The fishing seems to be getting better at Florida's Lake Toho and Kissimmee Chain. The 50-boat Bassmaster Elite Series field caught eight bags over 12 pounds today, two of which were over 19. That sets up the possibility of a 20-plus-pound bag tomorrow, and makes the whole thing look that much tighter.

Brent Chapman defended his lead position today with a workmanlike 12-09 limit that brought his 2-day total to 42-03.

So far he's shared his area with Alton Jones – the two helped each other during the event – but since Jones didn't make the cut, Chapman has it to himself tomorrow. In his favor, he has yet to weigh less than 10 pounds, whereas Ben Matsubu (in 2nd) limped in with 7-10 yesterday.

Matsubu came back with a vengeance today, though, and weighed a 17-08 limit that moved him up from 7th. He trails Chapman by exactly 1 pound, but he's largely fishing a single 50-yard stretch, and just doesn't know what's left there.

Rookie Glenn Delong began the day in 4th, caught 12-03, and moved up a spot to 3rd. He's fishing Kissimmee, and his best spot's been worked heavily.

Bill Smith, Jr. led day 1, slipped to 2nd yesterday, and fell another two spots to 4th today. He'd likely be third, and only 3 to 4 pounds behind Chapman, but he dumped a 2-pound fish at the dock during bag-up. And that was after he'd learned of a rule violation, which resulted in a $500 penalty.

He remains hopeful, though, especially because there's wind in the forecast, which he desperately needs.

Bradley Hallman rounds out the Top 5. A 13-02 limit moved him up five spots from yesterday.

Here's the Top 12 anglers who made the cut and will fish tomorrow. Note that total weight is followed by distance from leader in red.

1. Brent Chapman: 42-03
2. Ben Matsubu: 41-03 (1-00)
3. Glenn Delong: 37-12 (4-07)
4. Bill Smith, Jr.: 35-12 (6-07)
5. Bradley Hallman: 35-10 (6-09)
6. Scott Rook: 34-11 (7-08)
7. Cliff Pace: 33-06 (8-13)
8. James Niggemeyer: 33-05 (8-14)
9. Mike Wurm: 32-12 (9-07)
10. Terry Scroggins: 32-09 (9-10)
11. Jon Bondy: 31-03 (11-00)
12. Aaron Martens: 30-09 (11-10)

Although Matsubu obviously has the best shot to catch Chapman, anyone in the Top 12 could sack 25 pounds tomorrow. Especially since the forecast calls for 12 mph winds tomorrow. The water's been hot and stagnant, but a solid dose of wind should mix the surface and put the fish back on the feed.

One potential weather snag could be an isolated thunderstorm. The lock to Kissimmee shuts down if there's an electrical storm, so there's always the chance those pros fishing Kissimmee could miss check-in.

Terry Scroggins went from 2nd after day 1, to 3rd yesterday, to 10th today. He said he ran out of fish.

Those who moved up into the Top 12 cut include Scott Rook, whose 19-06 was the heaviest sack so far. He began the day in 28th and is now 6th.

James Niggemeyer also climbed big-time. His 19-01 limit vaulted him from 43rd to 8th.

Aaron Martens, with 14-10, moved up from 20th into the final cut position.

Gerald Swindle was first out of the cut.

Those who fell out of the Top 12 today include: Pete Ponds (5th to 16th), Bernie Schultz (8th to 15th), and Alton Jones (12th to 36th).

Skeet Reese, with his 14th-place finish, clinched the BASS Angler of the Year (AOY) title. For the story about his win, click here.

Chapman Alone Now

Chapman, of course, likes his position, but sees Matsubu in his rearview mirror.

About leading with 1 day left to fish, he said: "I'm definitely tickled, but I just wish I had a bigger cushion. We're not going to complain though. Today went very well – better than I'd expected.

