After yesterday's weather and "integrity of competition" cancellation, the Erie/Niagara Elite Series field today experienced some of the best that Lake Erie's eastern basin has to offer. A total of 15 bags topped the 20-pound mark, and a ton more came in a hair shy. That's smallmouths, remember.

There was a little juggling in the leaderboard, but today's standings are largely the reflection of a strong opening day. Everybody's catching them, so it's difficult to make up ground, and in the wake of the day-2 cancellation, eight of the day-1 Top 12 survived to fish tomorrow.

Edwin Evers, who began the day in 6th, moved up five spots with a 21-00 sack and now leads. His 10-fish, 41-13 total puts him just ounces ahead of 2nd.

Kevin Wirth's now the 2nd-place man. He caught 20-10 today and moved up from 5th.

Day-1 leader Paul Hirosky's 19-14 today forced him back two spots to 3rd.

John Murray, who began the day tied for 11th, stuck 21-05 today and moved up to 4th.

Greg Hackney slipped one spot to 5th, where he's in a tie with Jami Fralick. This is Fralick's first cut of the year – he missed it by ounces at Guntersville – and the second of his tour career. He caught 21-13 today and moved up from 22nd.

The Top 12 fish tomorrow, and best 3-day total wins the shortened competition. Here's a look at the Top 12, with total weight followed by distance from leader in red.

1. Edwin Evers: 41-13
1. Kevin Wirth: 41-10 (0-03)
3. Paul Hirosky: 41-09 (0-04)
4. John Murray: 40-13 (1-00)
5. Jami Fralick: 40-00 (1-13)
5. Greg Hackney: 40-00 (1-13)
7. Aaron Martens: 39-08 (2-05)
8. Rick Morris: 39-07 (2-06)
9. Kota Kiriyama: 39-04 (2-09)
10. Boyd Duckett: 39-00 ()
11. Elton Luce, Jr: 38-14 (2-15)
12. Terry Butcher: 38-04 (3-09)

Eric Nethery caught the day's biggest bag (22-06), but several pros commented they had a chance for 25 pounds, but jumped it off. A cold front moved through yesterday, which could be one reason for so many lost fish today. Post-front smallmouths tend to nip more than bite, and are notorious hook-throwers.

But tomorrow will be "front day plus 2," when the big brown fish tend to become more aggressive, which puts a 25-pound sack definitely on the table.

Evers and Kevin Wirth (right), converse at the holding tanks – they were the first two to weigh in today.

About 3 1/2 pounds separates 12th from 1st, so if Butcher (in 12th) nails 25 pounds tomorrow, he could likely win. And anyone in the Top 12 who sticks 22-plus could do it. It's that tight – especially among the Top 4, where just 1 pound is the difference.

New faces in the Top 12 in addition to Fralick include: Rick Morris (14th to 5th), Boyd Duckett (19th to 10th), and Terry Butcher (21st to 12th).

They replaced Matt Reed (2nd to 18th), Kevin Langill (3rd to 37th), Peter Thliveros (10th to 28th), and Dave Wolak (11th to 21st).

You have to work all the way down to 64th to find the first angler who didn't catch a limit both days, and it took a 32-04, 2-day total to make a check.

There doesn't seem to be an advantage to fishing near or far. Hiroksy's fishing close, and the rest of the Top 12 is about split between fishing near and far.

The two factors that'll determine the outcome tomorrow are weather – specifically the wind – and execution. It doesn't take long to catch 20 pounds, but culling up to 23 or 24 could likely take all day. So the race to 20 is the first step.

Winds are expected to be light tomorrow – about 9 mph out of the north-northeast. That's the same general wind direction as today, except a little more easterly.

It's absolutely too close to even begin to call out a prediction.

Evers Happy

It was easy to tell Evers was pumped – he had trouble focusing on interviews, and seemed to be thinking through every possible permutation for tomorrow.

This is his third Top 12 of the season, but it's the first time he's been the leader going into the final day.

"I'm real happy about today," he said. "It took me most of the day to get that weight (21-00), then I pulled up a few hours early and tried to save some (fish). It's a phenomenal fishery."

He thinks there's plenty of 5-poudners left on his area, but the key, he noted, was fishing slow.

"I've been trying to slow down, and you have to fish really slow. Having my Lowrance electronics really helps. I fished 2 hours today without ever looking at shore. I feel like the electronics are an extension of my body. I can see the fish. I can see the baits. I'm lost without them."

2nd: Wirth 'Elated'

Wirth was one of the first boats out today, and came in early – he caught a 5-03 at 2:10, which culled out a 3 1/2-pounder, and wanted to make sure it stayed alive. Still, he had one dead-fish penalty yesterday, and one today, which has been common with the deep-caught smallmouths.

His 20-10 today was only 6 ounces less than his 21-00 yesterday. In fact, his and Evers' weights look nearly identical – both caught a 21-00 bag, but Evers' other weighed 3 ounces better than Wirth's.

About his day today, and his position, Wirth said: "I'm elated, especially after my practice when my biggest was a 3 1/2.

"But I'm having to work hard – moving and rotating through my spots."

About his rotation, he noted that his fish are on "particular places" on deep structure, and that he has to "let the areas rest before he returns" to them.

Wirth's season, overall, has yet to gain critical mass. He's finished outside the Top 50 three times, is 26th in the points, and is ranked 39th in the BassFan World Rankings presented by Tru-Tungsten. This is his first Top 12 of the season – discounting his 6th-place finish at the 2007 Bassmaster Classic.

