BPT: Variable minimums, early finals berths

The Bass Pro Tour will implement a variable minimum weight system for its 2020 events and will award automatic berths in the Championship Round to the two anglers who tally the heaviest combined weight in their two Qualifying Rounds, according to a story posted today on the MLF website.

"Qualifying Rounds" is the new name for the segments previously termed the Shotgun and Elimination rounds, the story noted.

The minimum weight for the season's first event at Lake Eufaula will be 2 pounds. That number could be higher at renowned big-fish venues such as Florida's Kissimmee Chain, the Raleigh-area lakes in North Carolina and the St. Lawrence River in New York.

The premise behind the early Championship Round berths is to discourage anglers who rack up big weights in their opening rounds from laying off fish in the second round, which was a frequent occurrence in 2019.
