How tough is Lake Murray fishing right now? It took slightly better than 10 pounds a day to make the Top 50. Day-1 leader Jami Fralick limped in with 8-12, and Steve Kennedy, who began the day in 5th, crumbled with a two-fish bag.

A few guys caught 'em, most notably defending Murray champ Fred Roumbanis, who posted an 18-04 limit – the best bag of the 2 days so far. It pushed Roumbanis all the way from 34th into the lead position with 2 days left to fish.

Roumbanis leads Casey Ashley, who likewise caught a comparatively good sack (15-04), which improved his standing by five spots.

Dean Rojas mounted a huge comeback. Rojas began the day in 56th, but caught 15-10 to settle into 16th, where he's just 5 pounds behind Roumbanis.

Similar story for Jason Williamson, whose 15-02 pushed him up 35 spots to 18th.

Davy Hite, who called Lake Murray home for most of his life, sits in 3rd – a spot behind his day-1 standing.

Along with Fralick and Kennedy, John Crews fell off the map after a 6-pound day. Crews did end the day nine spots inside the cut. Kennedy, however, is headed home.

David Walker was last into the cut, Randy Howell was first out (an ounce behind Walker).

Toyota Trucks B.A.S.S. Angler of the Year (AOY) leader Alton Jones posted his worst finish since summer 2007 and leaves the door open for challengers Terry Scroggins and Kevin VanDam, both of whom made the cut. Kennedy was 4th in the race, but despite his tumble today, gets helps from Jones in the form of Jones' poor finish.

The Top 50 fish tomorrow, then the field cuts to the Top 12 for the final day. Here's a look at the current Top 20 (actually Top 21, since there's a weight tie for 20th). Total weight is followed by distance from leader in red.

Conditions today were still, sunny and stiflingly hot.

A little about what's happening out there:

  • Three familiar faces sit atop the leaderboard. Roumbanis, of course, is defending champ. Ashley calls Clarks Hill (another South Carolina blueback fishery) his home lake and scored three consecutive Top 10s there. Hite, meanwhile, grew up at Murray, and Brian Snowden finished 6th here in 2008.

  • The blueback-herring spawn is clearly reaching an end. Most feel that's why the morning bite's so short – the few remnant spawning herring pull out quickly when the sun rises. If that's true, no amount of wind will extend the morning bite. Instead, the overall bite's probably in full transition to summer.

  • A 4-pound bite takes a pro a long way right now, but a limit's vital (and by no means easy). Ashley only caught six keepers today. Roumbanis and Hite, on the other hand, worked a daylong bite , which could put tomorrow in their favor. On the same topic, an ultra-tough bite can typically help locals, and Hite's certainly not complaining about the conditions.

  • The out-of-nowhere rise of pros like Roumbanis, Rojas and Williamson today prove that no one in the Top 20 is out of it. There's every possibility an area of the lake could finish its transition by tomorrow and a good summer bite will develop. Someone around 20th could make a very strong run with back-to-back 18-pound bags the next 2 days.

Tomorrow's weather calls for 14 mph winds out of the southwest with scattered thunderstorms, although today's weather called for winds to 12 mph and barely a breeze could be felt. Coupled with 90-degree daytime highs, the weather was obscenely hot for mid-May.

    Roumbanis Worked it All Day

    > Day 2: 5, 18-04

Roumbanis received the dreaded striper bites this morning, but did establish a pattern that held up throughout the day.

"Man, this is awesome," he said. "I weighed in and went and got gas in my boat and went back to the weigh-in. To be leading the thing? I'm just absolutely blown away. It was such a big jump. I just had one of those days and I caught a good number of fish. Every time I'd hook a fish, I'd say 'Please be a bass, please be a bass.'"

After 2 hours of stripers, he connected with blacks and in an hour caught a 15-pound bag, anchored by a 5-05. Surprisingly, the action picked up after that.

He said his pattern held up from spot to spot and produced a fish every time he put the trolling motor down. His philosophy, he said, isn't to focus on quality. He wants to catch as many bass as he possibly can – a view that's somewhat different from a lot of pros who lamented the lack of a morning big-fish bite.

About his daylong bite, he said: "It's more of a pattern. There's some windows throughout the day that are definitely better than other times, and I'm paying real close attention to the time of day and where the sun is. I'm pretty much catching fish all day. My attitude for this lake is to go through numbers of fish. I'm just trying to figure out how I can catch the most fish to where I'll have a decent bag at the end of the day.

Casey Ashley only caught six today, and they were all morning fish.

"Just like the frog last time when I won: I was getting a ridiculous amount of blowups, and it was the numbers that ultimately led to a good bag. So I'm just trying to figure out how to catch the most fish I can and I have yet to hit the same spot twice. I don't even have a gameplan of where to start tomorrow. It's a lot of fun."

    2nd: Just Six For Ashley

    > Day 2: 5, 15-04

Ashley's one of the pros who thrives on blueback bites, and traditionally, the tougher the bite, the better his finish. And his bite was certainly tough. He only caught six keepers today and boated no keepers after 10:00.

So he was able to work the morning blueback bite, but had nothing working after that.

About his day 2, he said: "I'm happy with it. To be honest, going into today, I was kind of scared I wouldn't even catch a fish. It's tough, I can tell you that. I caught a 5-pounder first thing this morning, so that kind of took a lot of pressure off, and I felt confident I'd catch five. That 5-pounder really allowed me to keep running the herring deal – trying to catch a couple good ones.

"It didn't really work out that way," he added. "I did have some blowups – big fish that didn't get the bait. I think tomorrow if we get a little wind, a little clouds, it's going to be nasty (good)."

He noted too that in the morning, he's got a series of five points and he's hopping around them in rotation. He sat on one "forever" this morning until the fish "finally came up schooling." They didn't bite him though.

