th and 9th, respectively, after day 1, stayed inside the cut despite bags that weighed 7-02 and 8-01. Darrel Robertson (7th to 29th with 5-11 on day 2) and Cody Kelley (10th to 47th, 5-03) were sent packing.

The day-3 weather forecast calls for afternoon showers with a high of 69 degrees and lighter winds (out of the north/northeast at 10 mph). The field will be reduced to the Top 10 following the weigh-in, with the winner determined Sunday based on highest 4-day weight.

Hallman Liked What He Saw

> Day 2: 5, 25-07 (10, 32-01)

Hallman wasn't sure what he was going to find when he made the trip down to South Bay, where he'd caught the previous day's largest bag. He'd entertained the possibility that the wind might've ravaged his best stuff and that he might have to fall back on a place in the north end that held some decent fish in practice.

"I had to at least go look, and when I got in there it wasn't that bad," he said. "Some of the places where I'd caught them yesterday were blown out, but a lot of the water was still fishable, so I fished it."

He did the majority of his day-2 damage in the afternoon.

"At 11 o'clock I only had one fish. I had enough bites, but I wasn't putting them in the boat – I lost several good ones. I think the fish were just sluggish and weren't biting good.

"I was pretty upset about it at first because I wasn't sure how many bites I was going to get. But by I had four that (combined to weigh) about 16 pounds, and I was feeling a lot better."

His bag was topped by a 6-10 bruiser. He also had a 6-pounder, two in the 5-pound class and a 3 1/2.

He stayed with his big rod for most of the day as the conditions made fishing quick-moving baits extremely difficult.

"Today I had to primarily flip because of the winds," he said. "I can't see any (of the fish). There's a lot of guys in there with me, but nobody else was really doing what I'm doing. Some did for awhile, but they didn't stick with it."

2nd: Davis Struck Early

> Day 2: 5, 20-15 (10, 41-15)

Davis returned to the place that had produced his strong sack on day 1 and loaded up again within the first hour. His stringer contained a 7-pounder and a pair of 4 1/2s.

"The tactic was the same, but I upped the size of my line and my weight because it was real tough to deal with in that wind," he said. "I flipped for most of the day. I had one big one on a swimjig, but I couldn't get it out (of the vegetation).

"They seemed to be nipping at the swimjig. They weren't nipping when I was flipping, so I stuck with that."

He lost a decent fish due to a loose drag that would've aided his cause by about a pound. He had no company in his primary area.

"I think the fish are coming to me, but it's really not that big of a place and that's what makes me nervous," he said. "I'm catching 25 keepers a day, but a lot of them are 1 1/2 or 2 pounds, and then all of a sudden I'll just catch a big one. I could catch 8 1/2 or 9 pounds tomorrow, or I could catch 20 pounds again.

"Tenth place right now only has (29-08), so any limit should get me into the Top 10."

4th: Flurry Propelled Neal

> Day 2: 5, 18-06 (10, 32-06)

Neal boated four of his five weigh-in fish during a 1-hour period in the morning.

"I had a little flurry and caught 10 fish in a place where I caught one that I weighed in yesterday," he said. "I changed my rotation up – yesterday I didn't go to that place until 12, and today I went at 8:30 or 9. That made a difference.

He's caught seven of his fish casting and the other three flipping and hasn't lost one yet. His day-2 bag was highlighted by two that each weighed between 4 1/2 and 5 pounds.

Shinichi Fukae said impatience was the primary reason his weight fell off by 8 pounds from day 1.

"I haven't had a real big bite either day, so maybe that'll come tomorrow. I'm not going to try to save anything, and I didn't today. At this point, being 18 pounds behind, I need to get every bite I can and hope I get five big ones.

"It's not unheard of to catch an 8 and a 10 here, and if I could put that together with some 3-pounders I could make up a big chunk of that deficit."

5th: Fukae Got Impatient

> Day 2: 5, 12-02 (10, 32-05)

Fukae's weight was off more than 8 pounds from day 1.

"It was a tougher day and I should've been more patient," he said. "I left my area too early because I couldn't catch anything in the morning. I tried to leave and catch five and then come back, but it was too late.

"Also, with the north wind blowing like that, a little guy like me can't flip much."

He got more than 20 bites and boated about 14 keepers, but none were bigger than 4 1/2 pounds. He was forced to weigh three small ones.

"Tomorrow I'll be more patient and stay there and catch Big Momma," he said. "I'm doing the same stuff that (Hallman) is doing – I saw him a couple of times.

"I just want to beat him on one day."

6th: McMillan Bummed

> Day 2: 5, 9-09 (10, 32-01)

McMillan drove the few blocks to his home following the weigh-in and mulled over his difficult day on his couch.

"The stuff I fished yesterday was unfishable – wind-wise, I couldn't do what I wanted to do," he said. "I scrounged around for a while and then the wind laid off a little, so I went back and that's where I caught the majority of what I had.

"Tomorrow the wind won't be so bad and it'll be from a little bit different direction, so it should be better."

His bag consisted of five fish in the 2-pound class.

"I'm kind of bummed out because I goofed today," he said. "I should've just stayed and beat it out. I thought it was going to be a tougher day, and it was, but I didn't expect (Hallman and Davis) to catch them again like they did.

"I thought I could scrounge around and catch 14 or 15 pounds, and maybe I wouldn't be leading, but I'd give myself a chance. Now I need those guys up top to stumble, but anything can happen."

Notable

> Day 2 stats – 169 anglers, 130 limits (9 fewer than day 1), 9 fours, 14 threes, 11 twos, 2 ones, 3 zeroes (2 more than day 1).

> Jimmy Reese fell from 14th to 36th with a 7-11 bag that amounted to only about half of what he caught on day 1. "I found a pattern in the boat lanes with the Kissimmee grass," he said. "I had two areas, but I just ran out of fish in the areas I had. I kept moving around looking for more places, but I never found it."

> Jay Yelas (151st) has started a third consecutive season with a bomb in Florida, as he weighed just seven small fish over his 2 days on the water. To read his competition wrapup, click here to go to Pro View Reports.