"I'm still a little haunted by a couple of fish I lost yesterday, but the exciting thing is I have the area all to myself tomorrow," he added. "And with the type of area it is, it should keep replenishing itself. I think if I can get a few of the right bites, I have a shot at winning."

Ben Matsubu hopes 'nice guys' don't finish last.

The key to his area, which is on Kissimmee, is there's current, which he thinks is drawing fish into the area. Today it was "tough in there" though – he said it was due to a lack of wind.

"Wind will probably help everybody tomorrow," he noted. "It tends to make the fish a little more active. It's almost like the water's stagnant – it was 95 degrees and dead-calm. It's miserable for us, and the fish."

About what a win tomorrow would mean for him, he said: "It would just be a huge way to cap off the season. I already made the (Bassmaster) Classic, so that's exciting, but you don't get a lot of opportunities to win, and you have to capitalize when you get the opportunity.

"It's been several years, and I feel like it's my time to win again. (His last tour-level win was the Top Gun Championship in 2005.–Ed.) You watch all your peers, especially the guys around my age, and when you start looking, just about everybody in my age category (he's 35) has won in the last year or two. I feel it's my turn to win one."

2nd: Matsubu Was 'Nice Guy'

Several co-anglers have outfished their pros this week, which often happens on open-water patterns. Harry Potts, who won the co-angler division, caught 20 pounds behind Davy Hite on day 1, and Hite missed qualifying for the Bassmaster Classic. Potts caught 14-11 behind Matsubu today.

And yesterday, Matsubu lent his co-angler Mary Delgado (wife of Byron Velvick) a key crankbait, and she whacked 14-07. That was about twice what he weighed that day.

He did weigh 17-08 today, but one of Delgado's big fish yesterday would have pushed him well into the lead.

"I'm hoping being a nice guy yesterday doesn't cost me $100,000," Matsubu said. "I tied on the crank (for her), and she caught them. I was happy to do it. I just hope nice guys don't get to finish last."

About trailing Chapman, he said: "He's flipping, and flipping's a good way to catch some big ones. I sat next to him in the meeting, and kept an eye on him the whole time. We were playing head-games the whole time.

"I'm confident I can catch another 15 pounds. I believe I can catch a limit of 3-pounders, but I just hope (the area) will last. I'm catching a lot of fish in one 50-yard stretch, and I don't know if it's starting to peter out or not."

He's fishing Toho, so there are no lock worries, and his biggest fish today was a 7-04.

His gut feeling tells him he can win – he did it last year at the Harris Chain to earn his Elite Series berth at the Wildcard Qualifier – but he also knows it's Florida, which is notoriously cruel.

"I'm hoping I can do it again," he said. "But fishing in Florida scares me. I won't lose sleep over it though. I'll go out and do the same thing I did the last 2 days and whatever happens, happens."

Rookie Glenn Delong met his primary goal today – he requalified for the Bassmaster Elite Series.

3rd: Delong Met Goal

Delong's fishing Kissimmee, and feels he only needs to catch a 4-poudner in his limit to have a shot to win.

"I need to catch about 18 pounds tomorrow," he said. "I feel good. I've had a strong week, and a really good tournament.

"I've worked my area over pretty good, and tomorrow I just have to go there, work it over more, and seine it out."

Aside from that one main area, he has a single mat where he thinks he can catch a keeper – he lost one there the first day.

He noted too that making the cut is a big boost in confidence. It comes at the final event of a season that's kept him near the bottom of the AOY race. He entered the event at 92nd in the race, and needed to reach 84th in order to automatically requalify for next year's Elite Series. He did that.

"I came down here and had a job to do, and I did what I had to do," he said. "I guess the rest is up to where the cards fall."

4th: Smith Hopeful

As noted, Smith lost a 2-pounder over the side of the boat during bag-up for weigh-in. That was a mental blow, but in all, he's happy to be where he is, because he wasn't sure he'd be fishing at all today.

He learned from BASS this morning that he'd been reported for a rules violation. Immediately, thoughts of a DQ entered his mind, but the final decision from BASS was a $500 penalty, and he was given the green light to fish.