    3rd: Hite Likes it Tough

    > Day 2: 5, 13-00

Hite may prefer his steaks be tender, but when it comes to an event – especially one at his home lake – the tougher the better.

"I would absolutely like to win this week," he said. "My whole family's at the weigh-in, and I saw a lot of my friends at the weigh-in and out on the water – some people I used to fish against that I hadn't seen in quite a while. It's a really special week and nothing could make me happier than to be able to hold that trophy up onstage at my home lake.

"And I'd rather have a tough tournament. I really like the way things are unfolding."

As noted, he's catching fish all day. He didn't provide as many details as Roumbanis, but did note that he caught 12 or 14 keepers today – twice Ashley's total, albeit less weight.

    Photo: B.A.S.S./Gary Tramontina

"It was tough," Hite said. "It's really hot and the herring bite's going away. I think that's hurting a lot of the guys who are trying to do that. Hopefully I'll make a few adjustments and tomorrow I can do a little better than 13 pounds. I know they're out there, that's for sure."

About the potential for at least some wind tomorrow, he said: "They were calling for 10 to 15 today, and it blew like 2 to 4. I certainly can't predict the wind, but I don't think wind's going to make as much difference as people think. Because we're on the tail end of the blueback spawn, it might make it a little better, but it's not going to make all the difference in the world like some people think."

    4th: Snowden Helped By 4s

    > Day 2: 5, 13-01

So far, Snowden's living off the strength of his morning bite, which produced a 4-pounder each of the first 2 days. After the morning, he struggles.

"I can catch them until about noon," he said. "After that, I really don't know. You can see them – they're still up shallow. It's just been so dang calm. When we were here in 2008, we had really strong winds most of the time, and we just haven't had that this week. So I think if we had some wind, they'd continue to bite longer – maybe not a reaction bait, but a dropshot or something."

He noted there are still a few fish on beds, but he thinks most of the bass are shallow to hunt bluebacks. Based on the bass-spawning activity he saw, he does plan to switch gears tomorrow and sight-fish after the morning bite ends.

"Morning's my big key," he added. "If I don't catch a couple good ones in the morning, I'll definitely struggle to break 10 pounds."

    7th: Ike Lacks a 4

    > Day 2: 5, 13-02

Mike Iaconelli, who began the day in 17th, joked that he might go down to 2-pound test today. He didn't go to 2, but he did throw 4. That shows just how clear the water is and how tight-lipped the fish are.

He has yet to catch a kicker, and that's why he's about 4 pounds off the lead pace.

He said: "I'm sure you've heard this from other people – it's a good lake, but a frustrating lake. I'm basically fishing the blueback bite, like a lot of the guys, and the mornings have been key for me. That's when I'm getting the majority of my bites. After that, it's a grind.

"I've seen well over 20 to 30 pounds of fish swimming that I couldn't catch," he added. "It's a frustrating thing. But I have been able to generate some bites in the morning and that's a good thing. Yet my big fish both days has been 3 1/2 pounds. I need to figure out how to catch one of those big ones."

He added that after his West Point disappointment last week (66th), he feels he's accomplished "a little revenge."

About tomorrow he said: "I'll try some more techniques. I have to believe there's something that'll make these fish eat after the sun comes out."

    16th: Rojas Nails 5 1/2 at Noon

    > Day 2: 5, 15-10

The day's big fish helped pushed Rojas up 40 spots and he's now in position to threaten for a win. Another example of just how critical the 4- to 5-pound bite is this week.

Shortly after weigh-in, he told BassFan: "It feels great – absolutely great. I had a 5-pounder today, but I only caught five keepers. I caught three early, then caught my last one at about 1:00. I knew I was going to catch them – it was just a matter of getting the bites. It's a grind more than anything for me right now."

He caught the 5 1/2 at high noon.

About his fishing style, he said: "In the mornings it's kind of run-and-gun. The rest of the day, I'm fishing whatever looks good. I've got a little pattern going and I've been trying to make it work, but it got real slow for me this afternoon. So I spent the afternoon just trying to find new water and getting ready for tomorrow. I stumbled across the pattern yesterday afternoon and caught a couple key fish on it today. So I was trying to find more water just like it."

    Notable

    > Day 2 stats: 99 anglers, 77 limits, 12 fours, 2 threes, 3 twos, 1 one, 4 zeroes.

    > Severe thunderstorms rolled through the area tonight after weigh-in.

    > Marty Robinson, fishing his home state, sits in 11th. He caught a healthy 14 1/2 pounds today, and said he had a shot at a similar bag yesterday, but didn't execute. "These fish are biting kind of funny. We haven't had great conditions for what I'm doing, which causes the fish to nip at the bait. I'm waiting for one of those big storms to roll in. When it gets nasty, it gets nasty (good) out there."

    > Tommy Biffle made the cut in 14th and noted: "That's a good thing. I've had a lot of weekends off this year."

    > Kevin VanDam (46th): "It was a real tough day for me. Yesterday I thought I had a little something figured out to catch some bigger fish. Every time a caught a fish today it was a little one with some big ones following it."

    > Kennedy (60th) said he lost four fish and in general "just didn't get the bites – I missed the herring bite both mornings."

    > Brent Chapman never could build morning momentum and both days, his first fish came at 9:30 or 10:00. He finished 63rd. For his day-2 report, click here to go On Tour With the BassFan Big Sticks.

    > Skeet Reese has now slid so far from his blistering pace of last year that he needs to win one of the final two events to make the Bassmaster Classic. He finished 77th today. "I was chasing those herring fish and it's killing me without a breath of wind out there. I had some big bites in practice, but it's all changed. I didn't quite adjust enough. This pretty much shoots my season."
