Talk about a slap in the face.

It seems that’s all it took to get Britt Myers back on track this morning. After trying to boat-flip – and losing – a solid keeper in the 4-pound range right off the bat, he tossed his rod aside in frustration and turned to his marshal and asked him to slap him across the face.

“Please smack me,” Myers recalled saying to his marshal.

His marshal complied, slapping Myers across the face in a therapeutic attempt to get the lost fish out of his mind. The Slap Heard ‘Round Douglas lit the fuse on a marvelous day at the Douglas Lake Bassmaster Elite Series for the South Carolina resident. He proceeded to catch 24-01, the best stringer of the event so far, and seize the lead after day 2 with a 45-02 total.

He wrested the top spot from Aaron Martens, whose weight slipped 6 1/2 pounds from day 1. He did catch 17-06 and holds down 2nd with 41-04. Jeremy Starks walloped 23-01 today and moved into 3rd with 39-02. He’s followed by Dean Rojas, who’s 4th with 38-07. It’s a 4 1/2-pound deficit back to Andy Montgomery and Jeff Kriet, who are tied for 5th with 33-15.

The Top 12 anglers are spread out much wider than they were on day 1. The deficit from Myers to 12th-place Cliff Pace is more than 15 pounds.

Here's a look at the Top 12 through 2 days of competition, with their deficit margin from the leader indicated by red numbers in parentheses:

1. Britt Myers: 45-02
2. Aaron Martens: 41-04 (3-14)
3. Jeremy Starks: 39-02 (6-00)
4. Dean Rojas: 38-07 (6-11)
5 (tie). Andy Montgomery: 33-15 (11-03)
5 (tie). Jeff Kriet: 33-15 (11-03)
7. Ott Defoe: 33-11 (11-07)
8. Brandon Card: 33-01 (12-01)
9. Mike McClelland: 32-04 (12-14)
10. Matt Reed: 31-05 (13-13)
11. Matt Greenblatt: 31-00 (14-02)
12. Cliff Pace: 29-14 (15-04)

The deep-water theme continues to dominate this event and so did the merry go-round spot-swapping that was prevalent on day 1. Some pros noted a few schools of fish may be starting to dissipate or spread out due to the pressure they're getting and that might make them tougher to track on the weekend.

The weather did a 180-degree shift from day 1 as the field blasted off amidst a downpour and thick cloud cover. By mid-morning, though, the clouds dissipated, the rain stopped and the sun emerged. The bite didn’t seem to suffer as the fish continue to relate to the roaming wads of baitfish.

With little in the way of typical fish-holding off-shore structure like brush piles or ledges on the main lake, the fish the leaders are after seem to be holding on long, sloping points that run into the main channel. It’s no secret crankbaits are among the baits of choice this week as the contestants try to trigger reaction strikes from fish that maybe haven’t seen a crankbait running in the 18- to 25-foot range.

Brent Chapman, who was leading the Toyota Tundra Angler of the Year (AOY) standings entering the event, missed his first cut of the season and finished 68th with 20-06. Barring a collapse tomorrow, Randy Howell should be the new leader after the weekend. He's currently in 13th place with a 2-day total of 29-10, just 4 ounces out of the 12-cut.

The Top 50 will fish tomorrow and the Top 12 following day 3 will advance to the final day when the winner will be determined by highest cumulative weight.

Myers Right At Home

> Day 2: 5, 24-01 (10, 45-02)

Despite Douglas fishing small this week, Myers is in his comfort zone, running from spot to spot.

“This is typical for what I do at home at Lake Wylie and Murray,” he said. “I feel like I’m fishing at home. This lake is so small, you just try to run as many spots as you can. I’m not catching many, but today was just one of those great days. It feels like I’m on my home lake without the hometown pressure.”

He didn’t fill his livewell off one spot today, either. He has several areas going and caught his weigh fish off five different spots mixing in three different baits. He said he had one good day of practice, but he knew that’s how it was going to be targeting the deeper fish chasing bait wads.

“I know I can go out there tomorrow and catch them,” he said. “I just need to be patient.”

He’s swapping areas with other leaders, but he’s not sure how key the areas are to their patterns.

“I think I’m fishing (shallower) than the other guys,” he said.

He had a limit before 7 this morning, but his best bites seem to be coming later in the day. Following his runner-up finish at Bull Shoals 2 weeks ago, he’s just hoping to keep his momentum going.

“I didn’t feel any more confident,” he said. “I’ve seen people get on rolls before, but this feels no different for me. Things are just happening.”

2nd: Martens Drawing Plenty Of Attention

> Day 2: 5, 17-06 (10, 41-04)

Martens believes the fish are wising up now and that may explain why the schools are beginning to splinter off into smaller groups. Despite nearly a 4-pound deficit, he’s confident he still has a shot at the win, which would be his third Elite Series triumph.

