Fish and wildlife officials in Virginia have become concerned about the proliferation of Alabama bass in some of the state's popular largemouth and smallmouth fisheries. The smaller species will outcompete largemouth for resources when occupying the same habitat and can interbreed with both smallmouth and spotted bass.
