Co-angler who died was ex-NFL player

MLF revealed today that the co-angler who died Thursday after falling from a non-running boat at the Sam Rayburn Toyota Series event in Texas was 77-year-old Pete Spencer Lammons of Houston.

Lammons was an experienced co-angler – the tournament was his 57th with the organization. His best finish was a 3rd-place showing in a BFL at Rayburn in 2019.

He was also a former NFL player – a tight end for the New York Jets from 1966-72. His tenure with the team included the Jets' upset victory over the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III in 1969. He was selected to the Pro Bowl following the 1967 campaign and finished his career with 185 receptions for 2,364 yards and 14 touchdowns.

He played collegiately at the University of Texas, helping the Longhorns to a win over top-ranked Alabama in the 1965 Orange Bowl.

He was fishing near the San Augustine Park area on Rayburn when he fell overboard just after 10 a.m. Thursday. Attempts to rescue him by his boater were unsuccessful and his body was later located and recovered by San Augustine County game wardens via the use of side-scan sonar. An autopsy has been ordered.
