Big Bite Lookback – West Point

Pat Golden was the 13th-place finisher at the West Point Bassmaster Elite Series in Georgia – one position outside the cut for the final day. He attributes his failure to qualify for Sunday to a single cast on day 3 that was poorly executed.

"It was late in the day and I knew where a really good (fish) was, so I went in there and set up and just made a bad cast," he said. "A big one came out, but it wasn't too excited about chasing something that far out of the cover."

The fish was on a piece of isolated wood on a flat, and he'd seen it earlier in the tournament when he pulled a 5-pounder from there. He estimated this one at about the same size.

He said his buzzbait entered the water about 2 feet to the right of where it needed to be.

"I didn't set up my boat right is what happened – I just got a little bit lazy. As soon as I made the cast I knew it was bad, but it was too late to do anything about it. Both me and my marshal saw that fish come out of there.

"I sat there for about 20 minutes and pitched around and around, and then I left and came back about 30 minutes later, but she was gone."