He said the violation involved a cell phone.

"On the first day of the tournament, I had a battery going down, and my wife was here with me, and our 4-month-old child and 3-year-old child," he said. "We'd planned on them getting to the weigh-in at 3:30 or 4:00 – the heat's not good for the baby. I called her to ask her to come early, and get me a battery on the way.

"I didn't think it was a violation of a rule. Word got out about what I'd done, and it was one of those gray-line areas."

Bill Smith, Jr. is just happy to be fishing – rather than a DQ, he received a $500 fine from BASS this morning for a rules violation.

BASS Rule 3.i states: "During the official competition days of the tournament, a competitor may not use a CB radio, a VHF marine-band radio, a cellular phone, or any other type of communication device for the purpose of locating or catching fish. Competitors are permitted to transmit by radio or telephone only in the event of an emergency. If so equipped, competitors may listen to the marine-band weather information."

He said BASS determined his violation – a cell-phone call during competition – didn't result in a competitive advantage, hence no DQ and just the fine.

"I appreciate BASS doing that, instead of knocking me out of the tournament," he said. "But if I had to do it over again, I would. I knew I was going to be coming in an hour early, and I wanted to make sure they saw me weigh in. The baby doesn't like the heat. I just didn't know I was supposed to call one of the (tournament officials) before I made the phone call."

About today, he said his fish "changed up a little this morning" and that was one factor in his light 6-10 limit. He eventually changed to a finesse presentation, but he thinks the switch came an hour too late.

About whether he thinks he can win, he said: "Yeah. I know there's a 20-pound sack waiting in the area I'm fishing if everything clicks. I know there's a front moving south, and I hope that shakes things up a bit tomorrow. The spot I've got – as long as I've got wind, they'll bite all day."

5th: Hallman Seeks Big Bite

Hallman, a 2nd-year pro, made the second Top 12 cut of his career today. His best spot's in the same general area that Matsubu and Aaron Martens are fishing, but he feels there are good fish left. And he's got two other spots to fall back on.

About his 5th-place position, he said: "I feel pretty good. I had a really good shot a big, big bag the past 2 days, but didn't capitalize. And I had a co-angler who had an 8-pounder 2 days ago, and my co caught a 6-pounder today.

"If I could get those fish in my bag, instead of their bag, that would go a long way here."

The co-anglers are done fishing, so he's flying solo tomorrow.

"I'm fortunate to be where I'm at," he added. "This thing is all about getting the big bite. I haven't had it yet. But I don't feel like I've left anything out there at all. I've done the best I can do. I can still win. I need a 20-pound bag, and it's definitely out there."

Notable

> Day 3 stats - 50 anglers, 27 limits, 11 fours, 6 threes, 6 twos, no zeroes.

> Scroggins on his drop from 3rd to 10th: "The wheels fell off. I ran out of everything I had. They're not going to bite tomorrow, and I'll have to go fish new water. I hit everything in that lake I know of today."

> Swindle weighed a 13-06 limit today. He finished 13th, missed the cut by 10 ounces, and noted: "I was hoping they weighed a little more than that. I left an area a little early – I ran my cranking battery down on the livewell. I figured I'd better leave to be safe. The risk of losing what I had was a lot greater (if) I stayed."

> Ponds on his drop from 5th to 16th: "I said I was going to go for the big fish, and I did do that. I could have caught a limit early this morning, but I chose not to. And I did miss a fish of about 7 pounds – it was all my fault. I had the chance, and that's all you can ask for."

> VanDam, who finished 19th and 2nd in the AOY race, said: "I fished hard and did the best I could. It's been a fun year, and a great race. Skeet's pretty stout. One thing I've always tried to do is be real gracious when I win, and when I lose. This has been a tough event for all of us. It's been a stressful week. I'm glad this season's over, and now I'm going to do a little deer hunting."