“The fishing has changed quite a bit,” he said. “The fish are getting pressured and they’re getting smart. They know what’s going on. They’re on to us, big time.”

He had a flotilla of spectator boats around him on day 1 and again today, in addition to fishing around other competitors. He’s certain the traffic is affecting the fishing.

Aaron Martens backed up his 23-14 catch from day-1 with 17-06 today.

“I had like 30 boats on me this morning at least until noon,” he said. “It seemed like it was a hindrance. It didn’t help the bite. They were kind of close the first two spots and I think it affected them. They started holding back after the third or fourth spots. I shouldn’t have that many boats tomorrow. I think Britt will have all of the boats so it might affect him. We’ll see.”

His two starting spots today were occupied when he pulled up on them so he wasn’t able to work on them the way he wanted. He had a limit today by 10, which was about 3 hours later than day 1.

“I joined them on it, but I couldn’t get the right line on it,” he added. ”I went there this afternoon and lost a big one. It still has some good fish on it.”

He said electronics are playing a pivotal part in his success this week, but he’s made a conscious decision to keep his HydroWave unit turned off.

“They’re attracted to noise and they’re deep,” he said. “I don’t want to draw them away from where they’re at. I am trying to be as silent as I can. I don’t want them to know I’m there. I turned it on a few times in practice just to try it, but I’m making such long casts that it might not matter. I might turn it on tomorrow, who knows.”

3rd: Fish Coming To Starks

> Day 2: 5, 23-01 (10, 39-02)

Starks made, at most, 10 casts in deep water during practice because he decided he’d get on a school or two and follow them around and figure out how to catch them during the tournament.

After leaving the water early on day 1 because of a dizzy spell, a condition that’s plagued him in recent years and kept him on the sidelines all of last season, he hammered his best stringer of 2012 to pull into contention.

“It didn’t surprise me,” he said. “It’s all about the bait being there when you’re there. The fish can be there and if the bait’s not, you won’t catch them. It’s a perfect example of getting yourself some good electronics and graphing the right areas. I didn’t talk to anyone, didn’t get any help and no one gave me any waypoints.”

He estimated he caught 50 keepers today, including a double on one cast. A pair of 4-pounders anchored his bag. He picked his fish off one area with a crankbait where he said crowding wasn’t an issue.

“You never know what tomorrow will bring,” he said. “As of right now, when I left the fish were loading up. It seemed like there were more moving in. The school got bigger as the day went on.”

4th: Rojas Feeling Confident

> Day 2: 5, 22-00 (10, 38-07)

Rojas was the runner-up to Rick Clunn at the Douglas Megabucks tournament back in 2001 and he’s maintained a fondness for the lake over the years. He returned to the ramp early today because he was nursing a fish and he didn’t want to incur a dead-fish penalty. He was the first angler to the scales and set the bar pretty high.

“I knew they were in there,” he said after weighing 5 1/2 pounds more than he did on day 1. “I lost one key fish yesterday and today, I did the same thing and put them in the boat.”

He didn’t feel the early-morning rain had any sort of negative impact on the bite. He’s also not concerned about boat traffic in his areas.

Dean Rojas isn't concerned about pressure in his areas.

“I’m not worried about (fishing) pressure. I have enough areas,” he said. “I’ve got everything going -- all three water columns. I felt really good going into it. This place has treated me well in the past.”

8th: Card Had Fewer Bites Today

> Day 2: 5, 17-00 (10, 33-01)

Coming into the event, Elite Series rookie Brandon Card’s name was mentioned right alongside Ott Defoe’s and David Walker’s as shoo-in favorites this week, due to their Tennessee roots.

All three have delivered by making the weekend with Defoe and Card holding down spots in the Top 10. It’s been a fun week for Card, who continues to impress at each turn.

“I’m just trying to have a good time,” he said. “I didn’t put a lot of pressure on myself. I’m not really a local, per se. I fish this place maybe three or four times a year. If we were in my backyard like at Norris Lake, I’d probably feel a lot more pressure.”

Fishing off shore doesn’t exactly suit his tastes, but since he does have a history on Douglas, his comfort level is a bit higher this week. He didn’t catch the quantity he did on day 1, but the quality was actually better today.

“Yesterday, I caught a lot more fish,” he said. “I thought today was going to be that type of a day where I’d be balance-beaming them and culling tons of fish for ounces on every catch. I think I only had eight keepers today so it was a little tougher.

“I think my timing was a little off today. Yesterday, pretty much any spot I wanted to hit, I could hit it. Today, there’d be somebody sitting on it. It was that type of deal.”

He anticipates crowding to be an issue, at least for him, again tomorrow.

“All of the guys I saw fishing the stuff I wanted to fish made the cut,” he said. “All it takes is to get into a spot at a different time. It’s weird how it works out here.”