He said the key here has been somewhat mental. "The more years you put in, even when you're not catching them, you have some plan for the day and you keep a positive attitude. You just need to keep your head up, and give the fish an opportunity to help you."

> Like on day 1, he caught all his smallmouths today on Berkley Gulp!.

Will the real Paul Hirosky please stand up? (Hint: His brother Bob's to the right.)

3rd: Hirosky Hopeful

Hirosky began the day with a 5-ounce lead, and ended it with a 4-ounce deficit. So in all, his position's about the same.

"To me, it's like being tied," he said. "I said when I was leading that it was a five-way tie, and the only difference now is one goby a smallmouth spit out on the way up.

"It's a 1-day tournament now, and whoever brings in the biggest bag wins."

He added that he's "pumped" about tomorrow, especially because he has strong water he hasn't even fished yet. And he definitely gets the "local nod" in the Top 12. He lives in Pennsylvania, fishes Erie regularly, and won an Erie Bassmaster Open out of Sandusky 2 years ago.

About tomorrow, and the expected light winds, he said: "I'd rather the wind not blow – I'd rather fish vertical. There's not a lot of fish on my spots, and they're in very specific locations, so if the wind blows, I might not be able to catch them."

His bag today included two 5s, two 4s, and a 3-pounder. He twice lost the opportunity to cull out that 3-pounder. Also notable is that he's accumulated 2 1/2 pounds of dead-fish penalties in 2 days, and that he had some equipment problems today.

When he dropped his trolling motor this morning, he sheared three bolts on the mount. He took the time to fix them, then "30 seconds later" his trolling-motor cable broke. He came to shore to replace it. "I think it's just the end result of the day-1 weather," he noted.

He's never won a tour-level event, and this is his second tour-level Top 12. About what a win would mean for him right now, he said: "To me, it would be about getting the confidence that I can win at this level, and it would help tremendously with the financial burden. And it would be great for my sponsor Channellock. It's been a rough year for me, and it would be great exposure for them."

4th: Murray's 'Best' Ever

Murray, who weighed 21-05, was all smiles today.

"It was great," he said. "I was culling 4-pounders at 9:00, and this is by far the biggest stringer of smallmouths I've ever caught."

BassFan
Photo: BassFan

John Murray was culling 4-pounders by 9:00.

He's running about 10 miles to his spots where he has a few half-mile stretches dotted with isolated rockpiles. He caught a few dragging in the wind, but his best deal has been the dropshot, which he was able to work today.

He added that it's tough to stay on his waypoints – he drifts off, gets turned around and has to work to get back on top. But when he does, he's over brown gold.

On his odds of winning, he said: "They're just outside. My partner caught 5-pounders today, so I'm over the right fish. But I'll go have fun tomorrow and just enjoy the day."

5th: Hackney's Practice Set Tone

Hackney knew he was on something when he caught a 5-pound smallie on his first drop of practice. He spent the rest of practice refining that one deal and weighed 21-02 then 18-14.

He trails Evers by 1-13.

"I feel pretty good about my position," he said. "I caught a lot of fish today off my places, and both my partners caught heavy 19s. So I feel pretty good."

He added that he's fishing "reasonably" close, mainly because he'd never been here before, and didn't want to take a chance on a long run.

About the Buffalo-area fishery, he said: "It's the best smallmouth fishery I've ever been to. I've been to some good smallmouth lakes, but this place is a whole 'nother level."

About whether he thinks he can win, he said: "I've got as good a chance as anybody. The thing about it is, if I time everything right, I can catch five 5s. Yesterday I caught three 5s.

"Again, it's the most awesome smallmouth deal I've ever been around. It's such a great resource. It'd be a shame if anything happened to it."

5th: Fralick Needs 22

South Dakota pro Fralick moved up a big 17 spots today. Like Hirsoky, he also has an Erie résumé – he finished 2nd at the Bassmaster Northern Tour out of Sandusky last year.

"I'm thrilled," he said. "You need to make at least one Top 12 a year. I had the opportunity at Guntersville, and was 10 ounces short."

With his Sandusky experience, he knew preparation would be key, so he paid extra attention to his equipment to ensure it was all reinforced and ready to rock and roll in the waves. So far, it's all survived.

"The fishing's pretty easy," he added. "I'm not going that far – maybe 10 to 15 miles – and I'm fishing three reefs. The fish are on the same spots every day. Even with a wind change, they're in the same location on the reefs."

About how tomorrow might play out, he noted: "Whoever catches over 22 pounds I think will win. You'll need 22-plus to win. My co-angler caught that out of the back of the boat today.

"There's no pressure for me tomorrow," he added. "I know I need a good day to win, but as long as the wind is under 15 mph, I won't have a problem fishing."

Notable

> Day 3 stats – 108 anglers, 98 limits, 3 fours, 4 threes, 1 two, 1 one, 1 zero.

> Aaron Martens, in 7th, was one of a few anglers who said he could have weighed 25 pounds today if he'd landed all his fish. "I'm disappointed, but the bite changed a lot."

> Skeet Reese finished 13th, first out of the cut, and will retain his lead in the BASS Angler of the Year race. Kevin VanDam, who's currently 2nd in the race, finished 16th.

> Mike Iaconelli finished 51st and first out of the money. He caught 18-13 today, but couldn't overcome his 13-04 day 1.
