'Little Alton' triumphs

Alton Jones Jr., who spent many years traveling the top pro circuits with his father, logged his most significant angling achievement to date last weekend when the Baylor University freshman teamed with David Ridley to win a Bass Champs event at Lake Amistad. The victory was worth $20,000 to the duo, along with a $5,000 bonus from Skeeter.

"As his dad and his fishing buddy, I'm really proud of him," said Alton Sr., the 2008 Bassmaster Classic champion. "He's had a pretty unusual look at this sport, having traveled to every tournament I was in from when he was a little kid until he graduated from high school (last spring). Until B.A.S.S. quit allowing you to have (a non-competitor) practice with you, he was out there every day, and he's got the fish-finding exercise down pretty good."

"Little Alton," as he was known on the tours, and Ridley weighed a 32.47-pound sack to win the event by more than 2 1/2 pounds. It included a 10.67-pounder that Ridley caught and a 9-pound-class fish caught by Jones. They reported that most of their fish bit XCalibur crankbaits.
