California's Charlie Weyer is probably best known to BassFans as a former Bassmaster Tour and Elite Series pro, and part-time FLW Tour pro. He no longer fishes at the tour level – he's back in the West, where he's concentrating on the Strens, FLW Series, and his business in Hollywood.

But his name came back into

the spotlight last weekend, when he won the Columbia River Western FLW Series. With the win, he pocketed $100,000 and completed the East-West cycle, with a significant win in both regions. His prior win was the 2004 Smith Lake (Alabama) Bassmaster Tour.

At the Columbia, he and runner-up Clayton Meyer fished within talking distance of one another, but the difference was the odd fish Weyer picked up in other places – notably near the locks and the launch.

He weighed an average of 13-plus-pounds of smallmouths every day, and outpaced Meyer by a final 3-13 margin.

Here's how he did it.

Practice

Weyer actually practiced twice for the event. The first time was a pre-practice trip with his wife, prior to the off-limits.

His goal in pre-practice was to explore the Boardman Pool, because he's "always had outstanding practices there." He spent 3 of his 4 pre-practice days there, and found a school with some fish in the 3- to 4-pound class.

"At the time, they were blowing up on baby salmon," he said. "I thought, 'Wow, that's a really good spot right there.' If I wasn't lucky, I figured I could catch 10 to 12 pounds there."

He checked the spot again during official practice. Then, on a different part of the river, he noticed a grassbed while he was eating a sandwich. He saw that it came up from 21 to 5 or 6 feet. He put down his sandwich, picked up a rod, and on his first cast stuck a 3-pounder. He quickly caught a 2 1/2, then another 2 1/2.

"I ran that whole ridge for 2 miles from there," he said. "I got 25 or 30 bites on a tube."

Days 1 & 2

> Day 1: 5, 13-15
> Day 2: 5, 15-02 (10, 29-01)

On day 1, Weyer stopped for a few quick casts at a spot, blanked, then headed for the lock en route to his hot salmon fish. He locked through, reached his area and caught a 3-pounder on his first cast. He then quickly caught a 2 1/2 and a 1 1/2 – all on a Carolina-rigged lizard. After that, the bite died.

He spent 2 more hours there with only a couple of little bites, then decided to move back to his grassbed.

"I ran over there at 10:30 and missed a fish on my first cast," he said. "The next cast I caught a 4-pounder, the next cast a 3-pounder, and a 3-pounder on the cast after that. My partner and I lit them up. We probably caught 30 keepers."

He left at 12:30, gassed up, then headed for the lock. "I sat at the lock for half an hour," he noted. "My heart was beating so hard – I just wanted to get through that lock, because there was a lot of barge traffic."

He made it through and reached weigh-in with 13-15, which put him in 9th place. Meyer was the day-1 leader with 16-13.

Weyer described day 2 as "even more amazing than the first day," because when he ran to the lock and waited to enter, he made a random cast to a rockpile and whacked a 3 1/2-pounder.

"I don't know for what reason I threw on that section," he said. "I'd never fished the spot before. It bit a 4" curlytail sandworm from Jerry's Bait."

When he reached his grassbed area, he again missed a fish on his first cast, but quickly followed up with 4-pounder on the next. It went dry for the next 20 minutes, until he hooked a 3-pounder on the lizard. A little later, he hooked a 4-pounder on a tube, but as his partner went to net it, it jumped over the net and shook loose.

"On the next cast, I threw back out, caught a 2 1/2, and then it basically died," he said. "I couldn't catch anything. So I ran back up, got fuel, and went to a wingdam I found in practice. It was just south of the launch ramp. It wasn't on any map or GPS coordinates – you could just see ripples on the water."

On the first cast he ever threw to the wingdam, he stuck a 3-pounder, and that was the end of the day. He weighed 15-02 – the heaviest sack of the day – and moved into the lead.

Days 3 & 4

> Day 1: 5, 14-08
> Day 2: 5, 9-08 (20, 53-01)

Weyer started day 3 at the lock, but fished a different rockpile and caught a 3-pounder on the sandworm. On the very next cast, he caught a 1 1/2.

"Then a barge came in and they wouldn't let us lock through," he said. "I was waiting for over an hour, and everyone was thinking, 'We're done.' Clayton Meyer was looking to turn around, but I knew I had to make the run every day no matter what. I didn't have any choice – all the big fish were down there.

"Then a second barge came in, but the lockmaster said we could come in and go around to the front of the barge. All my stress went away."

