Typically, a crankbait is designed to float when idle and dive when retrieved.
The crankbait that KC Choosakul and Steven Jacobs hurled Sunday at Table Rock Lake wasn't your typical diving plug and the bass inhabiting the sprawling reservoir in the Ozark Mountains ate it up.
Choosakul and Jacobs, both from North Carolina, used a liquid-filled Core Strike S.O.B. crankbait to catch 15-07 to top the field of 210 teams at the Toyota Trucks Bonus Bucks Owners tournament and claim the $5,000 first-place prize.
The S.O.B. crankbaits – S.O.B. is short for Stands On Bottom – were first introduced at the 2014 ICAST show and feature a fall rate of 1 1/2 to 2 feet per second depending on water temperature and line size. The baits are manufactured in Mississippi and are designed to maintain constant bottom contact, and help prevent the treble hooks from snagging.
Choosakul and Jacobs caught most of their fish in 16 feet of water along a creek channel, and used 15-pound fluorocarbon line.
Brett and Beau Govreau, both of Missouri, finished 2nd with 13-07, fishing a wobble-head jig trimmed with a Strike King Menace grub.
The top 30 teams claimed paychecks of at least $150 and each team took home a weigh-in bag stuffed with products from Carhartt, Toyota and even custom-made lures by pro angler Terry Scroggins.
