Day 1 at Open cancelled; event cut to 2 days

The first day of the Harris Chain Bassmaster Eastern Open was cancelled Thursday due to inclement weather.

The event will be shortened to a two-day tournament with the full field of 224 boats competing Friday and Saturday, according to an update posted on Bassmaster.com Thursday morning.

A band of severe weather moved across central Florida early Thursday, prompting severe thunderstorm and tornado warnings to be issued. Tournament officials said delaying the start of the tournament a few hours would've presented other challenges.

“Even with a delay until 10 a.m., when the front passes, it would cause a longer delay in attempting to launch 224 boats,” said senior tournament manager Chris Bowes. “That also would limit the fishing day and make it even shorter.”