He reached his grassbed with just an hour and a half to fish. For the third straight day, he missed a fish on his first cast, but then boated a 4-pounder. So he had a 4 and a 3 in the well, and quickly caught a 2 1/2-pounder.

At that point, the bite died and he ran to gas up and head back through the lock.

"When I came out of the lock, I fished the wingdam and stuck a 2 1/2 on the first cast," he noted. "I was like, 'This cannot be happening.' Then my partner threw out and caught a 4-pounder on the next cast."

On top of that, with just 10 minutes of fishing left, he caught a 3-pounder next to the launch ramp. It was almost too much to believe, and he described the feeling as "surreal."

"I was in awe," he added. "How many times in your career do you make your first cast and a catch a big one in three or four different areas? I hadn't been in the zone like that for 3 or 4 years. It was like it didn't matter where I casted."

He weighed 14-08 for the day, and led by 5 pounds with 1 day left to fish.

He didn't catch any lock-fish on day 4, but with no barge traffic, he had more time to fish his grassbed than he'd had yet.

"On my third cast I caught a little 13-incher, then a 14-incher, then a 2 1/2," he said. "Then it just died. There were 3-foot rollers coming over the front of the boat."

He decided to run to his salmon-fish, and quickly caught a 2 1/2-pounder there. That gave him four fish at about 10:00. The bite then died there too, and he started to fish safe – he ran to a nearby launch ramp to try for some release fish. But clearer senses soon prevailed.

"I started thinking about what I was doing," he said. "I was fishing to protect the lead, not to win. I wasn't fishing smart. I knew I had to run back to where the big fish were – to the (grassbed)."

When he returned, he caught a 2 1/2-pounder on his first cast, then a 3-pounder on the next, but it jumped off at the trolling motor. He rebounded with another 2 1/2-pounder on the very next cast though.

"I guess when it's your time, it's your time," he said. "What happened only happens when you win, I guess."

Weyer's key bait was a Carolina-rigged Zoom lizard.

Winning Pattern Notes

About his grassbed area, he said: "There's an abandoned train trestle there with scattered rockpiles and grass. What I figured out was, I guess the yellow perch migrate in and out of the harbor there. The wind blew so hard in practice the perch stacked up there, and the smallmouths were gorging themselves.

"I noticed (in New York) at Oneida and Champlain, if there were yellow perch, there were big smallmouths. But I didn't know before this tournament that there were yellow perch in the Columbia River system."

Also notable was that he fished from shallow to deep, and he caught all but maybe one fish in the area with a lizard.

Winning Gear Notes

> Lizard gear: 7'3" medium-heavy fast-action Powell 734C rod, Shimano Curado casting reel, 12-pound Seaguar Carbon Pro fluorocarbon (main line and 3' leader), 3/0 Roboworm ReBarb hook, 5" Zoom lizard (green-pumpkin).

> He used two different weights to Carolina-rig the lizard. He threw a 1/2-ounce Bullet Weights egg sinker along shoreline rock, which was more jagged. Out in the river, and along the outside of the grass where the rock was more rounded and less snaggy, he threw a 1/2-ounce Penetrater tungsten weight.

> Tube gear: 7' medium-light Powell 702 rod, Team Daiwa-S 2500CU spinning reel, 8-pound Carbon Pro, 1/4-ounce homemade jighead, Jerry's Bait tube (old ugly) and 4 1/2" Gary Yamamoto tube (green-pumpkin).

The Bottom Line

> Main factor in his success – "Having the guts to run 50 miles, lock through every day, and not give up on the area down there. Also, not being scared to run through rough water."

> Performance edge – "My Powell rods. With the sensitivity in the rods, I can feel everything on the bottom. They're awesome. Also having the right boat and motor package to make the run – a Mercury 250 Pro XS and Triton 21X."

Notable

> Weyer said his goal is to again fish at the tour level. "I'm trying to go full-force and qualify for the FLW Tour. I want to support the West Coast with the FLW Series and Strens, and I want to be with my family. When I was traveling back (East) with (BASS), I didn't have enough time to be with my family. And I couldn't run my Hollywood business. I need 6 more years there in the craft union before I can retire."

> He's currently 29th in the Western FLW Series points with one event left to fish. If he can finish the year in the Top 30, he'll qualify for the East/West Fish-Off, which qualifies 30 pros for the 2008 Forrest Wood Cup.
