Creek Chub to get historic marker

Creek Chub to get historic marker

A historic marker will be placed in Garrett, Ind., on Aug. 12 to celebrate the founding of the Creek Chub Bait Company, according to a report in today's edition of The Fishing Wire.

A ceremony will be held at the site where the Creek Chub factory once stood. The company, now owned by Pradco, celebrated its 100th anniversary last year. Todd Fiandt, mayor of Garrett, along with Casey Pfeiffer from the Indiana State Historic Bureau and author Dr. Harold Smith will speaking during the ceremony.

In addition, fishing tackle appraisers will be on hand so visitors are encouraged to bring old fishing tackle to discover what treasures they may own. Smith will also be signing his new book The Field Guide to Creek Chub Lures and Collectibles, one of six books on Creek Chubs that Smith has authored.

Creek Chub Bait Company was founded in 1916 by Henry Dills, an employee of the B&O Railroad. The original lures were hand designed and built one at a time. Dills tested his creations first in his family bathtub, then while bass fishing on nearby Lake Indian.