Even though he’s fished for them both days, he’s not targeting suspended fish, and might scrap that part of his program tomorrow.

“I’ve fished for them both days in 40 feet of water and I just can’t get them to bite. I feel like I’m wasting time out there,” he added. “Tomorrow, I might not even go to those areas at all because all of my weigh fish came a little shallower.”

86th: Zaldain Still Learning

> Day 2: 5, 7-03 (10, 17-13)

Chris Zaldain thought he had Douglas figured out after a pre-practice scouting trip in March.

“We hammered on them,” he said. “I had waypoints on every point in the lake and I knew the water would come up so I outlined the points that were lower. When we came back for practice, I went to the same spots I had waypoints for and they were holding fish.”

He was able to pull 4- to 6-pound fish using a flutter spoon dropped through wads of bait. The problem was once the rest of the field arrived for official practice, those working on deep-water patterns found the same points.

“This lake is so small, everyone saw the same fish,” he said. “It was just a giant merry go-round. We’d just leap-frog each other and fish the same stuff.”

After cashing a check from his 30th-place finish at Bull Shoals, it’s back to the drawing board for the Elite Series rookie.

“I’ve learned a lot so far, but it’s been a rough first half,” he said. “I’m going to fly home and regroup. It’s been a huge learning experience, but I feel like I have the talent to hang with these guys. It’s just there are so many little things you have to learn to hang with this group.”

89th: Sixth Fish DQ’d Parrish’s Day-1 Catch

> Day 2: 5, 15-14 (5, 15-14)

Russell Parrish came into the week in 32nd place in the AOY standings, firmly in position to earn a Bassmaster Classic berth and an invite to fish the Elite Series next year. Things were starting to round into form for the second-year Elite Series pro from Texas, who had a marvelous practice this week and was certain he was on cut-worthy fish or better.

However, upon discovering a fish in his livewell Thursday night, well after the weigh-in and not until he was back at his hotel prepping for day 2, his day-1 weight (9-06) was disqualified. After some consideration, he reported the finding to tournament director Trip Weldon, who informed him his weight would be thrown out, but that he’d be able to fish on day 2.

“I basically thought I had a dead fish in there,” Parrish said. “I thought it was a shad or a perch that had been regurgitated, but then I looked in there and saw what it was. It was my big fish, too. I remember at the weigh-in thinking I had a bigger fish. I did. I found it 3 hours later.

“Believe me, I didn’t know the circumstances and I didn’t know what was going to happen. I thought it was going to be a 2-pound penalty. Wrong is wrong. I don’t like cheaters and I don’t want to be considered one. I had a real hard time hitting the send button on my phone to call Trip.

“I didn’t want people to think I’m a cheater. That was something that was rolling around in my mind.”

Since his discovery meant he had six fish in his livewell and he didn’t present all of the legal fish in his possession at check-in, he had to forfeit his catch for the day, pursuant to Elite Series rule C16. A 2-pound penalty is enforced if the violation occurs and is reported at check-in or during the course of the day as was the case with John Murray on day 1.

“I think it’s a bad rule and I think it should be changed because for someone like me to take their life’s savings and go out on tour and fish hard and put in all the time and effort,” Parrish said. “The only reason I don’t have my weight was because I didn’t bring it to the (bump) table because I didn’t know I had it in my boat.”

He thinks the error occurred early in the morning on day 1 when he ran into a flurry of bites right away while fishing a shallow point. He missed a 3 1/2-pounder, but then got bit on virtually every cast for a 10-minute span.

“By missing the first fish and then getting the flurry of bites after that, maybe I got rattled so I think it probably happened during the first part of the day,” he said. “I just failed to cull a fish.”

After discovering the additional fish, he also called his marshal and alerted him to what had happened. His marshal was convinced Parrish didn’t have six fish in his box.

“He thought I’d been sabotaged,” Parrish said. “He said, ‘There’s no way. I watched you the whole day.’ It was a catastrophic mistake.

“I respect the rule and I respect B.A.S.S. and I respect Trip. He’s cut and dry and he has to be. There’s no way around it. The way I’m looking at it, it may have cost me $10,000, and a chance at the Classic. I’m pretty sure that’s gone. And the Angler of the Year points I would’ve gotten, I might not get the Top-50 bonus money and that could cost me next year. I just hope I can overcome it.”

Notable

> Day 2 stats -- 99 anglers, 90 limits (1 fewer than yesterday), 1 four, 4 threes, 2 twos, 1 one, 1 zero.

> On a day that saw Kevin VanDam match his Elite Series record of 16 consecutive 50-cuts made, Edwin Evers had his run of eight straight Top-50 finishes snapped. He finished 63rd. The last time Evers didn't fish the weekend was last April at Lake Pickwick where he finished 62nd.
