Bobby Garland: 1938–2006

Maybe you know the name Bobby Garland. Maybe you don't. But if you look in your tacklebox right now, it's virtually guaranteed his revolutionary invention is in there. Garland, who created the tubebait, passed away Tues., Feb. 21 in Mountain Home, Ark. after a lengthy illness.

He introduced his original tube, called the Gitzit, in the early 1980s. It eventually became one of the most dominant baits of the past decade. Known as the "father of tubebaits," he owned and operated several bait companies, the most recent of which was Bobby Garland Custom Baits.

He's survived by five daughters and one brother (Gary, of Canyon Plastics).

> The funeral home where services were held maintains an online guestbook, which viewers can sign. To visit the guestbook, click here.

> BassFan will publish a detailed history of Garland's Gitzit in the near future.
