Hite on Detroit

Today's main news story examines how points position will influence strategy at the upcoming Detroit River FLW Tour. Here's a little more on that from Arizona pro Brett Hite, who took a year off from tour fishing, switched from Triton to Ranger, and returned to fish the FLW Tour. He's currently 30th in the FLW Tour points, which means he's pretty much a lock for the Forrest Wood Cup. He did the math himself, and feels a simple limit a day will put him in the Cup.

"The weather's the biggest thing here," he said. "The wind's not supposed to be too bad for the tournament, so for me, I'm just going to go where I can catch the best quality fish. I'm going to fish my strength, which is deep structure, and try to find those spots not everybody else fishes." He's got two drift socks ready, and he spent all day yesterday preparing his boat for rough conditions.

About his opportunity to make the Cup, which would be his first championship since the Bassmaster Classic in 2004, he noted: "It would be pretty cool – especially to have the chance to fish for a million dollars. I went there last year, as a spectator, and I think it would be a pretty good accomplishment, my first year on the Tour."

He added that he's having a lot of fun on the fishery. "These smallmouths pull so hard, it's unbelievable. And you make one cast, you catch a 6-pound walleye. The next cast, you hook a 5-pound sheephead. The next cast after that, you catch a 4-pound smallmouth. It's just full of fish."
