The Bassmaster Elite Series had all year long to prepare for this week's Arkansas River event out of Muskogee, Okla. But all the preparation turned out to be useless: Due to flooding, the event was moved 18 miles north to Ft. Gibson Lake.
The field was given a single short practice day to prepare.
It took 15 1/2 pounds a day to make the cut. Edwin Evers averaged 13 pounds across days 1 and 2, then whacked almost 19 pounds on day 3. It wasn't enough, though, and he finished 13th – first out of the cut by a little more than a pound.
When asked to look back to see if there was anything he should have done differently to make the cut, he said: "I would have fished shallow. I thought at first that the tournament would be won offshore. I fished deep in practice and didn't catch them very good, and never could get a limit really secured out there the first 2 days. I went real shallow (on day 3) and caught a limit in the first 10 minutes. Then I was able to go looking and exploring the rest of the day."
