Vida's vibe not great

Michigan's Kevin Vida has won two Strens and two BFLs on the Detroit River, but he's not wildly enthusiastic about his chances of adding an FLW Tour triumph to that list next week.

If there was an abundance of smallmouth in the river, then it would be a different story. But the pickings there are slim right now, and that will force him to head offshore in either Lake Erie or Lake St. Clair.

"I don't anticipate much of a river bite," he said after a 2-day excursion to the venue last week. "There aren't enough smallies in there for it to be playable.

"I have enough experience (on the lakes), but I'd just prefer not to have to go out there and get my brains beat in by the waves the whole time."

His most recent win at the Detroit was the 2005 Midwestern Stren, when he caught three straight bags in the 18s after opening with 16-04.
