Alton Jones, a resident of Waco, Texas, lives just 2 hours from Lake Conroe. Surprisingly, he's making his initial visit to the venue this week for the Toyota Texas Bass Classic.
"It seems to be okay, although I'm sure there are better times of year to fish it," he said. "It's not too hard to get a keeper bite and I've caught several quality fish in the 5-pound range."
He said the Alabama Rig, which was so prevalent at last week's Guntersville FLW Tour Open, likely won't be nearly as big a factor at Conroe.
"It's not really that kind of lake. The water's a lot darker and it doesn't have the numbers of fish like Guntersville does."
