Meyer catches potential spotted bass record

FLW Tour pro Cody Meyer caught a potential world-record spotted bass Friday from Bullards Bar Reservoir in California. The fish weighed 10.80 pounds on a certified scale.

“JR Wright and I had caught three really big spots that day (6.66, 8.35 and 7.74 pounds). Then I marked one single big fish on my electronics. It was suspended about 20 feet down over 100 feet of water. I cast my (Strike King) Ocho to it, let it sink, and then my line jumped.

“It was immediately obvious that it was another big one, but it wasn’t until I saw her that I actually realized how big she was."

The Ocho was the 5-inch model in the KVD magic color rigged on a size 1 Owner Mosquito Hook. Meyer was using a Daiwa spinning combo spooled with 15-pound Seaguar Smackdown braided line with a 6-pound Seaguar Tatsu leader.

“That setup is my go-to when fishing for those big spots," Meyer said.

The California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife officially recorded the weight and details of Meyer's catch onsite. Once all the appropriate paperwork is filed, the department will determine whether the fish will unseat the current record of 10.48, which was caught in 2014.
