The Wal-Mart Open (Beaver FLW) begins next week, and one angler who's been consistent there is Texan Chris McCall. His last three Beaver finishes were 22nd, 35th and 18th. "This will be my fourth trip there," he said. "I'd been in the Top 10 two of those times after the first day, then blown it every time."
This year could be different though. Yes, he's had a rough-and-tumble start to the year with a 139th at Okeechobee, 176th at Wheeler and 39th at Pickwick, but he'll arrive at Beaver with a different attitude. He won the recent Rayburn Central Stren, which was the first significant win of his career.
"I definitely feel different," he said. "My confidence is very good. I started off the year really slow, but my good friend Clark Wendlandt has been hammering me to get my attitude right. It's started to fall into place and I feel really good."
His win at Rayburn, coupled with his 11th at the Amistad Central Stren, puts him atop the Central Stren points. "I'm pretty excited about that," he said. "The next one's on Texoma, which is actually where I grew up fishing."
